Mini-jack is for when a dvi-hdmi cable is used (i go dvi from my LG5100 stb to the hdmi on the hitachi) allows audio from the hitachi's speakers and then just pass an optical audio cable to the surround receiver...hdmi-hdmi delivers digital audio on both though (like my dvd player)

Gamblor, thank you for your reply.

Has anyone tried using the RGB port on the back of the 8800 ? I've plugged my laptop in and the quality looks really bad. What is the ideal resolution I should run?

I dropped i down to 1024x768 and it looked OK.

Mate you should try VGA cable and crank it to 1280 x 1024

recently bought this panel from JB...and took over a month before they delivered it...they blame hitachi for not having stock. Anyway finally got it along with tv unit and LG STB (LST-5100P). Having problems with the HDMI

when i connect the STB to the panel via DVI-HDMI, the panel says "no sync signal"....thats worrying...does anyone know whats the problem?? or even better how can i fix it?? THX

Check the connections to make sure they're in tight and sorry to state the obvious but make sure you have the right HDMI input selected (there are 2).

cheers,

John

Mine only says "no sync signal" when the LG STB is turned off...check the output signal you have selected for the STB as well...i have the same set up and works fine with DVI/HDMI cable + mini jack for sound through tv...

good luck

My 8800 died today. My wife came home to watch some TV and there was just lines and static across the whole screen. All input channels were the same (HDMI, Component and S-Video). JB sent a Tech over and they are going to replace my panel with a new one..

I am amazed that a Hitachi Panel gave up so soon.. Dissapointed indeed.

Lets hope the new one lasts for more than 4 weeks.

WoW what a bummer .. I havn't had a single problem with mine yet .... touch wood

Even the so called problem with the pulsing blacks isn't noticible, since I turned Black enhancement off.

Mind you I just watch the content not the panel and couldn't be happier.

cheers

Couple of questions re setup.

1. If I connect my XBOX 360 to Component, My foxtel Digital to Component and say if i buy a HD box to HDMI ( i assume these would be the ideal connections) am I correct in saying the tv wont output the sound to my amp via the sound output jacks because they only support composite to relay the sound thru? If this is the case it seems quiet silly.

2. Has anyone actually anchored there base with the wood screws to there entertainment unit as recommended in the manual or does this only apply to earthquake prone Japan?

Thanks guys!

Bugger!! Thanks for the info - You know, I did "read" that section but the brain filtered out "composite" and only saw "AV1-AV5" and as I was connected to AV1 (via component) I thought it was ok  It does seem like a limitation to me - I can connect directly to the amp but it's not an A/V receiver and doesn't have a lot of inputs, so connecting other devices to the TV might be an issue...

Thanks again,

John

I rang Hitachi about this "feature" as it sure seemed like a limitation to me. They suggested I just get two RCA Y adaptors from DSE and then split the STB Audio output, one to the AV1 input and one to the AMP input - works perfectly

so is it safe to assume, one could genereally own a Hitachi-8800 for around the 3500 mark? I have seen people getting quoted for phenomenal prices, even as low as 3100-3200 plus ext warranty. is it possible to get those prices through JB?

i really havent starts to haggle yet but those prices are a good indication of how much retail stores really get them for

Not sure on JB I bought mine from Bing Lee $3200 on credit card. I also bought a $500 digital camera at the same time not sure how much that helped.

Good luck!

Welcome aboard Club Hitachi. I've been stoked with its performance to date with high def content and I'm sure you'll find the 360 a perfect match for the 8800. Enjoy!

Im really happy I ended up with the hitachi over the panasonic 500a or the new sharp aquos......the picture quality is outstanding on 1080i, and playing the new Morrowind with surround sound and the lights out is a thing of beuty....anyone considering the hitachi dont hesitate.......buy this unit without hesitation!!

Does anyone have any quality settings they'ed like to share for use with the 360? Just wondering if I could get it any better! Also what what your advice be for just playing the 360 on it straight away?what settings would you do to prevent burn in?

Haven't bought my plasma yet, choice between Hitachi 8800 and Panasonic HiRes. I know Panasonic have a new model out within the next two months, has anyone heard if Hitachi will upgrade the 8800 in the near future or do they have any new Plasma models in the pipeline ?

Has anyone wall mounted this, and could maybe suggest a secure brand that can be locked down.

I am in the process of replacing my stolen Pana 500A which was fixed to the wall using Vogel's EFW2001.

Not suggesting that Vogel's is a bad brand, but the thieves had little trouble ripping the plasma off the wall last Tuesday.

Will place order for the 8800 once insurance has been sorted out.

Anyone planning on importing a HD-DVD player to pair with this monitor? It will be interesting to see how much of 'HD's goodness' it is capable of rendering. I'm pretty sure that it drops 56 lines when provided with a 1080 signal, so it resolves most of the vertical resolution. What I'm more curious about is the impact of scaling 1920 pixels to 1024 in the horizontal resolution (that's almost halving the resolution).

Will HD-DVD look *markedly* better than an upconverted SD-DVD on this particular set? (Obviously on a 1920x1080 set the answer is obvious, but it's a bit murkier here).

Unfortunately FTA HD is pretty shocking so that's not really a good indication of the sets true quality.

FWIW I'm a happy owner of this set already, but am just wondering if the benefits of HD will be apparent on it.
