How to move a tv in and out of position easily

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

After finishing a renovation on our house we were made an offer that caused us to pack up and move all over again. We are moving into another house at the end of Feb, and I will have some challenges in my room setup. Fortunately, I still get a dedicated listening room/study....

I will be in a long room, 7.5m x 3.4m x 2.8m, with double glass doors at either end. I will have the speakers up one end, 500mm from the side walls and 700mm from the front wall. My equipment rack will be on a side wall closer to the listening position, around 4m off the front wall. I don't watch tv all that much in this room, so don't want to have the tv permanently set up in front of the double doors. I do want to be able to move it into the centre position when necessary, and to be able to do it relatively easily and safely. The tv will be a flat screen 55'

Alternatively, I could look at some sort of flip down ceiling mounting, but I don't want to be craning up at the ceiling the whole time. It would need to extend down as well.

Does anyone have any clever ideas on what I could do?

Thanks in advance

there are articulated arms can buy, cheapies from selby

and I saw something more elaborate, motorised at tivoli, there is a larger screen one I saw them playing with,

personally id dump the tv... move it for some other use and pop in a drop down projector screen ... these can be as cheap or more expensive as want to be.

can be done pretty discretely.... ceiling mounted projector and a screen that disappears out of view at hit of a button....

have seen done well in apartments

Thanks fro the input Al. I had thought about a projector, but understood to get anything reasonable would cost a lot of money, and that in daylight it would struggle. I won't be able to black out the room. However, if I can do it for about the same price as a good 65" tv then it could be worth considering

you might be surprised !  we have 8 windows around our main room and large light filled staircase and open towards rear of room opening to kitchen dining and pulled it off. to start with I had a pretty affordable LCD projector and spent about the same on the screen all up about what would spend on a decent 65" TV now...much less than a 65" tv back then...

can watch cricket for instance with back opened up... and even with ambient light in the room. projectors perhaps not what people think of them as :)

the issue with the 65" tv will be stashing it away... most of the room styles like you have typically expect you are going to wall mount the tv on the side wall. which is probably not the way to go audio wise :)

Now you have got my attention Al - if you can watch cricket on it, I'm in!

Seriously though, if I could do a retractable screen and reasonable projector for under $4k I would look at it very closely. Second-hand to bring the price down is even better, most of my audio gear has either been second hand or demo. The tv idea was always a flawed option for me, but didn't think I had an alternative. Needs to work with ambient light, and will be showing FTA tv, Foxtel, Netflix and Blurays. Unlikely to ever worry too much about 4K and certainly not 3D

Can you make any suggestions on where I should look fro research etc? What do you think about the idea of sitting the projector on a coffee table when need, or am I better off ceiling mounting it?

Finally, it opens a whole new can of worms - how do you pick a reasonable ceiling retractable screen? Probably a 92" would be best based on a seating distance of around 3.5 to 4m. I assume that is a 16:9 ratio?

projector should be doable mark for the $2-$3k, 2nd hand can pick up some great bargains !  the 9000 series epson I owned was a very versatile unit and a 9200/8200 would be well under $2k second hand for a under 1000hour unit. $2k should also buy a jvc x35 and I wouldnt buy a unit older than this model and will be superb. the light outputs on both these units is quite superb even on low lamp setting. either would leave plenty for screen (~$1k, cable $50 and mount $200) which is all will need.

can see here (my old epson 9000w I had) with ambient light in the room a couple of table lamps behind the plane of the screen, screen still comes up like one big Plasma :D

the thing with projectors they actually do reasonable with ambient light as long as bang not directly onto the screen which will kill on screen contrast but probably still watchable !

not sure in nsw...

in QLD oztheatre is pretty helpful projector wise. though probably be some specialist stores in your area am sure could assist.

I personally wouldnt mount on a table as chance is will get knocked around and have to re align everytime want to use which will be a pain...  a ceiling mount projector is a pretty straight forward thing and any installer will be able to take care off. fit forget... can set up as I do which switch on the projector the screen automatically comes down... can work in seamlessly and integrated into smart/universal remotes as well if want.

PS benq projectors are also great value and some high output models have to be careful though that you are ok with the effects DLP projectors can cause which some people including me it seems are perceptible of.
