Recommend me a turntable $500 -$1200

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm looking for a turntable (probably vintage) for between $500 and $1200, and would love to hear people's suggestions.....

I'm very fond of anything Micro Seiki, just love their build quality and style.

I also like some of the Luxman tables and I've heard Denon (i.e. DP59 or higher) are good too, but my knowledge and listening experiences don't go too far beyond these vintage Japanese style tables.

If anyone has a similar model tt for sale feel free to let me know

So I'm grappling with two options - buy a lower to mid-range Micro seiki (or similar), and upgrade the tonearm, or do I put my pennies towards a better table and worry about a tonearm further down the road.

I know much of this will come down to what is available at the time, but I'd really like to hear some recommended options from some of our TT enthusiasts!

Any help is appreciated,

Cheers,

G

just wondering if you have also considered what cartridges and phono preamp you will be using and if that is also included in your budget?

Hi okitoki, that price range is for the tt, but ideally if I could get away with the tt coming in at the lower end of that range, that would definitely be better for me.  I've quoted a relatively wide budget range because I am looking for something of considerable quality (2nd hand) but I'm not sure exactly where that price point is.

Hi grg_pasc, I agree with you, a well looked after micro in that price range would be money well spent IMO. Not so easy find a though. There was a micro MR611 on gumtree recently if your interested, but from memory perhaps a bit overpriced as the higher quality MR622 can be had for similar money.

My best advice is bide your time. I picked up a Fully functional Thorens TD 160 Last year for the princely sum of wait for it $10, yup you heard right. @ Garage sales you can get real lucky.

Flipped it on Gumtree for $350.

Unfortunately for some unfathomable reason prices on even low end tt decks have gone cuckoo for cacka. Makes the whole game a little less fun. Bide your time and you can still get lucky. Stick with known Brands like Rega, Lenco, Ariston, Linn, Thorens, Denon, Luxman, Yamaha Sony Technics & Micro Seiki who made TT's for many other's The best you could do @ your budget if time is not on your side is go for a complete package that includes TT tonearm & cartridge. You may find the Micro Seiki you seek in the classifieds right here. Aim for the upper price point of $1200 & you should do well with a complete package as the micro tonearms were pretty good. I assume you have a phono pre-amp separate or built into your amp. If not this will have to be factored into the $ outlay as well. Moving magnet will make up the majority of types you will get around the  bandwidth of your budget Google as much info as you can become a member of a net community like the vinyl engine or any other that are into Micro Seiki.

Cheers

Hi Audioboiss, thanks for your suggestion. I did send the seller of the MR611 a PM with an offer. Don't think he's too keen to post to Melbourne. Understandably though - seems to be in good nick for its age.

Hi Boris,

thanks for your opinion.  What a great buy with the Thorens!  If only I would be so lucky.  $1200 would be the most I would consider for a tt if something special came along. Id' be more willing to pay under $1000.  I don't have a Phono as of yet but but a seperate allowance has been made for that. I'm thinking upto $800 - might get me a half decent Graham Slee or similar. Will check out vinyl engine as per your suggestion.

Cheers!

George

Did you get this one? They only have white in stock at the moment. If the one above was available I would be impulse buying it now!

Hi all,

Back on track for this tt after a recent setback. Thanks for your suggestions.  I've read a bit into the Funk Firm Super Deck and seems tempting - not sure if feels right for me but still an option.

So originally I thought a Micro Seiki would be a good place to start as they seem to be very well respected. After further research Im even more confused as I have been looking at more modeern tables such as the Roksan, Clear Audio and VPI etc.

You could check out Hifido in Japan who specialise in refurbishing and selling vintage hifi. Add about $250 for turntable postage.

The pioneer PL50 looks nice. And they pack so well. You know it'll arrive in one piece. M

Challenge HIFI in South Australia have the RP3/Elys 2 combo for $999 brand new.  Pretty hard to top.  Alternatively a used P3 - 24 with TTPSU and a brand new exact is also around $1,000 - $1,200 if you can get the Exact on sale which it is currently on Aussie HIFIs site, with a used cart probably $800.  My vote goes to the latter as long as the cart is ok.  On a great used deal you could get an RP6 with an exact or similar for $1,200.

Hi guys thanks for all your suggestions.  I am now a happy owner of The Funk Firm Superdeck. Picked up the last one from Addicted to Audio with a Grado Sonata1 cart for around 2k. Also picked up the 5mm Acromat as per the manufacturers recommendation. Thanks all.

Hi Diynamic, I am quite happy with the outcome so far. Never heard a Rega, however it seems to be quieter in every way compared to the Micro Seiki MR622S I'm used to hearing. I have adjusted all setting a few times but not sure if the bias is set as it should be. I have my tracking at 1.5g measured with a digi scale. Any insight welcome.

Item: Marantz 6300 turntable, Genuine ATS0SLa Cartridge, Genuine 20SLA Shibata Stylus, Records and all accessories.
      Location: Melbourne
      Price: $950 firm
Item Condition: Everything working as it should. Some scratches & cracks on dust cover.
Reason for selling: I'm not playing records much as I'm mostly using Tidal/Spotify or FLAC files from hard disk drive as source. Thinking it will be good if I can sell this and spent the money on something else which will help me to refine my setup.
Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal(Covering fees or as a friend), COD Only
Extra Info: I spent a lot more money in getting this unit and collecting everything included in this sale.

      1. Marantz 6300 turntable.
      2. Genuine Audio Technica Limited edition ATS0SLa Cartridge ( This cartridge itself is worth $400 - $500 with genuine stylus).
      3. Genuine 20SLA Shibata Stylus.
      4. Exactly 50 records.
      5. Glass base ( On which the turntable is placed ).
      6. Platter weight.
      7. ZEROSTAT Gun
      8. Discwasher record cleaning fluid.
      9. MEMOREX record cleaning fluid.
      10. Discwasher record cleaning brush.

This is my second Marantz 6300 (European version with voltage selector) from my collection which is in all original condition. The cartridge and stylus included are in excellent condition as most of the time I used a different one (Do your research to see how much this limited edition cartridge with the genuine stylus is worth).  Listed this one sometime back but removed as my mind got changed. Prefer local pickup from Heidelberg Heights or buyer needs to make arrangements at own risk.

      Hi Guys,

Thought I'd share today's impulse buy with little to no research. As with my last topic post - I know very little about Turntables so I went with the 'Gut'. I recall fellow members talking about Micro Seiki in very high regard so that was my only reference to this purchase.

As per the pictures, included in the purchase:

      -Micro Seiki MA-505 Tone Arm.
      -Micro Seiki DDX-1000 Turntable 240V.
-Denon AU-340 "Audio Step Up" - Apparently used to improve the signal quality of an MC Cartridge ?
-Micro Seiki Head shell fitted with a
      -Denon DL-303 Cartridge

All seems to be working well, with all original manuals boxes etc..
Price agreed to was $650 the lot, Way more than I would ever dream to spend on a turntable - But If anything my thoughts were 'An investment to get my money back hopefully "Worst Case" scenario'.

Please let me know your thoughts regarding the Turntable / Tonearm / Cartridge / Purchase in general..

(Still yet to Google and research the gear myself)..

Sorry for the poor quality photos.

Once again Thanks in advance for any / all your help.

      Krash Dekki.
