Has anyone had experience with "Technical Workshops Pty Ltd" in South Yarra?

I am doing voltage conversion from 120 to 240v for my Bryston B60 amp and initial quote based on schematics was $169 (1 hour labor) before handing my unit in since the amp has dual primary windings on power transformer, so it can be converted to 240V.

After handing in my units and brief assessment, it is now 2 hours ($330) + parts  because the extra diode and capacitors are needed to be added such as 589,590,591 and C90, 91 and 92 etc to be compatible with 230v.

I contacted Bryston Canada and got below response.

++++QUOTE++++

The technician is likely referring to the schematic shown here:

http://www.bryston.com/PDF/Schematics/B60_SCHEMATICS.pdf

It shows a “230V ONLY” section containing the parts you mentioned below, but in almost all cases, these parts are installed on both 120V and 230V units.  If you B60 happens to be missing them, they do not need to be installed, but doing so can reduce mechanical noise from the transformers at the higher voltages.

Some additional parts that may also need to be changed, depending on the version of the unit, are some power resistors that drive the triac on the AC Inlet board.  R523 would be changed from 22 Ohm to 68 Ohm, while another resistor (not appearing on the schematic I’m referencing) would change from 10 Ohm to 22 Ohm.

+++UNQUOTE+++

I shared the response from Bryston with Technical Workshops P/L and they told me that the components in question are not installed on my unit.  Although it is indicated that they are not required, it would make the mod a bit easier by installing them.

I thought that adding less components make easier and take less time in normal case. Since I already handed my unit in so even if I cancel the job, I still have to pay 1 hour labour so I might have to proceed but just want to check if this is reasonable or they are ripping me off.  :(

If anyone look for repair shop, I highly NOT to recommend Technical Workshop in South Yarrra in Melbourne. It is just disaster and stuck with them for 3 weeks and was told that it will take another 2~3 weeks for doing simple voltage conversion... I wish I can cancel the job but they charge minimum hours no matter they do the job or not so might have to stick to them unless wasting a couple of hundred dollars as a minimum.  :emot-bang:

This is my first time handing my amp to repair shop and not a good experience at all. Hope others do not get same trouble as I do..

Sorry to hear your issue. I hope it gets resolved soon.

I would hope that this would stay a place to recommend where to go thread rather than a name and shame thread. Especially when the other parties can't share their side.

It's no good when it happens. Hopefully it's a mad Christmas rush slowing them down Spider. On the flip side it may come back sounding better than ever. :thumb:

Do you need an amp to borrow for Christmas @Spider27

B&W repair in ACT?

Although I've never used them I have heard that this guy is pretty good www.thefactoryaudio.com .

However, depending on the issue it may be easy to fix yourself.

Hopefully his amp will be back soon.

But as you suggest , nothing much happens over Chrissy.

They have probably gone on Chrissy break and will pick up working on it when they get back

Yes. they were gone on Chrissy break since 22nd Dec till 7th Jan.  It has been 45 days so far (4 weeks normal trading days and 2 weeks holiday between) and still waiting. Not sure how difficult voltage conversion is and how long it normally takes with other repairers or it is industry norm because this is first time dealing with professional repair shop but they are authorised technician of Bryston product for 20 years so must know what they are doing, I guess. I will continue patiently wait for them.

I wouldn't say it's overly long yet. I've had simple fixes take 6 weeks. Set expectations low, but be polite and ask for an eta

I need to get a pair of Beyer DT770 headphones looked at.  Only one channel is working.  I'm thinking of taking them to CVE in Coburg unless anybody here has another suggestion?  All input welcomed.

Cheers, Dave.

I have the exact same problem, poor connection one side, left I bet !

Just  having a quick flick through this thread and saw the mention of not receiving the parts back that had been replaced and the further mention that someones mechanic always put the replaced parts in a bag in the car.

I am all for this and it bugs the hell out of me after a lifetime of putting the 'dead' bits in a press seal bag on every job, that car mechanics never do.

"so you replaced the so and so for $542, can you show me what was wrong with it?"

"ah yeah nah its in the bin" is the usual response. Oh really that's very convenient....

He they probably did replace it but as a mechanically minded person I would be interested in seeing what was wrong with the old one. This happened this week BTW. Mazda 3 belt tensioner which did not get rid of the noise he was trying to fix......

Anyway at Audiofix you always get the old parts back and I have to say 90 odd % of folk just leave them lying on the counter but I continue to do it.

Also if you need a very fine tech on the Gold Coast check out Geoff at Resch Electronics, and yes we are mates..... from college circa 1982.......

Anyway now that I have reminded myself how old I am I'm off to cheer myself up with another cup of coffee prior to tackling the next piece of non working audio apparatus.

Regards, Andrew.

To underscore some previous posts, Chris Kim @ Kimil Electronics in Croydon Park, Sydney is first class.

I recently bought an Aragon 8008 BB power amp on EBay from America.   The listing said, 'powers up but has no sound'.

The unit arrived missing a number of casing screws   i.e. someone had made an 'attempt' at repair.

Chris did the voltage conversion, waved his magic wand over the amp, and suddenly it has sound!

Chris is honest, and charged me an extremely reasonable price for a fast repair turnaround.

Hi Guys,

Does anyone know of a reputable specialist to repair an old REL Sub - Strata II?

It has a buzz/hum - even when not connected to the amp.

I have tried different cables and even connected to a PS Audio P10 power supply - no change?

Thanks,

Malcolm
