Snakeoil operating system is a new software for your music server that allows ...even the computer/linux illiterate (like me)...to easily switch between different players and kernels to find the combo that best suits your system and your tastes.

What is a kernel?  Don't know, don't care? That is the point; with Snakeoil you don't need to understand linux, kernels etc. You simply use your browser to change settings that affect sound quality.

Does it sound great? Well yes, actually but that is the wrong question. Snakeoil is not just one system and it doesn't claim to be the best. It is all about letting you switch between different types of sound within moments and from the comfort of your listening position. You decide what is best for you.

This thread is explicitly for:

-People to share their experiences of which Snakeoil settings they like best

-People seeking help in getting started or using Snakeoil.

-Following Snakeoil updates

i.e. Snakeoil only.

To download or get help from the developer (Agent Kith) himself, visit http://www.snakeoil-os.net/

Please, please, if you want to talk about hardware, different software or your own computer genius, choose another thread. Consider the Snakeoil users that want a reference resource without pages of tangents to sift through.  Thank you.

so does that mean i can't install the latest one using a keyboard?

i have just learned that i can simply download firmware 0.1.2 and upload it to my Snakeoil machine and it will update the players and web pages to the latest version (no need to reinstall). The link to 0.1.2 is here.  i can upgrade the kernel when the keyboard issue has been sorted.

@@Gieseler Audio the other way of bypassing the keyboard issue is to install via a virtual machine like VNC.

i also hear that more features are planned for the next Snakeoil release - but mainly for new users who aren't familiar with linux - e.g. one click auto-setup wizard that will setup everything automatically (so people don't have to go through the website page by page)... And video tutorials....

sounds great(pun intended)

Hmmmmm ......... I think that one lazy b**tard with minimal Linux skills might just wait a bit before trying this ...................... :)

Don't wait mate, get in to it. And the support from Agent Kith is terrific.

Snakeoil is now update to 0.1.2a, resolving keyboard issue found on the earlier release 0.1.2.

Also tested to be compatible with Steve Job's keyboard and mouse.

Furthermore, Jriver has now been removed as per requested by Jriver camp.

Please visit the Snakeoil's pages for more infor...!

Has anyone here try it on a usb-3 flash-drive? I plan doing this to spare a SATA slot for the addition 2TB HDD/SSD.

if you have tried, keen to know if there is any compromise or sonicly worse off?

I've tried running Daphile from a USB 3 flash drive. I didn't think performance was as good as from internal SATA or CFast card. I should add that I was using affordable USB 3 drives which use slower memory modules than SSD.

any news?

About what?

If you mean about Snakeoil there have been several beta releases recently with considerable improvements in functionality. http://www.snakeoil-os.net/

Snakeoil can now be used to play Roon and HQ Player served from another PC/Mac. A big move forward.

...but only if you pay for it now...?

You don't have to pay for Snakeoil.  You can make a donation if you think it's worthy or don't donate anything; it's up to you.

There are also new kernels to try and the latest FW also provides new user controls from the web interface that allow you to easily try kernel tweaks like changing the clocksource or boot options (APIC, ACPI).

This is within FW 0.1.4 Pre-release. Agent Kith is waiting for more feedback before finalising the 0.1.4 iso. New users can still download the 0.1.3 iso and then use the upgrade feature to access 0.1.4 Pre-release.

Oh, and did I mention the sound quality has gotten even better  :thumb:

Ok, I'll take another look. I did download the new 'firmware' (dunno why he calls it that, seems to be web server scripts) the other night, but I had the (perhaps mistaken) impression that I had to pay to install it.

Checked it our again: the updates are only for those who have 'registered' (which means donated money, as far as I can tell).

from the FAQs

PS @@Ancientflatulence, what do you think of it?

Q: The Snakeoil tab doesn’t seem all that impressive, is that all this distro can offer compared to the other audiophile distros out there?
A: The ability to customise the firmware (either totally, or in parts) plus the ability to use different kernel gives you a massive advantage other distros can’t offer - a way to customise your snakeoil machine to suit your computer and your needs precisely. e.g. Upload a kernel that do exactly what you want, firmware that behaves the way you want it. The power of this feature will become more apparent in the future as I slowly add more kernels and firmwares in the Forums resources sections.

Q: How do I register and support the Snakeoil development?
A: Click the PayPal from the Register tab of your Snakeoil machine and send me a token sum. A registration code that enables additional snakeoil features will be sent to your paypal e-mail account.

Q: Must I donate to get an activation code?
A: You can always contact me to get one for free.

It sounds at least as good as Daphile which it replaced and I really do like it but I had a lot of trouble with the installation which Agent Kith worked tirelessly to sort out for me.

I have been using the Squeezelite player as it can be controlled by Orange Squeeze on my tablet.

I tried the MPD players and liked the sound but I could not get any of the android apps available to connect to the player. So I if I wanted to use MPD I would have to use the web interface controller which is not very user friendly.

My evaluation listening has been further disturbed by a dead KT150 valve which has necessitated a swap to my backup KT88s while I try to get Upscale audio to answer my emails and deign to sell me some new KT150s.

My only other reservation with Snakeoil is that I can see no way of adding albums to my library SSD by simply putting them on a USB stick, plugging it in and transferring them, which is my preferred method and can be done with Daphile.

Just use any PC or Mac on your network to access Snakeoil and drag and drop from your USB drive to SSD.

The Snakeoil server has OS on a cfast card and music on an SSD which is only connected to a wifi  router and controlled by Android tablet. If I want to drop an album into an artists folder, am I doing it in Linux or via the Snakeoil web control panel (the one with Home, Network, Music, etc ,etc tabs)???

Sorry for my ignorance, but what exactly is snakeoil ? Like I know what snakeoil is, but in context of this thread.

I read through hoping someone would ask the same question, but looks like I'll have to :)

Is it like jriver etc ? or something else ?

I use a Mac so I access Snakeoil through Finder. Open Finder, click on Network, click on Snakeoil. Your Snakeoil machine opens listing the various drives, folders and files. Open two Finder windows to make it easier to drag and drop from one drive (or folder) to another.

I'll show a screen shot of a Finder window but I am currently in the middle of installing the 64 Bit version of Snakeoil so Snakeoil is not shown in Finder ATM.

I've opened my Mac mini so you can see the various drives etc.

I am not good at PCs but I'm sure there is an equivalent in Windows.

My take on it is, it is a bare bones Linux operating system that is purely worked on to get the best Audio possible out of a Computer.

It is continually worked on and improved by Agent Kith.

You can install it onto a USB stick to try it out. It can also be installed onto a Hard drive.

Typically people install it to a SSD drive and put there music on it.

You then use another PC or tablet etc to run the control software on.  Like JRiver, and others.

@a.dent Thanks Andrew, looks like I have to figure how to get the PC internet/wifi router to talk to the Snakeoil router .......... its the way I have it set up, completely separate wifi systems, one with internet access the other without.

I prefer that the router and computer with Snakeoil are isolated from everything else if possible.

I wonder if there is an android file sharing app .................... ?????  .......... do it through the tablet .............. just to further complicate things ............... :) :)

To talk to the Snakeoil server, just get your computer to join the Snakeoil network. With my desktop, I just join the Snakeoil wifi network and access the server, transfer files etc.

The music server should appear under the networked connections, once opened, the music folder should be seen. Then it's a case of transferring files by copy and paste to to the destination directory

So you do have to pay for updates, it seems.

The latest version of Snakeoil is always free. Registration allows for mix and matching different firmwares, kernels and other parameters. The free version is the latest and fully tweaked for audio with settings that suit most people . The options available through registration are IMO, for those people ( geeks?) who like to fiddle with everything and explore what different parameters do to the sound. For hassle free fully optimised operating system, stick with the latest version available to everyone.

The PC has no wifi card and is hardwired to the Modem router.

I have a dlink modem router which provides the internet for the PC and an internet wifi network for the tablet and a smaller dlink router which accept an internet cat5 plug (but no input from the phone line) which if I run a long enough cable from the modem router will give internet access to the Snakeoil computer.

The android tablet shows the two wifi networks ............. is there a way to get pc router to connect to the Snakeoil router or should I plug the cable from the internet router direct into the Ethernet port on the Snakeoil server temporarily for the purpose of file transfer.

Or buy a wifi card for the PC.

Network stuff drives me up the wall ................ :)

I'm interested now that Snakeoil can run as a NAA for HQ Player / Roon. What formats are supported? Specifically, is DSD 512 supported? And are there instructions on how to install the NAA (as I don't see these on the web-site)?

      Item: Antipodes DX G2  Black
      Location: Sunshine Coast QLD
      Price: $4,400
      Item Condition: Excellent
Reason for selling: Not being used
Extra info: It has a 2TB SDD containing around 91Gig of flac files.  Has switchable power inputs (115V or 230V)
      A review: https://www.hifi-advice.com/blog/review/digital-reviews/network-player-reviews/antipodes-dx-music-server/

The only reason I'm listing this is I use a Bacch4Mac dsp and it only runs on Apple gear   https://www.theoretica.us/bacch4mac/ ......I eventually and reluctantly gave in.
If I wasn't addicted to BACCH  I would NOT be listing this server.  It cost me just over $9K,  It's  coming up to 3 y/o.  I want to buy some other hi fi gear and the DX is not being used.    It has all the features mentioned in the antipodes review above except it has only usb out.  Mark Jenkins decided (at the time) to provide only what he considered the best output.  (earlier versions had AES/coax etc.)
This is the best sounding server I have ever heard.  Mark Jenkins is the master at this stuff.   His approach to radically reducing electrical (and mechanical) noise without interfering with signal (achieved through not filtering) makes this one box server one of the best in the world.... and no spinning HDD's here, only separate SSD's.
This thing is so versatile yet so easy to use.  You don't need to be a level one computer programmer to use it.
It rips CD's in paranoid mode before storing to the drive. If you don't want to use it as a ROON Core you can playback using Squeezbox Server...controlled from your iphone (eg. Ipeng) or the app: "Orange Squeeze" for your Android device).  USB ports at the rear of the DX enable easily backup your valuable files to an external drive of at a click of a button (see the apps tab in the review above.)
Basically the DX is a fantastic sounding Server that's easy to use.  Its a fantastic way of keeping your CD's on file and transitioning to the world of streaming, where you can select any track at the touch of a button.
I have Roon for life and love it but I should mention that selecting and setting up free to air (global) digital radio stations is FAR easier on the DX (via squeezbox) than it is on Roon! You can also have both
No cat or dog hair, I'm not a smoker, was always used with power regulation (PS Audio P-10).
Feel free to pm (pers message) me if you want to ask specifics,  arrange a listen etc.

      Hey peeps,

The official sources don't mention one way or the other whether Burson Audio's Conductor V2+ supports Linux (I'm running Ubuntu) as a source on the USB interface.

Just wondering if anyone out there has these components in their setup and can chime in with any first hand experience.

      Thanks,

      DD04.
