Dell 2405 FPW - 24'' Widescreen LCD comming soon

Recommended Posts

As someone who's wasted far too much time already following this deal, I don't intend to waste any more.

I just ordered one for $1331.10 through the forum, along with a couple of hundred others.

I take it aspect won't fix up a component in single to 16:9?

Because if you had 1920x1080 on the DVI, aspect setting would put letterboxes on it.

And 1920x1080 can be done on the DVI with reduced blanking.

It is a computer monitor, the aspect setting is there to tell the monitor to put letterboxes on a resolution to correct it's aspect ratio regardless of if it's 4:3, 16:9, 14:9 or whatever.

I know as I have a 20inch Dell monitor.

But it might be more tricky for the monitor to detect the resolution of the image from the component inputs.

alex if you go to the wirlpool forum where they they are setting up a bulk buy (in this thred) & then do a search for your monitor model no' you will find a link to a user guide on page 13  you will find a setting for  horizontal & vertical positioning for each of the inputs this may well help your croping problem

Firstly, those are only applicable to D-sub input.

Secondly, my phenomenon seems signal related rather than display - because when I do PinP or PsideP, I still see the cropping. It could be that my STB is cropping at output, or it could be that 2405FPW is cropping at input. The only way to know is to connect another YPrPb source and see.

I just ordered one for $1331.10 through the forum, along with a couple of hundred others.

Geez at that price I might order another one - but not before the two issues are resolved in my mind - (i) the aspect ratio for 576i/576p/1080i; and, (ii) cropping.

But it might be more tricky for the monitor to detect the resolution of the image from the component inputs.

Every HD and (scaling) SD consumer display can do it. It's a matter of timings and porches. The display cannot guess whether 576i is anamorphic or not, but that's a separate issue resolved manually.

$300 is nothing to sneeze at and it's great that people can organise themselves and that Dell will honour such discount, however, given the run-around that Dell Warranty Claims is giving me in trying to exchange the crooked monitor-stand, I'd hate if this group-buy affected someone's power to claim.

So aspect won't correct component to 16:9? Strange, I'm sure it would on the DVI though.

Alex I think that's were there are going to be big problems with this group buy, since the users aren't getting an invoice from dell but mrwolf's company, I think there will be issues with people and warranty claims, hence why I avoided the claims, having gone through lots of high tech gadgets screwing up I know the value of having a concrete warranty and mrwolf's deal doesn't really guarantee that.

hi Alex thanx for all the help you have given......now i just signed up with dell so In 2 or more weeks I'll have one...........we will keep in contact I hope.....The hd box in the living room does not change resolutions easily( older panasonic with dip swiches on the back meaning that the tv is always in 1080I so can't expand 4.3 programing it has a sub d but using component) I will buy a teac hd box ( 1080i etc on remote) for the living room...so pana will be used with the lcd.........I intend to run a s video cable from the living room to the bed room for dvd....I already have the audio in place....or save my money and buy another dvd ......saw one in a discount store a while ago for $90 it had sub d thanx again......any more info on croping... did you look at the position of the water marks.....read your sd box thread & I think I saw mention of your box with component

Max, congratulations. Hopefully with 1080i output from STB and 2405FPW's "1:1" Scaling option, you'll have no problems (as has been reported in US threads).

This monitor is state-of-the-art and makes all the current LCDs (and dare I say, Plasmas) look outdated (of course, size issue aside).

By the way, by chance, do you have your Avatar in 1920x1080i size? I'd like to use it as Zoom Player's background image.

Enjoy the 4 week wait!

As apposed to?

Even if there is a four week wait, there's nothing else comparable in that price range worth buying instead.

And so this thread is talking about nothing.....

http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=13626&st=0

Well it's not talking about a monitor capable of 1920x1200/1080 that's for sure. That's what I'd call "comparable".

"Avatar in 1920x1080i size" just editted this post a bit avitar naive.... now I had to google to find out what an avatar is exactlly I initially said( in photo shop there is an image size menu available in pixels that you can customise) .......silly answer so the" colourbars" picture(ntsc type) was found by googling for it cant remember where I got it from though but its out there some where........bought the dvd player ( D.sub progressive scan) component s- video composite $50 ( on special)...so I'm hoping that may help with croping if it becomes a issue...... + d sub allows the lcd to move the image......hoping that 60Hz is not going to cause a problem with the other inputs.......

Borrowed friend's Teac DVB800 HDTV STB to connect to 2405FPW through respective inputs... Here are the results:

The good news -

- 2405FPW didn't crop Teac's YPrPb - it looks like my crappy ITV-D500 is the cause of heads being chopped off!

- in 2405FPW's "1:1" aspect-ratio control, it correctly displayed black bands on top and bottom to create true 16:9 picture!

The bad news -

- 2405FPW couldn't sync to Teac's D-sub (RGBHV) - error was something like "Cannot display mode"

- 2405FPW couldn't sync to Teac's DVI - same error as above.

One caveat - I'm no expert on DVB800 - perhaps there are some specialised modes that alter output in a some ways to extend compatibility.

......... in fact if you look at the resolution table that is sort of expected.......how ever the dvi may work as there are 2 cable types..... saw info about it thru various threds on teac hd box but 60 hz v 50hz could also be an issue.........D-sub at hd res is the other issue I expect.........do you remember what res worked on the teac hd box (component) ie....1080i....720p.......576p......576i......seen info on overseas threds that 720p has worked on sub-d but could be 60hz (res in spec' on table).... good news any way

:P ...... thanx again Alex so we now know that s video & component works

The only way 2405FPW's "1:1" aspect-control works to cover the maximum part of 16:9 within the 16:10 screen is by STB outputing 1920x1080i picture. Anything lower would accordingly occupy less of the screen.

It's logical to conclude that DVI/D-Sub refresh-rate must be 60Hz for 2405FPW to be able to display it.

That is good news Alex as 1080i seems to be the resolution that the teac hd box was set on...........this is a computer monitor first but you have proven to all of us who will use this lcd for video displays its capabilities +( 1080i true display)...so you have made me very happy & I thank you for that......the wirlpool forum has ordered btw 200 to 300 of these I think...... so this type of thred will not die for a long time & there collective info will be very usefull but its you who has broken the ground in Aus' & the 50hz pal system........:P

Have you noticed on Whirlpool that all of those monitors (that hadn't been delivered yet) were recalled due to poor quality? This is across the board, not just group buy orders.

I had a bad feeling about the Whirlpool group buy - glad I didn't go ahead with it.

That's just a rumour.

Anyway, my 2001FP works fine with 50hz on DVI. Odd.

What a load of bull, i order mine about 2 days before that group buy deadline, and from my online status page, the unit is built and tests and on it way to australia with an expected delivery date of next tuesday, after easter monday. Which is inline with their 7-10 working day policy. MrWolf has been very quiet and to be honest i think people have been had and or there will a lot of problems with getting their units and warranty/returns. Glad i didn't go in it, not worth saving 200 bucks to have more worries and stress and possibly be stuck with a faulty unit i can't exchange or return due to the dodgey invoices he was sending out.

Also with the dvi, below 60hz is part of vesa standards, i'd say the issue is with the interlaced signal, it may only support progressive signals via dvi, anyway can you try 720p via dvi on the teac?
