So, there is no in-principle objection. Implementation, i.e. poor designs, are another matter. But that applies to everything, not just under-slung counterweights! After a complete ground up rebuild by SNA maestro @Shark, including an engineering masterpiece of a plinth with built-in isolation, my 401 is sounding better than I could have imagined. For now, Jelco 750 and Shelter 9000 in residence but a Reed 1X on its way. Many thanks to Mark for the amazing job he did restoring the 401. The linear tracking at the top means the needle tracks perfectly aligned with the groove as the record plays. I need to pull it down for a full service. Another import from Japan. The automatic arm movement has a flat plate underneath it with 3 cutouts in it which allows 3 small LED's to create a light path through them so the turntable knows what size record it's playing and when it's at the end to auto return. One of 3 LED's is dead and I cannot find a replacement anywhere (looked at mouser electronics etc etc). So it remains dead. I know that's the only problem as I swapped an LED from another player and it works perfectly with it. The client asked me to "make it a bit special" as he has some serious equipment with great resolution. The laminated hardwood body needed a lot of work and in hindsight I should have started from scratch. I have a love for Art Deco so you will see subtle art deco features over the Deck. The TriPlanar was damaged and required me to make new parts, refinish and rewire it. Arm Support is my design and I got it CNC'd locally and hand finished in my shop. Teres Platter was re-machined & rebuilt, it has a lot of parts not visible. Feet are custom billet Items I make, and these house Vibrapod inserts. Photos show my Koetsu Rose Sig. for testing. Drive ended up being the brilliant Teres Pseudo Direct Drive Unit I had purchased earlier for my own T/Table project but it was tailor made for this project so it was an obvious choice. TD19 Posted June 7, 2020 Share Posted June 7, 2020 After looking at the @shark Garrard 401 work of art I thought the non-silver inserts in the control knobs was an excellent idea. On several of the 401s that I have restored I have had the chassis powder coated a metallic charcoal (called Coal Dust), which I much prefer to the British Transport beige, and also repaint the 'GARRARD 401' area on the control panel with a made-up dark grey (Foundry Grey). So I painted a set of control knob inserts with the same Foundry Grey and, although I do like to keep things original, I rather like the result.
