'Clarity' on phono preamps.

Recommended Posts

G'day all, I was playing 'Beer Drinking Songs of Australia' by Slim Dusty and noticed something interesting.  Although that album mostly consists of 'story' songs as I listened I became aware of increased clarity of the words compared to usual and I wondered why.  I was using my DIY ESP P06 and perhaps its use of passive treble RIAA equalisation might have contributed to this.  I don't really know.

From the aspect of distortion anyway most well designed phono stages have vanishingly low levels of distortion thanks in part to feedback as part of the often used op amp design, however I do wonder what does contribute to 'clarity' in a phono preamp?  Regards, Felix.

Some people say that because you're amplifying such low level signals, an electrically quiet phono amp will mask less information, giving you more detail and clarity. I think I've read that is the same reason battery powered or at least excellent external power supplies have been more common for phono preamps.
Anyone else read that idea anywhere?

G'day mate, that is quite feasible as similar things apply in Amateur Radio regarding signal to noise ratio with radio receivers especially in terms of weak signal reception.  A noisy 'front end' and the weak signal is effectively lost!  Regards, Felix (vk4fuq).
