Leonard Cohen - Live in London, I listened to the first 5 songs digitally and it wasn’t quite right, switch to vinyl, what an amazing pressing.

I brought this as I liked the song "Sugar in my bowl" as it reminds me of Etta James (who I do love) and I was curious about Nina as Madonna referenced her in one of her Madame X videos (by playing one of her records) and Madonna likes to introduce her fans to "culture" - by referencing other artists from different realms (such as Frida Kahlo etc) and of course Madonna's new album is full of different instruments and styles and Batuka etc. So I got curious to see check out Nina Simone.

Watched the Nina Simone movie on Netflix and she was indeed a brave & brilliant woman - and a truly amazing pianist, so sad she was born in the time she was because her struggles were so great being so brilliant as a black woman & a concert pianist , where now she would have been truly celebrated from the start.

Picked up this recently from discrepancy records in Melbourne.

Big Hits (High tide and green grass)- The Rolling Stones

RSD reissue in translucent green

mono pressing.
I really think that a lot of early rock sounds better in mono. The rawness of the production is not improved in stereo, for the most part.

Mono morning continues, with a nice version of Elgar’s Enigma variations, conducted by Malcolm Sargent, from 1959. There is a little background noise, and it could benefit from a run through the ultrasonic cleaner, and I might have to give it a new sleeve!

If you can’t listen to Ray Charles in mono, than who can you listen to! Sounding super immediate, with a youthful sounding Ray Charles singing out from between the speakers. (Makes me want to put on a black suit and hat, a la Jake and Elwood Blues)

To close the mono morning, some Otis Redding. Such great songs and what a voice. Hard to believe he died in his mid twenties, though leaving such a trove of life affirming music.

Otis Redding- Otis Blue..

Just listen to Change Gonna Come.

This is from the mono box set, which I bought on sale from vinyl.com.au for $68. Not bad for seven records! I don’t think it is full audiophile AAA, but the records sound great.

I am spinning a first pressing album today

This is my favourite album from  this band, although other releases were technically more polished

The reason  I favour this album is its rawness and honesty

The listener must accept it warts and all to appreciate its uniqueness

Artist - Genesis

Title- Nursery Cryme

Album ID - UK first pressing - CAS 1052 - 1971

Not much singing in this one, my wife is not so keen but I don’t mind it on my system and I have just purchased another of his albums via SNA and waiting for its arrival:

Steve Reich, Drumming

Not to be confused with the Amazing Drumming Monkeys who got quite a run in our house when the kids were young and we saw them live
