We all have our “fun” carts. One we just drop in for a break from the big guns. This OM5 is the funster for my second TT. Usually a Garrott K3 does the digging for music but now and then drop in this free OM5 with a new stylus. For $90 new theses are a good fun listen.

One of my first  carts was an Ortofon OM 10 (on a Dual 505 turntable) back in the 80's.

Upgraded via stylus to OM 20 and 30 but still reckon the 10 was the value price point.

Bought my Rock mkII in 1986, still in use.

I purchased mine in '85 with the Excalibur and enjoyed the hell out of it. Sold it 5 years later for a Gyrodeck. I wish I still had both of them. Also, to this day, I miss my 1500 LP collection ( many of which were very rare and irreplaceable ) which were stolen and burned.

An update to my 1200GR/2M Black setup.

While I was getting excellent sound, on some records there was a curious groove noise that I wasn't getting with my 103R on the Technics

Then I noticed that brushing the Ortofon PNP headshell (some sort of plastic material) transferred very audible sound - again, not present when I tested with another headshell.

So I swapped the 2M black into a Jelco HS-25 and I'm getting much reduced groove noise/artefacts.

I think the 2M Black is an excellent cartridge, but can't really recommend the PNP version (wish I could because its super convenient with the Technics). I do notice Ortofon have a PNP II version - so maybe this has been improved.

Here's the 2M in the Jelco headshell - which also has a much nicer to use finger lift than the Ortofon HS:

You might care to experiment how your system sounds when you've removed your bolted-on fingerlift.  :)

I guarantee doing this will improve your sound - weird ... but true.

After all, shirley your arm has a lift/lower mechanism?

Andy

EDIT:  Of course, you will have to re-set VTF.

This is probably true.

When I had the SME-V I used it without the finger lift as it was supposed to sound better (I never compared). But I used the finger lift with both my subsequent Graham arms.

I got used to the convenience.

The Ortofon HS has just a vestigal lift that I found awkward (and it still had the issues above). The proper lift on the Jelco is a feature I like - and I'm willing to compromise a bit.

May I ask where you purchased the Technics 1200GR?

Well, there's a story to that.

Just days before Technics announced the sl1200GR would be officially available in Australia, I bought a 'grey' import for considerably more from Discrepancy Records. I was pretty pissed and was seeking to return it, but Paul at Discrepancy said he'd match the newly announced retail. He didn't have to do that, so props to him.

I imagine any technics dealer could get you one now - and maybe negotiate a discount.

I've got an original Garrott P77 bought from Brian & John Garrott in the early 80's.

Tossing up whether or not to get a Garrott P77i replacement stylus for it for $360. Have also heard that Jico do a SAS replacement that may be better(?).

Proud owner of a new Michell Gyro SE in black which arrived last week to replace my Rega RP8 which has gone to another lovely forum member.

I’ve been busily working on getting it all setup and ‘cable dressing’ :)
