DavoNogo
Meh.. not High Definition... Good thing Fifth Element will be on afterwards to help my HD fix btw, the show was designed for HD from day one, so Ten have no excuse... I can't remember whether Nine did HD or not though... LBM
Where did you hear it wasn't HD? I assumed that since all episodes on Nine were that Ten would do the same. They have been good with other shows such as JAKE 2.0, etc. I think they will (hopefully) and that it just isn't listed yet.

The Master
Bringing back an old thread with good news - The idiots at Nine have finally lost the show and it is now on starting......on channel Ten for a "movie length episode" on the 27th November Great news that a decent station has finally picked it up. I couldn't believe it when I saw the ad - I thought it was Charmed until I saw that it was in widescreen. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> If it doesn’t rate well then channel TEN will dump it like they have to many other show so don’t get too happy just yet

DavoNogo
Are they seriously starting exactly where Nine left off? Oh and thanks for the heads up on the HD thing.. it certainly changed my schedule around (was going to record Ten, but since it's in HD, I'll happily record SC10 instead - less artifacts and pixelation that way)

DavoNogo
Some comparisons.. First the hard one, SD vs. HD (it's only hard to do the actual comparison, but it's easy to see the difference) Files were saved using JPEG compression but with as little as possible compression applied (that keeps the filesize under 1 meg so that I can upload them on imageshack). Comments are below the screenshots. Fullsize image: HD - http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/9770/hd1vu.jpg SD - http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/7779/sd1rw.jpg Zoomed in: HD - http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/7018/hd3wn.png SD - http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/4031/sd6me.png Not exactly the big difference I'm used to, but nevertheless, it certainly does pay to have a HD display. Fullsize image: HD - http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/6541/hd6cm.jpg SD - http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/2607/sd1rp.jpg Zoomed in: HD - http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/7232/hd7bj.png SD - http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/3070/sd7wg.png This is where a HD display comes in handy... without HD, you wouldn't be able to make out the buttons or the zipper... Fullsize image: HD - http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/9172/hd8ik.jpg SD - http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/599/sd0mb.jpg Zoomed in: HD - http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/3142/hd1ds.png SD - http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/8117/sd7kt.png Maybe not the best example, because I used Weave deinterlacing for both, but you can still see artifacts around her lips. Fullsize image: HD - http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/9878/hd5yt.jpg SD - http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/7311/sd8rz.jpg Zoomed in: HD - http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/1616/hd3vg.png SD - http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/3543/sd3av.png Pretty obvious, isn't it? Difference is amplified 3000% on a HD screen displaying HD compared to a SD screen display SD. There's just no competition. Now comes the fun part, SC10 vs. Ten. Ten - http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/4945/ten7xq.jpg SC10 - http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/7141/sc102yd.jpg Miniscule differences between the two. SC10 is ever so slightly blurrier than Ten, but also less grainy. So it's possible they're applying a soften filter or something. Ten - http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/5883/ten9iw.jpg SC10 - http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/1172/sc108fy.jpg Again, slightly blurry on the SC10 side. Kinda looks like it's been bobbed, but that would be silly. Ten - http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/5499/ten1lz.jpg SC10 - http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/4097/sc107md.jpg Once more, it's slightly blurry on SC10, especially noticeable around the forehead area. Ten - http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/8358/ten5oz.jpg SC10 - http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/6717/sc105ai.jpg You can clearly see they've switched sides. Now Ten appears to be blurrier than SC10. And with that SC10 also appears to show more grain. But that's expected due to the way it's filmed. If you look closely at the one of the people in the foreground, Ten loses detail on the person's jeans, whilst SC10 remains sharp, as per the following images: Ten - http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/6426/ten7wn.png SC10 - http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/5677/sc108tb.png You'll also notice the bike wheel has lost some detail on Ten, as well as the footpath on the left, the STOP sign in the background, and the other bystanders in the background. The person's hair in the foreground is also a big mess on Ten, whilst the detail was kept intact on SC10. And finally: Ten - http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/8701/ten1oo.jpg SC10 - http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/5745/sc104je.jpg I think it's clear which one the winner is... SC10's higher bitrate certainly gives it the edge
LBM
Did you notice how Ten gives it a progressive scan look to it - Nine was a mess compared when doing static shots (even at low motion) that never looked right even when deinterlaced. Good comparisons too, even with a LQ show such as Smallville, SC10 really shows the difference. Edit: I nearly forgot - NO WATERMARK! About time Ten got the rights to all the HD shows I say. anthonysimilion
Nine is still the leader in HD - more HD than anyone else, more DD5.1 and generally higher bitrates. These WB shows like Smallville and Gilmore Girls are very grainy, but HD still definitely has the edge and provides extra detail over SD, giving an overall sharper (but still grainy) image. DavoNogo
Edit: I nearly forgot - NO WATERMARK! About time Ten got the rights to all the HD shows I say. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Nine Perth don't have a watermark either, so it would've been the same for them... actually their Nine has better PQ than Ten, so it's a big downgrade for the Perth viewers. DavoNogo
I just noticed something.. SC10 are stat-muxing (using a variable bitrate). I guess that explains why the quality is so high on moving scenes, but slightly lower on static scenes.
freighttrain
i reckon they should just show smallville back to back to get viewers up to the new season.. could u imagine it 52 weeks a year wow.. esp checking chole and lana *drools*
LBM
Since we are around three years behind I can't see why they don't play it at 7:30pm each night - it would take them all of Summer to even catch up with the US and then they could do it weekly. LBM
HD Lite is a useless term these days - it is what we get and I have finally given up and realised that the network will not fix this problem. With that out of the way I find that HD is much more enjoyable.
