No ! HD mode will display whatever the format of the source is.

You don't really want to stretch a 4:3 format to 16:9 .....

Niko- how did you get the set to do 4x3 with a computer plugged into the XGA port? My (non-A) 76cm Palsonic refuses to do anything but 16:9 when the XGA input is selected. It is a real pain, as I can't use it to show my family photos I took (unless I use photoshop to prestretch them vertically :-) )

Indulis

As a guess, you make the windows desktop 16:9 too, by making it, say, 1365x768 for e.g.

Sorry indulis I didn't mean that. I was thinking broadcasting...

Anyway still waiting to read any feedback about the (A) models.

I do too get that "wavy" thing somewhere in the middle of the screen, when the camera is panning, or letters side scrolling, but just a bit. I can leave with that.no problem. If we can get to this secret menu, in our models (?) maybe we can fix that. But first let's fix this @#@#% LINES at 1080/50Hz

Just a FYI, I rang Palsonic yesterday and they are really clueless.

I asked the lady whether I could see a new 'A' revision 76cm and she told me they were not available in stores yet. They'll only go on the market when they clear existing stocks of the older version. She could not/would not give me a timeframe estimate on that.

I then proceeded to ask her the difference between the two, and she tried to claim they're exactly the same, with only the external plastic casing looking different. So I pointed out that the manual for the A revision has 17 preset graphic modes vs 13 in the old one, among other differences, and she insisted that she'd been told they'r e both exactly the same. The call ended rather quickly after that....

Can anyone answer a question for me? I was reading through the 17 pages of this thread, and the general vibe I get is that the svideo/composite inputs look like utter trash?

I've got a Yamaha RXV-2400 receiver, which can upconvert(I think this is the term?) any composite or svideo inputs up to component video... would this then let me easily bypass the main deficiency of the Palsonic?

I primarily want to use this tv for dvds, and also for my 5 game consoles, all of which would be connected to my receiver using svideo, and run in 4:3 .. will they look okay and run well on the Palsonic?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Daywalker, are you even a Palsonic owner?

From reading prior posts, people said the composite/svideo inputs run through totally different circuitry than the dvd/hdtv inputs on this tv. I just want confirmation of this, and am wondering whether the upscaling/conversion feature of my receiver will let me bypass that deficiency.

If svideo is bad on the palsonic it will still be bad running through the reciever.

This doesn't make sense. I think the question was that if you use the Palsonics component connections will you avoid the Palsonics Svid and Composite issues.

I would say yes it does because the amp allows you to converge your equipment to one connection point and use the Palsonics component input - only issue here would be if the Palsonics component input has the same issues?

Hi barfman,

I am a soon to be Palsonic owner.

I have the service manual for this model and can confirm that the composite/svideo does run through a seperate circuit than the component.

Cheers

Thanks a tonne Philby, that's precisely what I wanted to know

I just came back from the Moore Park Supacenta a little while ago, I got my first glimpse of the Palsonic. It sure is nice... I'm definitely going to go for one now, but the only thing playing on my mind is whether I should wait for the updated "A" models or not? Apparently they won't be out till current stock dries up. What we really need is to start hearing comments from the guys who are buying the new 86cm A models as to whether they're any different/less quirky than the old non-A sets.

Philby out of interest, what price are you getting the 76cm for? Best I could manage was $1750 cash inclusive of delivery.

barfman,

I am going for the 86cm, and the best price in Adelaide so far is $2800 cash.

Sorry I can't give you a price on the 76cm, but imagine it would be dearer than an Eastern State quote that you can get for sure.

Good Luck.

Philby/Daywalker, have you guys tried Harvey Norman? I got my quote of $1750(after much tussling) cash price inslusive of delivery from them today. I then came home and rang about 4-5 other stores, everyone told me no way could they even match that price <click>

So HN's must be buying in bulk and getting some sort of sweet deal ....

RE THOSE HORIZONTAL ROLLING BARS

I sent a (fairly stroppy) email to Palsonic last week advsing them that after two visits by their techo probelm still exists and I want it resolved.

Received reply email from Nick advising they will arrange replacement TV!!!

Techo phoned Monday night to arrange visit on Thursday AM. Will bring another TV to compare with current TV (not necessarily replace). His view seems to be that if the bars are present on both sets then it's the STB and PS DVD that are the problem. He may be in for a bit a shock, because I definitley don't agree. The model is faulty.

I'll post again after their visit.

Apologies for delayed response. Nothing but PC dramas and sickness/injuries with kids for the last three weeks.

Anyway, Palsonic visited as promised (on Thursday 13 May 2004).

This is in fact their third visit. On the two previous visits (Bob) has suggested a number of potential causes and solutions, of course none of these pertain to the set itself. After the second visit Bob had suggested that he might try and arrange to bring out another TV and see if it too displayed the rolling bars.

This time, two of them called and brought another TV with them (same model). This appeared to be brand new and needed to be unpacked from the box. It was clear to me that they were prepared to exchange sets if this solved the problem.

Prior to this we (again) viewed the issue on my set and on this day the problem was quite evident. This time no solutions were suggested. They just set up the new TV and connected my STB (DGTEC 2000 via XGA) and had a look….at exactly the same problem on a different set.

They disconnected everything and set my original TV back up. Problem still exists.

Their view was that this demonstrates that the TV is not the problem. Fault must lie elsewhere in my setup.

The other guy (not Bob) mentioned that he had seen this issue when setting up a display of these TV’s at the casino. By simply disconnecting all the power chords and reconnecting differently they solved the problem (at the casino). I have the TV, antenna booster, VCR, Fox box, DGTEC and DVD plugged into a power board. This is connected to four way GPO on the wall. Also connected to the GPO are an amp and tape deck. I have tried connecting this in multiple ways and even used a different (four way) GPO. I’ve also tried this with just the antenna booster, DGTEC and TV. I’ve also tried turning off various other bits and pieces of electrical equipment…all to no avail. Tried a few different combinations while they were here…as per previous attempts no luck.

They suggested I persevere with this, even if it meant getting in an electrician to check the electrical wiring in the house.

They also suggested it might be reception (this has been done to death). Brand new antenna recently installed. Problem exists on all channels and DVD. It is clearly not the reception.

They then suggested I take my STB back where I purchased it and have the retailer (HN) set it up on a Palsonic TV in the store and see if problem exists. I haven’t yet tried this.

Bob then tried to tell me I am only person in the country with this problem. He went on about how CH9 use these sets blah blah blah. I let him know categorically that this was not the case and I am aware of a number of people with sets that exhibit this problem. Suggested he check the DBA forums.

He did acknowledge that the problem was either related to my set up or a design fault with the TV. Clearly he considers it to be the former.

They left it with me to try differing set ups and check the DGTEC on a retailers set.

My issue is that the rolling bars are evident on this set via the DGTEC and a PS DVD player. The rolling bars are not evident when I plug the DGTEC into a PC monitor. From the DGTEC the bars are evident via XGA or component connections.

To me this unequivocally demonstrates that the set has a design fault.

Next steps, find the time to visit HN with my STB and see if I can get it set up on a Palsonic TV. If the retailer experiences the same rpoblem this will no doubt provide some leverage. After that I guess it’s keep pursuing this further with (Nick at) Palsonic.

Of course, after typing this, I go and have a quick look at the TV…no rolling bars in either HDTV nor DVD mode…

Have you searched around the net for explanations on this? It can occur if the TV's refresh rate doesn't sync well with its source devices. I.e If this is the case then in essence you are correct, it's a TV design flaw that it won't sync properly.

Hi has anyone had any luck gertting into the service menu on the Palsonic 75WSHD

This earlier post is not working for me. I can't seem to enter a number higher than 239 let alone 951. When trying to enter any number 240 or higher the set just stays on the channel that is aready selected and no sign on a service menu.

<earlier post>

press the(-/--) button until you see THREE --- on the screen

the press (9) (5) (1) Slowly

PRESS the (RECALL) {below the (9)}

PRESS (0) (-/--)

PRESS (MENU) (up)

this should get you to the service menu

to get to the geometry and contrast menu

PRESS (TEXT?IMAGE) (MENU)

to get out of this repeat the steps.

but until you are back on the service menu

go to the shipment and press (RIGHT ARROW)

Well I finally got it sorted and funnily enough if the code and procedure in the above post work for the 86WSHD, it is different to the code and procedure that works for the 76WSHD model.

 Is the process above fro the 76 or 86cm set?? I'm still a little confused, I have a 76cm set. What should I be doing to get into the service menu for a 76cm set.

Thanks

:P

Not exactly a DVB-t query this - but seems the best place to ask! Our 76WSHD works very nicely with an HTPC using a visionplus card. I upgraded our Foxtel box to a digital one a few weeks ago though and have been trying subsequently to connect it using the RGB inputs on the telly. Have any of you guys successfully done this? I have a SCART to RGB convertor (a Dick Smith P6676) and have set the digital box to output to RGB. I get tantalising flashes of almost video followed by a blue screen. Interestingly - since I started fiddling with this the s-video input from the digital fox box has gone wonky - it displays only a weird black and white and red picture with s-video input. Have I broken something? Still works fine for composite video from the foxbox and VGA in for the HTPC...but who wants to be content with composite?
