Would any Members of this FORUM that has purchased one of these Wonderfull SONY's would care to share some of your picture settings,as at this stage I dont have any of the commercial setup discs :ie:( Video Essentials).Any advice would be most helpfull and appreciated.

Cheers.

Keith m.

to be honest it's a matter of taste and although I have the video essentials disc I like the Hi fine setting for most applications. I think it doesn't emphasize the antialiasing that can be apparent in dvds and pal broadcast. Also skin tones seem to be a lot less "fake tan" than other settings. The whites aren't full white but after a while you get used to this and the picture looks more analogue in my opinion. The setting I probably will never use is "dynamic". It just seems too digital for my liking.

Again though it's a matter of taste and after a while you should find a setting that you keep coming back

I have seen the new Sony HDTV at Sony central also and it was far from impressive! There was plenty of picture over-scan and the picture appearance was lacking. It looks blurry or pixilated. What annoys me is that they have set it up by using one of the cheap Sony amps which supposedly does higher bandwidth switching, between the HDSTB and progressive DVD player. Could it be that this amp is distorting the picture by adding noise?

If it wasn’t a higher bandwidth switching amp would a picture still be displayed but of less quality?

I have no idea why they would need to the amp, doesn't the new Sony have 2 hd inputs!

I saw it at Sony Central in Melbourne and I would have to agree that it hardly looked impressive.

However just get it home and it looks fantastic. I got Lilo and Stitch for the kids and it is just awesome the detail you can see from a pal dvd.

I would have loved to have seen this TV in all modes, that is, DVD, 576p, 576i and analogue. There is no way known a HN salesperson would do that for you!!

I'd love to hear from a KVHR owner on those lesser resolutions. Are they also good (relatively speaking)?

This set is by far the best picture you can get at the present time in my opinion. I have been looking at tv's for probably the past 5 years as I wanted to get a widescreen tv. Until this set came out I was not too impressed with anything I had seen, but I am very difficult to please. I work in television so I am constantly looking at stuff in minute detail.

However this set just blows everything away in my opinion.

DVD just looks awesome and at present I am only using a non progressive scan dvd through s-video. It's a Harmon Kardon DVD 1 which always had a great picture. I'd say the best material is animation as the detail you begin to see is just jaw dropping. Paper texture , subtle water colour gradations in Lilo and Stitch, bump map texture details in Monsters Inc. But live action too looks great if it's shot well and the transfer is good.

This set does show up bad transfers and if you have widescreen material that isn't anamorphic then the picture will be softer and not so tasty as you have to zoom the picture up to full screen.

I have been using 1080i most of the time but it really depends on the broadcast. For instance I am watching the Brownlows and I switched half way through to PAL and it looks a bit better than 1080i which seems to soften the picture slightly.

Obviously native 1080i will look great and whenever I have seen it, I get mesmerised by the picture. But both 576 progressive and Pal both look decent. Considering the predominant format is SD this is mostly what you will be watching and it looks terrific. It's really a matter of taste whether you prefer the sharper PAL or smother 576p. The only thing is with the HD signals is you can't add any of the DRC settings.

A word of warning however. Be prepared to see stuff you didn't expect. The picture is of such high quality that you start to see all the artefacts and poor compression in broadcast tv. Kath and Kim is a particularly bad offender in this regard when there is fast motion in the scene. Most shows exhibit these compression artefacts to a certain extent but some are worse than others. 10's footy coverage always seems to have very blocky compression artefacts.

I did also just try vhs through it for the first time tonight and wasn't too impressed. It shows up vhs for the crummy format it is. roll on cheaper dvd recorders

Hope this helps.

With all the TV,s I,ve owned here are my conclusions.

Honestly if you find a better picture on 1080i than the new Sony buy it!

The only one which comes close to it is the Rank Arena .

On 576P again its a clear winner and again a close second is the Rank Arena

On 576i It comes in 3rd. The Rank Arena was better with the old Sony coming in second

On FTA the new sony again comes in a clear winner with the Philips a close second and the older Sony comes in 3rd.

On Foxtel using Scart RGB The Rank Arena and the old Sony are CLEAR winners. The new Sony is quite bad here.(I,ve got a scart rgb converter to YpPbr for sale if any one wants one.)

These are all 86cm crt current models.

Angelo,

Maybe you & reggieboy should talk. He is looking for a SCART (RGB) to Component Converter for his Harmon Kardon DVD 1 to use with his new Sony KVHR36M31.

I did post some links to some converters in this thread for him as he asked about buying one in Oz. Didn't know you had one you wanted to sell.

The Aust Sony KVHR36M31 Model is rumoured to be based on the same chassis as the US KV34XBR910 Model. If that is infact correct, then these might be of some help to you KVHR36M31 owners who like to tweak:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread....46&pagenumber=3

and

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread....781#post1289781

The first thread includes a link to a zip file containing Calibration info. How much of it could apply to the KVHR36M31 I don't know. Worth a look!

Anyway I hope it helps you tweakers out there with the new unit.

Guys, any news on what is the best price so far for the new Sony? Went to HN in homebase today and although they did not have it in stock they offered to order it for me for $5300. Also the sales person told me not to go for it on some stupid reasoning as to HDTV is not worth it at this stage as there are not many programs etc.

Rex, where did your friend get it for $4899 including the Tosh STB?

Also guys any comments between this TV and the 1024x1024 Sony 42" Plasmas, especially if the price difference is around 1.5 - 2 k?

Hey everyone

Angelo and reggieboy, its great that you guys are happy with your sets. I love that feeling of having made a "really good purchase"

As such, im going down to DSE to beat those morons over the head in short order!! If it was running proper 1080i, then it should bypass the digital circutry, and i should be seeing the artefacts i was.

So...either they're using a friggin composite connection, not got it set to hd1 on the dgtec, or aren't using the hd in on the sony!!

fiskin morons.

but....what can you expect i suppose? its not a specialist store.

Can anyone recommend a specialist store in sydney running the new sony? i want to see this baby set up properly and see what everyones raving about!

I don't suppose anyone has had a chance to explore the memory stick thingy yet?

I use it a lot, well a lot for only having the tv about a week. It's cool and the picture quality is of course stunning. You can also see movies too. You can rotate pictures but you can't zoom into them which is something I have come to expect from digital cameras. The layout and design is a very understated grey . Menus are very easy to understand if a bit slow to react to the remote. My only gripe is the slow access times of the images, you get a black screen with the word access in yellow in the lower right corner in between each image.

It's not something I would really say was a clincher in getting the tv but it's fun and is a very simple way of looking at your images and deleting ones you don't want. A clincher would have been firewire, but hey that's just wishful thinking

That's exactly what I need. I have a Harmon Kardon DVD player that only put's out rgb. What type is it and how much are we talking?

P.S. I just saw CSI Miami tonight in glorious HD and it is just fantastic. If only all TV was this good.

Bottem line is if you're not impressed (even blown away) by the HD demo loop then the TV is not set up correctly...

The number of times I've seen people buy the TV that is playing Monsters Inc instead of a HD set because of the set up...I'm sure there are some stores that intentionally do this!

Anyways, can't wait to plonk down my Visa card after I've bargained Bali-style for my price!!!

so with all this talk of proper set-up, I think my KVHR is not set-up correctly...

can someone be kind enough to give a run down on what the ideal set-up would be, including cable types(links to brands/pics if possible) as I am getting confused with all this composite/component talk :P

What I really want to know is the connectiviy between dvd and display and STB and display...

Thanks in advance

Just got myself one of these new Sony KV-HR36M31. What can I say....It's fantastic!

Made an interesteing discovery that no one else has mentioned. Unless I missed something which is possible.

This unit has two Conponent inputs:

HD1 is a Interlaced/Progressive Component input with three RCA sockets.

HD2 is also a Interlaced/Progressive Component but.......It's also a RGBHV input. It has five RCA sockets. That is it can be used as either a Component input using three RCA sockets or a RGBHV using five RCA sockets. It might not be on a VGA (DB15 Socket) but it does the same thing. I'm very very surprised and impressed! Would have loved the DVI input as well. But I'm happy!

Take a look guys (KV-HR36M31 Owners). If the rest of you are in a shop having a look at this unit check the HD2 input.

So it you want to hookup your computer to this unit (or other RGBHV device) on limited resolution and refresh, all you need is a VGA to 5 BNC cable plus 5 BNC to RCA adapters and your in business. Haven't tried it yet but I'm as happy as anything.

Now just have buy either a Toshiba or Panasonic HD STB.

Anyway I'm off to have a play with my new Sony HDTV.

I'm not sure what price you saw but the cost i told was around the $4500 mark...

most larger chains can go below this as they also get a rebate after selling a number of tvs etc. not to mention their buying power...this is how they make their money if they sell you a product close to cost...

anywayz good luck with the haggling

you are gonna need it with some of the sales staff out there :P

Hi Mark

I did talk with Angelo but he wasn't too keen on the converter with the new Sony.

I can't seem to find where you posted those links for the converters. I have my eye on one from the UK anyway but it would be good to compare prices

Hi reggieboy,

So Angelo doesn't think his or any other SCART to component converter will work real well with your HK DVD Player & the Sony KV-HR36M31 HDTV. Is that correct?

As I said, for the price of those converters you could buy a new Sony DVPNS730 Progressive Scan DVD player for approx $285 (street price). See:

http://www.sony.com.au/product_detail_cont...rodCod=DVPNS730

Anyway here is the info on those converters again

Here is one SCART (RGB) to Component converter:

http://www.pcx.com.au/asp/CCA_RGBYUV_Home.asp

Another one available here in this PDF Catalogue:

http://www.wagner.net.au/Catalogue/20_12.pdf

I hope this helps.
