Just about the best band of the 1980's and came out of the sadness that was the end of Joy Division. Blue Monday is the biggest selling 12 inch single of all time and was only ever released as a single. Even the album Power, Corruption & Lies used to have stickers saying - Does NOT Include Blue Monday. Awesome song and awesome band Apparently the packaging on the first release of the 12" cost more to produce than the selling price so they made a loss... I obliviously went to the Hacienda during that time and had too much fun. Imagine that, a scouser drinking in Manchester and never feeling unwelcome.... Anthony Wilson was a very charismatic man who loved music. Martin Hannett a crazy recording genius then throw in New Order, The Happy mondays and a sprinkling of other bits'n'bobs.... Initial editions were released in March 1983 with die-cut cover and cut outs and a thick silver inner sleeve, designed by Peter Saville. Cover variations: Die-cut with cut-outs, die-cut without cut-outs, plain printed. Inner sleeve variations: Thick glossy silver, thin matte silver, thick glossy black or thin matte black. All bear the colour code, spelling "FAC 73 Blue Monday And The Beach New Order". There is a common misconception that Factory lost money on the release due to the design. The sleeve did cost so much that it actually denied Factory an extra profit of just under 1 UK Pence on each copy sold. Very interesting information I read on wiki that the band did not even proof read before going to print ? I just finished reading "Substance" by Peter Hook. Recommended for the fans of New Order or just interested in the whole Factory, Hacienda, Madchester scene. Classic sex drugs and rock n roll story with many twats (Hooky didn't suffer fools). Many lessons about how not to run a club, a record label and bad record deals. Drawing on elements of the final incarnation (to that point) of King Crimson and beyond, and then extrapolating the whole lot into the future. In the early eighties I used to make people listen to this album whilst at the same time telling them that it was the musical blueprint for the next ten years. Almost forty years later it remains a cutting edge, seat of your pants ride that never fails to reward the listener in new and unexpected ways.
