are these the best speakers ever made in australia?

I'm not sure about that. I think you should know how much of an unanswerable question that is.

I wouldn't dare question anyone's view on the best speaker ever made in Australia :-)

But I think the most significant could be argued sensibly!

Apparently there was an active version of the speakers using a Krell designed and built crossover. Anyone ever heard the active version?

The Sovereign,s might be "OLD" , BUT they are one of the best speakers i have ever heard.....it is a pleasure to own them. :)

After auditioning many New "high end" speakers, i think a lot is more about de core and aesthetics than the actual sound itself.

I recall hearing that PVaf used to work at Duntech, perhaps the vaf I93 is the spiritual successor to the Sovereigns.

I have heard the same thing and I also agree about the i93 speakers. I have only heard Duntech Marquis and Princess but Duntech seemed to have a "house sound " with each ascending model being an improvement/refinement and I think VAF do this also

One of the remarkable strengths of the Sovereigns is the deep. clean, accurate and effortless bass.  I can't see the Vaf's being remotely in the same universe as the Sovereigns.

In the early 90's, I lived with Duntech Crown Princes for about 12 months, having previously been extremely impressed by a mate's Sovereigns.  Unfortunately, in my room at the time and with ME 25/850, the Crown Princes didn't provide any semblance of the sound I remembered from the Sovereigns. :(

Of course, there could be a multitude of reasons for this and I may well have given up on the CP's prematurely.  Thanks to a kind offer from the last GTG, I have an opportunity to revisit the Crown Princes and I'm really looking forward to doing so.  It wouldn't surprise me at all to find that a room mismatch was the culprit and that the CP's are a worthy "little" brother to the mighty and magnificent Sovereigns.

I remember listening to both back in the day, at LWA.

I preferred the Sovereign but the sales guys told me that the CP produced a more consistently better sound in a typical living room.

Probably the most remarkable Sovereign setups I've ever seen was in a 25th floor apartment, in Kent St Sydney.

I lusted after these in the 90's. Never could afford the mansion to put them in. How much juice do you need to drive them?

All of it. I have a client with Sovereigns and an ME1400. They sound fabulous. When I recently serviced his ME1400, I loaned him an ME850. Even the ME850 struggled with the Sovereigns. They require a big, powerful, high current, VERY low output impedance amplifier to run properly. Valve amps need not apply. A big Krell, Gryphon, ME, or Levinson should do the trick.

Have to disagree.... i was running Krell KMA 160,s with the Sovereign,s ...  i prefer the Manley 250,s in all aspects...

The first high end system I heard was Soverigns with all top end Krell electronics at Len Wallis over 20 years ago and I rember being very impressed.went on to purchase krell CD player and smaller duntechs. Also saw magazine article on Bob Hawk at about the same time and in the articles photo in the back ground was the big Duntechs.

The cabinets are in fair condition for the age of the speaker (+20years old). The plinths, which are not shown in the pictures, do have some moisture damage but could be restored by someone with some time to their former glory.
      From Duntech's website:
"The Marquis has a time aligned, five driver arrangement. The bass and mid-range drivers have diecast magnesium chassis. The bass drivers use a vented magnet system and feature a special, coated, pulp paper cone.
The mid-range drivers are double magnet design and have rubber suspension for low resonance.
The double chamber tweeter is dome type, with a fabric diaphragm and ferrofluid for efficient cooling and damping.
The cabinet is designed to provide optimum rigidity and its size has been matched to the performance requirements of the drivers. All drivers have separate sealed enclosures.
Acoustic felt is matched to the requirements of the loudspeaker and tailored to the geometry of the enclosure.
The loudspeaker grill is covered with acoustically transparent cloth and the cabinet is hand finished in high quality wood veneers."

      Item: Duntech Barron Speakers
      Location: Melbourne / N.E. Victoria
Price: $1400 . ( Donation to SNA if these sell)
      Item Condition: Very Good
Reason for selling: Too many speakers!
Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, EFT
Extra Info: Purchased a few months ago for the Batmaqn . http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/topic/125485-fs-duntech-barons/?tab=comments#comment-1869039

I purchased these Barron's from the above SNA member (great chap) a couple of months ago to have a listen to the Duntech sound. I think that represent great value for $1400.

I really only grabbed these for a listen as they were not intended replace my main speakers and I seem to be struck down my the too many speaker diease! Every room I walk into has got more speakers in it. (I am sure I am not alone here )
I think these would need a reasonable amp to drive them properly.  I would be happy to drop these off in Melbourne tomorrow or next week in Melbourne or in Adelaide as I am planning on a visit. Off course you're welcome to pick them up from N.E. Victoria.

Please don't request the the grilles be removed as I don't know how the socks come off and the drivers are all in good condition.
