Hi all, As I said in my introduction thread, I am the new owner of an Anthem MXR 510, having recently upgraded from a Yamaha RX-430. I will be upgrading my whole system over time, little by little, so I will be looking for plenty of guidance from the more experienced members, hence this thread. I am currently going to use my AV for a 90/10 music movies ratio. Therefore I am trying to achieve the best SQ for my limited budget. I have connected my Mac Mini to the Anthem via HDMI cable and I am impressed with the results. I am guessing it is the onboard dac that is making the differance. (I think ) there are 3 ways of making the connection to the Anthem. 1 HDMI as I have done, 2 Toslink cable, 3 usb to external dac to receiver. Is there a hierarchy of SQ when connecting to the receiver? At the back of the Anthem where the speaker outputs are, it says Speakers 8 Ohm. Whilst wiring up my speakers I realised that my front L/R are 8 ohm, but my centre speaker is 6 Ohm. I have run the system like this and it works, however I became a little hesitant and have now disconnected the centre speaker. My google fu shows division of opinions. Some say it could damage the amp while others say it will damage the speaker. My limited understanding is the impedance of the speaker varies, so i guess the 8 ohm printed on the speaker is the nominal impedance? If so would a 6 ohm centre speaker make that much of a difference? When I upgrade my speakers, which will be fairly soon, I will make sure that I buy 8 Ohm speakers. So at this stage I have wired up for a 2.1 system, except the .1 is not working . I plugged my cable into the sub connection on the 7.1 pre out (its the only sub connection I can see on the Anthem) and into the a Yamaha YST-SW320 Left(mono) connection. If I play music from Mini Mac i have no subwoofer output. I disconnected the cable from the AV and tapped the end of the cable with my finger and it has output. Therefore I am assuming the cable and the subwoofer are ok. Is the 7.1 pre out connection an LFE connection? I do have 4 pairs of speaker connections on the subwoofer, 2 pair input (from amp) and 2 pair output (to speakers). So that is an alternative way to wire it up. Or is it the usual way to wire it up for music? Finally I am looking to buy a dvd/cd player. I guess these days that means a blueray player. Budget would be about $1k, thereabouts. Happy to go over a little if its worth my while. I don't have a 4K television and am not planning on buying one anytime soon. I was looking at the Oppo 105 which appears to have quite a good reputation online, but it appears they don't make them anymore. I am happy to buy a superseded model as I have with the 510 as (I think) it can potentially give me more bang for my buck, so to speak. I don't really need bells and whistles ie wifi and streaming, but it has to be black! I am open to any suggestions. Thanks Dave
