I suppose it a generational thing, the music you listened to in your teens and twenties :thumb:

Hi All,

Keith Emerson with The Nice

Emerson.jpg.fdbdbaa9cda835474ef276d78b09a366.jpg

From: https://www.allmusic.com/album/keith-emerson-with-the-nice-mw0000650564

A double LP combining the contents of two separate LPs (Five Bridges, Elegy), is strange. "Five Bridges" was a suite mixing rock trio and orchestra, in the same form though more ambitious (and successful) than their earlier "Ars Longa Vita Brevis." But their record label, Immediate Records, went bankrupt in late 1969, and the trio was left without a recording contract and owed a lot of money. In the meantime, Keith Emerson had been making plans to leave the trio and form a new group that would, among other differences, be stronger in the vocal department, but until the spring of 1970 he was still playing with the Nice. Amidst this chaos, the group's manager, Tony Stratton-Smith, had kept possession of about three LPs' worth of unreleased tapes by the band, keeping them out of the hands of Immediate and away from that company's creditors (of which the group was one). After Emerson's departure, he released the first of the group's posthumous albums, Five Bridges, which had been recorded late in 1969 -- Emerson wasn't happy to see the not quite finished project (as far as he was concerned) out and there were lawsuits, but the album came out, on Mercury Records in America and on Stratton-Smith's own newly formed Charisma label in England, and it did well -- enough so that Stratton-Smith was back a few months later with Elegy, a collection of live performances from the Fillmore East augmented with some late studio tracks. Mercury later cashed in on Emerson, Lake & Palmer's sudden rise to superstardom by combining the two as the budget-priced double-LP Keith Emerson With the Nice, packaged rather misleadingly with a photo of Emerson on-stage from a performance with ELP.

I have that album

Think it was released by a manager or ex manager well after he left the Nice

Yes, the record company that recorded them went broke and the manager was able to keep the tapes, he held onto them and released them as a Double LP when Emerson, Lake and Palmer went big.

Cleaned a few records today, so most were from the vaults. Some recent Op shop purchases, along with some I have been meaning to clean for a while.

Toni Childs- Union. Great voice and clean late 80s sound.

D0333A04-F04B-40AF-A3DC-9F1B160972F1.jpeg
Oso Oso- Basking in the Glow. A great new album, when I was sick of being limited by what I had just cleaned.

505B8BF6-2E4F-4423-821F-7677B3C863DA.jpeg

Joni Mitchell- Court and Spark. A bit of a classic, with that production style that puts her just a bit too close to you.

7B155A87-8A5A-4E44-9542-272FC0A7F009.jpeg

Bowie- Ziggy Stardust. Just an Aussie issue, but sh*t it sounds good just cleaned. Such a great album- side two is just packed with even better songs than side one, which is already stellar.

8FD1D6C0-F90A-4FDF-9A6C-328F10A89853.jpeg

Bruce Hornsby- the way it is. Great piano based smooth rock.

When I first heard Toni Child's "Union" I was really struck by it's great quality (perhaps it was the African feel) but sadly I didn't find her following albums nearly as absorbing, although I tried. Understand that she has lived in Byron Bay since 2012 - anyone know if she still does live performances?

I'm certain that my issue with Joni's music is that my boss at work made fun of me because I "mondegreened" the lyrics to one of her best-known songs, aloud.

I blame ignorance and naivete... and the same on my part. Maybe my parents only had a poor quality AM radio when I was young. Yeah, that'll do it.

G'day JJ,

Is that one of the coloured LPs from the Gizz? Most of mine are psy-coloured.

Just spinning a sound comparison between my much played 1973 Vertigo swirl pressing (6366101) of 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' and the 2016 'remastered' (RR1 2695) Warner Bros. issue.

What a joke.  The Warner Bros sound is flat and lacking dynamics and punch.  The cover art is also filtered and flat.  Even with all it's crackles and pops my 46 year pressing destroys the remaster in every way.
