My Opinionated Proac D38 Review (long!)

Recommended Posts

Oppss ! I meant 703, sorry. Thanks John for your opinion. I'd like to buy a pair of speakers in the 703s price category (or less) and I still can't make up my mind on what to buy. I listen to a lot of jazz and classical music. I know this is a bit generic but I'd appreciate it if someone could give me a bit of advice.

Thanks

There is alot out there in that price range as Al mentioned.

Its a personal preferance and only you can realy make that descision.

Do you already have amps and cd players?

If so look at as many speakers in your price range as you can and audition them with your own cd's.

Then when you pick a few you realy like, ask the dealer if you can bring your amp and cd player in for another audition, this way you can hear what they perfrom like with your own equipment.

I don't listen to classical music, but do listen to jazz and i think it sound wonderfull on the 703's but i am biased, others do not like the sound of B&W

For $5100 you could have a set of Osborn Eclipse Reference. -> Click here

These are the speakers I am going to look at in 12 months time....

Worth a listen thats for sure.

[/b]

are you sure you're not getting a % of all sales made by Greg?

The PMC that Alebonau suggested is a very good speaker, but those were designed as monitors. A monitor has a very flat response, and is totally accurate. They were designed for recording engineers to evaluate the sound in the studio. However, when I listened to them, I found that the soundstage was too far forward. Excitement was also lacking. The overall sound was not to my taste. You might like them though.

The B&W 703 was also a very good speaker. It didn't have enough bass for my taste and it didn't image as well as its bigger brother which I listened to. Also, it's got that B&W house sound. Like I said in my review, it's very neutral with no obvious faults. But (like I said) the B&W sound does not excite me. It's a very competent speaker, something that will make you very happy if you like that kind of sound.

If you are a classical man, you should consider the ProAc Response 1SC. This is an updated design of the classic ProAc Response 1, a speaker I heard when I was in uni and formed a lasting impression since. Even though these things are tiny and unimpressive looking bookshelf speakers, the imaging and frequency response is incredible. I am sure that these things will actually image better than my speakers. As the size would suggest, they lack true bass extension. Instead, like most ProAcs, they rely on a slight bump in the midbass to give the impression of low bass. But this is done so naturally and so smoothly that you don't notice it until you see the frequency response curve. Put these speakers on a sturdy stand, and pair them with a pair of valve amps, and the combination would really something to envy. Here are a couple of reviews - Stereophile, and @udiophilia.

You would be more than welcome to have a listen to my system when I am next in town, perhaps next weekend. I'm a classical man too

The 703 doesn't have a bigger brother

in the 700 series there is

705 bookshelves

704 2.5 way, tweeter mid same as the 705 and single woofer

703 3 way, tweet, FST mid like the 800 series 2 x woofers

from the 703 you then need to move up to the 800 series

That's what I meant JohnA, sorry if I didn't make it clear.

[/b]

yep sorry mate, thought maybe you thought there was a bigger speaker to the 703 in the 700 series.

For me to step up to the 800 series it would have to be minimum 803D as the 804 didn't offer much over the 703 and for the price difference i couldn't justify the cost for very little return, and couldn't at the time afford to go to the 803D

But once you step up to the 803D or better still 802D its a whole diferent ball park but then me start talking $15 up to $35k

But as you mentioned some people just don't like B&W and this is why its best he go audition as much as he can.

I loved the PMC and there was a set of dynaudio bookshelves i listened to at CAV that i loved also and i dare say that the yn's exibited the ame charecteristics as the proac you mentioned.

When i first heard the 703's with arcam gear, i didn't like them at all and as going to walk away from B&W

What I liked most with the pmc and demoed most the models in the range, is their vocal quality and plus their bass response, with their transmission line design I really liked that too. They really do have a very natural sound to them I thought.

With the pmc which ones did you listen to amfibius, were they the new '+' model with the soft dome or the older metal dome. I actualyl prefered the older metal domes persoanlly with their added zing. the soft have tamed them a tad, though as you say probably now more accurate ?

*do people really think I get a cut?*

[/b]

no, its just that everytime someone asks about speakers, cd players, preamps or power amps, you always seem to be pointing them to Greg osborn.

Of course there is nothing wrong with any of his equipment, but i would be trying to give them many more options

Fair call. I guess I haven't heard a wide variety of equipment (GTGs are helping there) so I don't have a large array of equipment that I have heard that I can suggest. And the things I have listened to I instinctively form a ranking for, I guess I find it hard to recommend things that I didnt like as much. Wouldn't it be wrong of me to suggest listening to products that I havent heard? Honestly thought suggesting things that I have experience with would be the right thing to do. I get your point though, it would seem like im being repetitious.

Just thought that if everyone put forth an opinion based on experience in the thread then the person in question could collate those opinions and put together a mighty fine list.

See thats the problem Drizt, that things you may not like others may and the person looking at say speakers in a $5k budget may also like them, so no point dismissing it.

You will see people like Al and a few others will put forward heaps of products model numbers etc for someone to listen to.

Unfortunately we can't, or shouldn't tell people what to purchase because we like it, its up to the individual to make this choice.

Would you buy a piece of equipment solely on reviews you read?

Don't take this the wrong way mate, i am not having a go at you at all, just saying that we should just give people all their options and let them do the listening and running around.

Same as i will never reply to a what price can i get something for, if i can go out and bargain away i don't see why i should do the hard work, then pass this on to someone else who will most likely never come back on here.

I for one will not help lazy people.

Now a newbie who asks what speakers at this price point, no probs, i will name as many as i can, but if they come on and say i loved this speaker, whats the best price i can get it for....damn, go out and ask

No no I welcome your advice. You have done it in sensible and non-offensive way. Ill take it on board when making suggestions in future. I just was coming from a different frame of mind. I thought of it as suggest your favourite for the OP to collate his own list from all the responses. I can see what you are saying though.

I agree, with the best price threads. My only beef with those threads is that generally the people who ask those questions come here for one purpose and then leave.

I dont mind peopel being enthusiastic abotu somethign. but yeah good to make some other suggestions. Afterall not everyone will like somethign you do. Also nothign wrong with suggesting someone check out somethign even if you havent. Let them go find out for themselves. Never know they might find something really excelelnt that way.

What does get my goat though is when people slam or recommend somethign purely based on reviews, info on the net, specs and manufacturer info, yet had no experience with it, never ever seen it, let alone heard it or tried it. not good and very poor form I reckon. Not that I've seen you do that drizt. But you see peopel on forums who do.

Thanks for your invitation Amfibius. One day I'll make the trip to the coast and check what seems to be a pretty impressive setup (and I'm sure it sounds fabolous too !).

At the moment I have a Denon DCD425 as a source with B&W601 speakers.

The amplifier (an old Scott) just passed away :) , so I'm also shopping for a new one. I like the NADC352.

Anyway, as most of us I'd say, I will have to move gradually and buy the ampli first and find a good couple of speakers to match later. Thanks everybody for their suggestions: I like to hear passionate reviews, not just the average, bland, pseudo reviews of many magazines.

Possibly as the review is now 12 years old, and stereonet no doubt has seen a few changes and I think at least one server crash , it’s disappeared.

****,

how can they delete a review on timeless speakers like ProAc's?

Reg.
