  1. Item: Aurios Pro Max Isolation Cones Location: Perth Price: $ 960.00 Item Condition: Excellent Reason for selling: Getting out of Hifi Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: Aurios Pro Max isolation cones with stainless steel inserts for speaker spikes to fit nicely. These units perform wonderfully under any component or speaker. The 8 pieces here were under my Quad 2905. These are very hard to find as I believe the company is no longer in business. I purchased these new at over double the asking price. I can post anywhere in Australia and prefer to sell the lot in the one hit. Postage will be at cost and will provide a receipt for proof. Local pickup is ok as well and preferred, but will post. Thanks for looking. Pictures:
  2. I'm looking for ideas on effective methods to isolate transformers from the chassis of my DHT pre to lower vibration that affect these valves. Currently it has a total of 4 transformers/chokes that are bolted directly to the top chassis plate. To give you an idea of what I'm looking at the preamp has a square wooden skirt/frame that the aluminium top plate sits on top of. All parts are fixed to this top plate. The ideas could also be extended to further isolating the valve sockets which are currently decoupled with neoprene spacers. The valves are CX301A and are extremely sensitive to any vibration. Just clicking the stepped potentiometers causes feedback through the speakers. I'm not asking because there is a problem that needs fixing, more to improve things. Cheers!
  3. Hi all, I recently purchased a 100w tube amplifier (8*kt66 with a RRP of around 9k) and placed it on a solid piece of furniture of 1.3m wide with a 5cm think top of solid wood. I placed my new 40kg integrated amp to the left and placed my Rega RP3 40cm away on the right, on top of my Marantz CD player. After running the amplifier for a day or so I touched the plinth of my record player and noticed it vibrated. I traced the vibration back to the amplifier. When I then touched the front sides of the amplifier I could feel the entire chassis vibrate….which got me a bit worried. Next I also noticed a hum (like a computer hum) coming from the speakers which I could hear softly but distinctly throughout my 4x5m room - even with the volume all the way down. I then tried unplugging components, checked all wiring, changed power cables etc etc. Also tried a power cord without the ground pin which should rule out a ground loop.. No change. Next I moved the amp to the other side of the house where I run a Pima Luna ProLogue Classic which had no vibration at all. The speakers, PMC DB1, are pretty much dead with the volume all the way down unless you put your ear right up against the tweeter. Then I swapped the Prima Luna for my new amp and experienced the same vibration and hum - with all different cables and components. The amplifier is now back at the distributor and the message I am getting from both the distributor and the retailer is that this sort of vibration and hum are normal / not unusual for this type of amp and that I should start isolating and separating the amp and record player to fix this issue. To check my sanity I rang a few other retailers which sell high-powered tube amplifiers and they told me they would consider this unacceptable and pointed towards a transformer winding issue. One famously said “you pay for music, not noiseâ€. The reply from the distributor was that “retailers will tell you what you want to hearâ€. Great! My stance is that had I known this amplifier vibrated and hummed like this I would not have purchased it and that as such I would like a refund. The retailer seems to disagree. I also understand that vibration of the amp itself negatively influences the sound quality and reduces the life-span of the tubes. I would greatly appreciate your thoughts! Do you think this is normal for this sort of amp? Should I push to get a refund?
  4. I bought an amp stand/vibration platform from Mike Lenehan a few weeks ago. It's simple thing in many ways, a plate of steel sandwiched between two MDF sheets and covered in a nice, grippy, finish that reminds me of the nitrile gloves I have to wear at work sometimes. It feels lightly rubberized. I had to put it on a sheet of separate MDF as my floor is a bit more prone to damage from steel springs than it would first appear. Mike recommended that I ensure that the lower sheet couldn't move around as that would negate much of the effect of the platform and result in me spending cash on something that doesn't work. So I bought a packet of Blu Tack and distributed it as evenly as I could on the underside of the bottom sheet. In between the Blu Tack and the floor I have placed two pieces of standard A4 typing paper, torn up into quarters. The paper will, hopefully, ensure that the Blu Tack doesn't peel off pieces of the sealant that the floor is sprayed with (I've already had this happen on the feet of several amps, the rubber of the feet sticks to the sealant and brings it off in big flakes, that's the reason for the first, larger MDF sheet to the left of the amp stand). I say hopefully because I have yet to lift the lower sheet and check, I'm saving that surprise for later. So, now that I've got a sheet of MDF sitting on rainbow Blu Tack (the only packet available was the multi-coloured kind, red and yellow and pink and green...., hence my creation of the term "Rainbow Suspension") I can use it to place my amp stand on. And I did. I also placed an amp on it. (for reasons that I hope are obvious) Placement of the springs is very important and just a little more difficult than I would like it to be. You have to adjust them (in, out, forward and back) until the amp+platform wobbles in just the right way and at the right frequency. I didn't realize it at the time but the first few times I got it wrong. However, even though I got it wrong (lets call it "not quite right" from now on shall we?), I could certainly hear an effect on the sound stage of the amp in use but it didn't quite gell with me, it felt uncertain. I tried moving the springs around (obviously not enough) but after two or three attempts I gave up and decided to get back to it later. I had other things to do and the amp stand wasn't going anywhere, there was plenty of time to play with it in due course. Last Monday I was at Mikes place again, picking up my amps that Andy had fixed for me, and he, naturally, asked me about the stand. I said it wasn't quite what I thought it would be. Mike looked thoughtful for a second and said "It sounds like you haven't got it set up right." Knowing how little effort I had put in I promptly agreed with him and then said that I would get it right eventually and that I just had to keep on trying. Later that day I was back home and moving amps from the car into the lounge. Since I have many amps and only so much floor space I had to do some rearranging and it occurred to me that maybe I could stick the YBA cd player on the amp stand while I re-positioned things. So I did. And then, because I can be pretty damn slow sometimes, I started to remember my initial conversation with Mike about the amp stand. He had said that these platforms work even better with sources. At the time I just nodded and moved the conversation along, I was buying an amp stand. I intended to place amps on it. Amps are my thing. I was not buying a stand for things that were not amps. But... what if I did use it for things that were not amps? It's a strange concept but I guess it could happen. You know, in an infinite universe there has to at least be the possibility of such a thing happening. Even if only hypothetically. Once the idea had fully formed I thought why not, and gave it a try. Not only did it work but it worked so well it took two days for me to get up the willpower to remove it again in order to continue with my Sansui/Luxman/Accuphase work. Once I'm done with that the YBA will be going back on that stand and I want it to stay there. It won't of course because if it does any more integrated amps I review will not be able to be compared directly to any of the previously reviewed amps but I will want it to, badly. What did it do? Well it opened up the sound stage, put more space around each instrument, tripled the apparent size of the room and magically transformed the concrete walls into sheets of black silk. So yeah, you might say I like it. You might even say I like it a lot. (if you were prone to understatement that is) I've yet to try it with the Burson Conductor or any other pre-amps or DACs but I can already see it as a permanent fixture in my lounge. It's staying.
  5. Hi All, I was listening to a new set of Focal Chorus 826v speakers I received from another member and I noticed a slight crackling from the bottom cone on certain frequencies. Putting my ear near the speaker I realised it was constant but just more noticeable at certain frequencies, I swapped them around to rule out cables / channels from amp but it followed the speaker. I then played a frequency track which starts at 2000 down to 0 and I found its not just the bottom cone but the trebble tweeter also has issues at certain frequencies. Is it possible the crossover has been damaged or the cables in transit?? I have attached the audio from the test recorded of my mobile so it's not the best and even the "good" speaker has a slight issue in the recording but I think that's from me moving slightly. You can hear in the bad speaker recording the tweeter suddenly doesn't sound right and then when it fades away the bottom cones vibrating / crackling.
