  3. I recently recorded some drums at a studio in Sydney called Crash Symphony Productions(https://www.crashsymphony.com.au/recording-studio/). They had an interesting contraption that they had built which was essentially a drum tunnel. Most audio engineers would know what a drum tunnel is for a kick drum. It is designed to isolate the kick drum microphones from the rest of the drum kit. Bleed from other drums, particularly the cymbals, can get on to the kick mics. This contraption, they can coined "The Dog House", seemed to work really well. It was the best isolation of kick drum microphones that I had heard. We checked what it sounded like with it on the kick and with it off and the improvement was night and day. I was wondering if there are any hardware drum tunnels like this that are for sale on the market? I've not seen one myself.
  4. One of the things I like about attending hifi shows is discovering new artists, rediscovering negleglected/ignored artists, and sometimes even new genres of music. Many times I have heard an often-repeated song played at the hifi show and thought "I want to find that track or search for more by that artist". My discovery this year was African jazz musician Hugh Makesela. I heard him played through a system comprising Dohmann Helix turntable, Thrax monoblocks, and B&W 800 D3 speakers. The percussion was DYNAMIC, and the flugel horn had that nice brass sound which is simultaneously metallic and warm. I checked the album back cover and identified 'Analogue Productions, 45rpm' - search! I would like to acknowledge those exhibitors who facilitate requests by providing the options of turntable, CD and streaming. Some exhibitors seem limited to certain types of music, artists or a few songs, which may make it easier for them to run the show, but not so interesting for the visitors. Some of them have curated eclectic demo tracks which are usually interesting. Telos and Mcleans usually don't disappoint in my experience. This year, the Hulgich/Holton room was playing good music. Hifi is not just about gear-porn. The music is the reason. Often, I come across a room bristling with gear and accessorised to the max, then I listen to the music, and wonder "what's the point?" Having said that, music is a most enjoyable experience when shared, and there will be times when one needs to put up with it rather than complain or behave disrespectfully. Just accept that tastes vary, and no music will please everyone all of the time. GLWTSong

  6. Hi Friends. This is the first time I am looking to setup a home theatre system and I really need genuine advice. My main priority is great sound. I do have knowledge about some systems and how they work but not very technical. All I need is a great sound with my Panasonic Viera Plasma TV 55in HD to give me a theatre experience. Looking at multiple speakers at every corner of the room, by the way it is a big room with high ceiling without attic. I really don't know where to start, I have been thinking of this for many years but didn't have money to spend. Now, I have saved some but still limited with budget. I also like it to be connected to my Keyboard and to play music through my laptop or phone or USB. Great sound for music songs is a priority. Sorry for asking toot much with limited budget ($300-500) but I am really excited that finally I am looking to get my own system. Open to buy used if they are worth and warranty is not an issue. you can understand it is hard earned money. Thanks a lot in advance. S. Lateral
  7. I heard some of this guy's music on JazzRadio.com Premium, then scouted via Spotify to see whether he had complete discs worth pursuing. Sure enough, he's well represented there, and often has trio recordings with guitarists like Frank Vignola or Bucky Pizzarelli, as well as some solo piano and conventional trios (piano.bass,drums). This is relaxed in style but so well played that it bears repeated listening. A bit along the lines of Ruby Braff (trumpet) who always appears with talented side men and is so easy to take it's misleading as to the virtuosic skill being employed by all. Back to John Bunch, the discs to start with are Do Not Disturb, NY Swing, and Salute to Jimmy Van Heusen. I have been putting him on at early evening and letting it roll onward through the dinner hour.

The sound quality of the antipodes takes a big leap forward versus the mac mini i was using prior to this. This model has a 2TB internal SSD drive which should hold a substantial music collection. I have a collection of around 8TB so also connected to a Synology NAS via Ethernet. If I sell the Antipodes some of the music ( a lot is lossless FLAC) could be "accidentally" left on the antipodes SSD. I have the original box. The SSD can be upgraded to the GT equivalent with replacement power supply Pictures:

  14. Hi guys. I need your help! I have recently spent a lot of my time converting my dads and my CD collection to FLAC's to be able to use on my high res media player FiiO X1. Now my music tastes are extremely diverse and I don't just listen to one band or genre, so buying CD's can be quite costly as im sure we all know as well as 90% of the time I only like a handful of songs on a 12-15 song album. Is there sites online where I would be able to download high quality FLAC's free (excluding pirate bay because its just painful) or pay for them in AUD?

With Sydney receiving 8.3 million domestic overnight visitors and 2.8 million international visitors (year ending December 2012) Together with a Metropolitan population for the Greater Sydney area of 4.6 million we've got a lot of main stream entertainment that's broadcast nationally. But what is missed is the vibrant, enthusiastic raw talent we have under the surface of the general media, hence this thread to bring to the surface some of Sydney's best home grown, low cost and intimates shows you wouldn't normally hear about. 16. I would like to share the great news that VAF Research will have its first major presence at Adelaide’s wonderful world music festival, WOMADelaide, in 2016. During the four-day festival, which runs from March 11-14, VAF will offer shady hospitality in the VAF Sound Lounge, where you can groove to music streaming live from various stages via VAF’s brilliant speakers or range of headphones. Even better, VAF Research has negotiated a special deal for our nearest and dearest to enjoy Adelaide’s wonderful festival of world music, arts and dance. As a sponsor of WOMADelaide 2016, VAF is offering you, as a valued member of the VAF family, the chance to buy WOMADelaide tickets at 20 per cent off standard adult prices. This means that a four-day pass will cost you just $285 instead of the full rack rate of $356 while a three-day pass costs just $258 instead of $322. Individual Day & Night passes cost $151 (rather than $188) while an evening or Monday pass is just $111 (not $138). Ordering your VAF-discounted tickets is easy. Just visit the WOMADelaide website www.womadelaide.com.au, choose the ticket or tickets you want, press Buy Now and then enter the code word Sponsor20 in the Discount Code box. Remember, the discount code field is case-sensitive, so make sure to use a capital S for Sponsor20. The VAF discount, which applies to all adult ticket types, is available until midnight, February 29, 2016. At VAF, we are passionate about sound, so we can think of no better way to celebrate this passion than to share the sounds of the planet with our extended family. I hope you can join us at WOMADelaide 2016, imbibe the vibe and enjoy the hospitality of the VAF Sound Lounge. All the best Simon Wilde VAF Research
  17. The May 2015 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music, great sound and amicable company. Each month, the Sydney Audio Club presents the finest in high end audio systems for our members and guests. It's a bit like a private audio show once a month where you can hear and discuss equipment that you might not otherwise have the chance to audition. And you can bring along your own music to test the capabilities of the system or to just share with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. For our May meeting we have the core system of a dedicated and long-time club member. Over the years he has built up an enviable system primarily based on Dynaudio and Plinius equipment. It’s a dynamic, immediate and impressive sounding system. Details of the system… Marantz SA-11S1 CD/SACD player – Refer to http://www.marantz.asia/ap/pages/home.aspx and http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue28/marantz_sa11.htm Plinius M8 preamp – Refer to http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/plinius3/1.html Plinius SA-250 Mk4 power amp – Refer to http://www.pliniusaudio.com/Plinius_Range/Power_Amplifiers/SA_Reference.html and http://www.stereophile.com/solidpoweramps/506plinius/index.html. Dynaudio Confidence C4 Mk2 speakers – These are large floor standing speakers. Refer to http://www.dynaudio.com/home-audio/confidence/, http://www.avhub.com.au/product-reviews/hi-fi/dynaudio-confidence-c4-loudspeakers-392652 and http://www.stereophile.com/floorloudspeakers/794/index.html REL Stentor 3 subwoofer – Refer to http://www.audioreview.com/cat/speakers/subwoofers/rel-acoustics/stentor-iii/prd_371075_2741crx.aspx. OCOS speaker cables, Nordost Blue Heaven Interconnects – I believe Dynaudio still use OCOS cables internally in its speakers. OCOS cables lend an extremely clear and fast sound. The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD/SACD. Sorry, no provision for vinyl or flash drives this month. All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting. We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played. Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go. Whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, you will have the opportunity to listen, learn and share your experiences with others of a similar mind. Guests are always welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don't need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound. We will welcome you at the door. 21. Three albums starting with 2003's Get Born featuring the international phenom that was Are You Gonna Be My Girl (of the Apple iPod ad fame) as well as the hits Rollover DJ, Cold Hard ***** and Look What You've Done. They then followed this up in 2006 with the album Shine On which took their music to the next level in that (IMO) it was a fully realised album full of mature well crafted tracks. It featured the rip snorter Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is plus a few more classics like the title track and Kings Horses. Then in 2009 they released Shaka Rock which included the lukewarm first single She's A Genius as well as a bunch of other rather uninspired (once again, my opinion), raw and half baked tracks. What I remember most is that the lyrics seemed especially forced and the songs also seemed awkward... especially compared to the previous two albums. Then the next thing I hear they have had "internal" issues and broken up. Live they were incredible I saw them at the Pallace in St Kilda when I was living in Melbourne and they tore the roof off. I was also in Europe when they were touring for Shine On. I remember seeing their tour posters stuck up on walls in Berlin and Rome and going to the music stores and seeing them featured with standees and the like. Seems they were popular throughout most of Europe. Does anyone have any idea what happened to this great Aussie band? I heard the brothers did not see eye to eye but surely, if we have learnt anything from Mick and Keith there will be up's and downs in every bands history. Bands work so hard for that special sound, song and for recognition... seems somewhat silly to piss it all away over a few disagreements... Anyway, anyone else miss this band?
  22. Like 6moons or not, they are a resource. I drool over equipment I'll never own, perhaps never hear and read their eloquent prose, oftimes overly verbose, but always with an opinion. Then I got to thinking tonight, somewhere along the line perhaps 6moons music might broaden my horizon, and satisfy at least some longing for the new, equipment, music or otherwise. New to me. Much later I have 19 tabs open in Chrome and I've listened to plenty of quality music. Enjoy the journey. 23. The May 2014 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music and sound and convivial company. For May, we’ve decided to do something a bit different for us. We’ll have three book shelf speakers vying for your vote during the meeting. Yes, it’s a shoot-out! The contenders for the day will be: Aurelia Magenta speakers: These are great little speakers at a very competitive price point ($1500 AUD per pair). Cameron Keating from MaxMedia in Melbourne is kindly providing these for our meeting. (Refer to http://www.maxmedia.com.au/AURELIA_MAGENTA.html). The Magenta is small but huge with dynamics and bass. The frequency response is 45-20K Hz with 87db sensitivity. The bass quality and depth of the Magenta are one of the best in its class. Its tweeter sports a 2nd generation Energy Controlling Waveguide-technology (ECW). The ECW seamlessly adapts the tweeter to the bass unit at the cross frequency. The overall result is a pleasant and uniform sound with a natural and three-dimensional soundstage. KEF LS-50 speakers: These speakers likely need no introduction. They’ve been receiving raves reviews around the world. (Refer to http://www.kef.com/html/au/showroom/flagship_hi-fi_series/LS50/overview/). This diminutive speaker delivers a rich, multi-dimensional soundstage that is out of all proportion to its size. Their retail price is $1800 AUD per pair. Stones Sound Studio (SSS) Artisan r260 Signature speakers: These speakers provide crystal clear highs, pinpoint imaging, articulate tight and fast bass, and a wide sound stage with low distortion which provides fatigue free long term listening. The drivers are by Peerless and are manufactured to SSS specifications. The mid/bass are 2 x 5" 5 layer treated composite drivers with cast alloy frame. The tweeter are treated soft fabric wide dispersion dome - 27mm (1"). The cabinets have a double laminated 38mm low resonance front baffle. The crossover is at 3.78khz with phase coherent audiophile grade SCR capacitors and non-inductive resistors. The internal wiring is pure copper OFC star configuration, and low loss HF cable. They have a frequency range of 42hz to 25khz and a sensitivity of 92.5db Spl at 1khz/1m. The Artisan retails for $3200 AUD per pair. The supporting act for this shoot-out will include the Marantz SA-11 CD/SACD player and the Audio-gd Master 10 integrated amplifier. Marantz SA-11 CD/SACD player: The SA-11 is an older player but most definitely a worthy and great player. Its Redbook play back is excellent, and its SACD play back was considered amongst the very best at the time. It has a huge toroidal power supply, a vibration-resistant drive mechanism and double-layered bottom plate. Audio-gd Master 10 integrated amplifier: This integrated amplifier has been winning many people over. (Refer to http://www.audio-gd.com/Master/Master10/Master-10EN.htm and http://6moons.com/audioreviews/magnepan2/4.html) The amp is a fully balanced design with a twist: each of the two balanced inputs and two single-ended inputs have their signal converted to current mode before being amplified by a single Class A gain stage. Volume attenuation also takes place in the current domain. A quad FET zero feedback output buffer returns current to voltage drive. The amp has discrete analogue stages without any op-amps or coupling caps in the signal channels. Audio-gd keep their costs down through a direct-selling sales model (approx. $1900 USD). Cabling will be Wireworld and Eichmann. The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD or SACD. 24. Well, Im hugely late to finding these mixed tapes only just downloading the current one, #55. Really good concept and quite a few tracks I am really enjoying, the first two being a highlight. Link is: http://mb.mercedes-benz.com/en/mixedtape/ Shame they are mp3 only, though its *not too bad* I guess if you really like a track/artist you can find the full quality somewhere. They are updated every 8 weeks and once the new one is released there is no easy way to obtain the previous one. (though if you want the back catalogue, pm me.. I know a guy who knows a guy who knows a link)
