Our DIY Ultrasonic Record Cleaner

Recommended Posts

So finally got around to sending off the extra bottle of Triton to it's rightful owner yesterday(well the missus did) and Aussie Post charged $15.50 for postage. Anyway Jeanette was more than appreciative and reimbursed me straight away with a bit more than it cost so all is well again in the universe.

Thanks Matt!  I think that bottle is destined for my place in Camperdown, thanks for doing this.
Chris

No problem Chris. Could've just ad easily gone the other way and you would've got two. Good old Aussie Post. Jeanette couldn't believe the cost of postage but was more than happy to have it all sorted. Happy to help out a fellow vinyl spinner.

Chaps - thanks to all those patiently waiting for more of these kits, I am pleased to advise that all parts are ready for another batch.

(There was a hitch with the lasercut metalwork, which had to be returned for some addit work.)

My son has been away on work for 3wks but the driveshafts should be assembled this weekend & Paypal requests sent out.

PM me your postal addresses when you can.

Cheers, Owen

Has anyone had any luck ordering Triton X100 from Australian Resellers? There is a few based on a quick google search.

Also at present is the Triton X100 and distilled water still the recommended brew?

Chaps - this topic of water filtration seems detailed enough to deserve its own dedicated thread ;) , however a point about cleaning timing......

Note that, because the record is only partially immersed in the tank fluid at any given time, the total cleaning time for any point on the record surface is only a fraction of the total cleaning time period.  Inner grooves in particular, receive the shortest cleaning - by my calcs, only around 1/7th of the no. of mins/rev x the total mins cleaning time period.

eg. for a 2rpm motor & say a 15min tot. cleaning time, the inner grooves are immersed only for a total of around 1 minute!

The outer grooves are immersed for longer - for the same 2rpm mtr & 15 min cleaning, only for a total of less than 3 minutes.

Apologies if I'm stating the obvious, but a picture may help.....

Correction:

As @Citroen has pointed out, motor speed is unimportant.

Partial immersion of the record means that:

- Inner grooves are immersed only around 2mins of a 15min cycle.

- Outer grooves are immersed only around 5.5min of a 15min cycle.

Hence, I tend to clean for at least a 25min cycle now.

Fingers crossed my Triton X100 arrives before the weekend. I have received my kit and am just waiting for the fluid.

Can you put L'Art Du Son in the mix?

Oh good.

Not familiar with that fluid - but with US cleaning, the US 'cavitation' actions shifts the dirt, the detergent surfactant action (release of surface tension) assists this dirt removal. (And also drying.)  So I guess that any detergent or solvent action should help.  But high concentrations are probably not so essential.

I just remembered reading a post where you mentioned possibly adding an enzymatic cleaner. I believe L'art Du Son may fit the bill, it is generally used with Vacuum RCM's but was wondering if it would be of any benefit in US RCM

Ah yes, some U'Sonic cleaning enthusiasts add an enzymatic cleaner for those difficult to dislodge substances (proteins etc) - I haven't tried any.

So, nothing much different using a US cleaner - it's just ultrasonic action, which gets deeper into the grooves than brush cleaning (IME) & with a minimum of chemicals & if you are concerned, without use of solvents like alcohol, which some say tend to remove plasticisers from the vinyl.  Others (like L'Art Du Son) say that alcohol cleaning results in a unattractive tone.

I found these 2 products that might worth a try as they are reasonably  priced and available in Australia

Whiteley MedizymeLiquid Enzyme Cleaner 500ml $11.50,  MEDIZYME is a specialised enzymatic detergent solution that is capable of removing blood and other protein deposits.

Whiteley Sonidet Ultrasonic Detergent 5L $25.71, Sonidet is a highly active Neutral liquid detergent specifically designed for both machine and manual cleaning operations in the medical field. It is manufactured in a plant licensed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration. Sonidet is odourless, non-staining and is a safe detergent for the removal of hospital and surgical soils. Diluted solutions of Sonidet are colourless

I'm not a chemist but check the datasheets - fairly neutral pH, non-ionic - sounds good. (Sonidet).

Check for other additives - eg. Sodium Nitrite 'corrosion inhibitor'.

Also - the Sonidet can mix directly with water (they recommend 1:200/0.5%) which means that it is probably pre-diluted, not 100% concentrate detergent/surfactant. So maybe just consider the cost comparison against buying 100% concentrate of say Triton X100 or similar.
