Now that I have a decent amp and speaker set in my possession (Denon PMA-1315R and Focal Chorus 726V), I'm on to the next stage - the input. I'm trying to limit my spend here to roughly the $500 mark, give or take a couple of hundred! I'm thinking that a Raspberry Pi build might be a good start. Possible build options with a RPi 4 B+ (running MoOde to start with) I've considered are: External DAC via USB DAC HAT to amp via RCA SPDIF HAT to external DAC via coax (External DACs on the list are Topping D30 and Schiit Modi 3). I'm leaning towards option 2, using something like a Audiophonics DAC I-Sabre ES9038Q2M, as this seems to be a reasonably priced option which would presumably provide good SQ, with option 3 costing a bit more, and option 1, while being more budget friendly maybe comprising on SQ with the USB connection (unless I listen to fine folks at Audio Science)? Do my presumptions sound reasonable at this point? If option 2 is a good middle of the road plan, are there other DAC HATs I should consider that might be more affordable without compromising SQ (appreciate that SQ judgements are subjective). Next up - power supply. With a DAC HAT with USB power input, can I power just the DAC and not the Pi board? Considering an iFi iPower supply, but would upgrade to Audiophonics linear power if it's advisable. While I don't mind tinkering with software and plugging boards together, I'm not keen on soldering links on a board which I saw suggested somewhere... Lastly is an external SSD. Can this be plugged into the Pi board and still run off the power connected to the DAC HAT? Have spent some time Googling all this, but it's a minefield out there! Feedback from members here with experience on this would be greatly appreciated 👍
