Digging Iron Maiden

Recommended Posts

G'day esteemed members of this great community!

I've never really listened to Iron Maiden before (other than the usual hits here and there on some hard rock radio way back in the '90s). I just downloaded "The Book of Souls", and I like it very much. I don't know if that's a good place to start, so perhaps some of you can recommend albums that I should definitively listen to? Not necessarily compilations, I'd rather listen to an album as a concept, if there's something like that.

Cheers,

Alberto

Start with "number of the beast" and work backwards from there

You don't like anything after # of the Beast?

@betocool   Number of the Beast is their classic album, you won't go wrong there.  Their sound has changed, as expected over such a long time, but it's one of the classic albums of all time.

I've listened to Number of the beast too much...

7th Son of the 7th Son really shows off Dickinson's vocals, and it has some of the best lyrics they've written.  It's a good one to listen all the way through too.  I'd also suggest Powerslave, Piece of Mind and Killers (with a different vocalist).  If you still like what you're hearing, then keep working through their catalogue!

I didn't quite say that. It's a good place to start as I reckon it's their best.

The next two best in my opinion, are the two that preceded it.

I didn't listen to anything for years after 7th Son but Book of Souls is an absolute cracker.

Hard to make specific recommendations with a band thats been around as long as they have but it seems you gravitate towards the more epic/progressive side of Maiden and having said how much you enjoyed the Book Of Souls for me personally id look no further than there previous release The Final Frontier as displays all the elements you require and IMO and is a hell of a ride finishing with with the killer Where The Wild Wind Blows (listen carefully to the lyrics on that and the twist at the end which still gives me chills)

I really like them all apart form a minor glitch in the early 90's with a replacement singer where as others tend to be divided in to Bruce's pre and post assignment with the band. speaking of which Brave New World is also considered a great comeback album.

Yeah I think you're right in that the OP obviously likes the modern Iron Maiden sound. The Book Of Souls is OK I'm my book (pardon the pun) but the previous Final Frontier and A Matter Of Life And Death albums are both considerably better IMO.

Exactly the same. My first thought if you want the epicness was Seventh Son. But there's no reason why you can't listen to all of them.

Early Maiden (first two albums) with Paul Di'anno singing before Bruce came along is a slightly different beast. A bit more of a punk bent to the sound IMO so may or may not be your cup of tea.

Thanks for the recommendations, that gives me an idea where to start. I'll have a listen at The Final Frontier next (when I have some time and peace) and then mix a bit with the older releases.

Cheers!

Book of Souls is a classic IMO.  I saw them live last year and the songs of Souls stood up very well to their other classics.

One album that I always seem to be drawn to is 'Iron Maiden' (their first album)!  There's something about great band's 'debut' albums that just seems to work!

Maybe it's the raw energy, and the 'not' over-produced sound that works? (Before they get discovered and 'commercialised')!

I listened to The Final Frontier the other night with the missus, we both enjoyed it a lot! I'll probably go about and get the records I like after having a go at them on Spotify.

It's the kind of music that I enjoy sitting down to and actually listening to it.

Yep. What Kaynin said. @betocool just start collecting mate, they all have their own flavour whilst still remaining distinctly Maiden, I love them all.

Buy them all, keep them, become familiar with them all, mine will be with me until the end, they continue to give me enjoyment like they just came out yesterday. If you can get to a live gig, do not pass it up.

What Dazza said, love em' old and new stuff. May not be the best records to show off your system but in terms of musical enjoyment there right up there with the best imo.

Oh yeah. most are horrifically produced. Music lover territory here, system lovers should keep looking.

Piece of mind is an absolutely epic album, one of my favourites whilst also being the worst produced album I own. They all sound best on the old vintage stuff, just awesome out in the shed system (Sansui etc) or the car, but quite nasty through the main system.

I listened to Last Frontier the other night and it's quite respectable, IMO, as is Powerslave.

I must disagree.  The Martin Birch era albums sound particularly sprightly.  After all he twiddled the knobs for Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Michael Schenker, Fleetwood Mac and others.
