  1. Hi Everyone What is your favourite western movie? (for those who like westerns of course) My favourite is "The Magnificent Seven" but I also like the three iconic Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns starring Clint Eastwood......no titles needed here.......lol In my opinion the themes to all these movies are timeless......Elmer Bernstein and Ennio Morricone respectively.

  5. Howdy all, Happy New Year! I thought I'd start a little side topic based on my movie watching over the Christmas break. I bought a nice little sub as self-given present, and then went on a... somewhat excessive (according to my better half) quest to find some material (mostly movies) that would test it out.. along with the other speakers in my home theatre. Now, you'd think in this age, that there are many fine movies that test out a subwoofer. But boy was I struggling a bit to find something that really "reaches deep", for more than a few moments, a scene, or even at all! So I "went to the all-high oracle of knowledge (google) for other people's suggestions. Many people suggested movies far too numerous to mention here. But after taking some of their advice, I'll outline what I watched: Jurassic Park is a classic, for the stomping of the T-Rex... ok, that has it's bassy moments. Star Wars.... (anything really) but a special mention goes to Ep II for the seismic charges. (The first thing I tested the sub on). U571 (Old now, but good atmospherics). House of Flying Daggers. (The drum scene is pretty good for bass, pity about the story). Pacific Rim... yes, there's some VERY nice bass here. Master & Commander. (I only have the DVD, but the cannons certainly have some punch to them). Thor I & II (Yep those are good ones) The Avengers... Good Bass. Lots of crunch. Captain America I & II. Some nice bass in all that.. but nothing really seems to stand out in my mind. Super 8.... yes... that was a train crashing in my home.... To my neighbourhood.... I'm sorry the sound disturbed you, but truth be told, I'm not sorry I did it! :~) Brave... I know, I was shocked too! Great atmospherics for the overall sound system too! Lord of the Rings trilogy... with special mention of the battle scenes in the Two Towers, and Return of the King. Good bass with the War Oliphants (Elephants) collapsing, and the catapaulted rocks. Letters from Iwo Jima. As far as the sounds of warfare can be considered "Nice". The Dark Knight... that's a fair whack of bass! The Matrix movies have some nice moments, especially with the EMP pulse and many fight scenes. Tropic Thunder (Please forgive my watching of Ben Stiller) but the explosion in the beginning is very cool. The latest Star Trek movies. Aside from the sound being great, I just couldn't help but think back to "Heroes" and muse "Why Sylar, your ears have grown so pointy!". However, for SHEER DEPTH, DURATION, AND IMPACT.... MY PERSONAL WINNER IS: The latest (2014) reboot of the Godzilla movie. A 12" sub is good... a 15" or bigger would be better! (Or multiple subs for a noticeable improvement). There's so much bass! Power plants collapsing, planes crashing, giant creatures fighting like Pacific Rim, but a bit bassier (yes, I know I didn't think that was possible) Go watch it, with the sound cranked, and you'll understand why! I'd love to hear what movies get your fillings rattled out! Also, what movies do you think has the most immersive sound? Love to hear your thoughts! Hamish.
  6. Found this yesterday amongst SBS On Demand's movies. Set in 1941 during the siege of, another true (?) story about amazing people with huge hearts doing things we would find totally inconcevable. Loved it, highly recommended. ps If I've placed this wrongly moderators, please amend.
  7. Hi Friends. This is the first time I am looking to setup a home theatre system and I really need genuine advice. My main priority is great sound. I do have knowledge about some systems and how they work but not very technical. All I need is a great sound with my Panasonic Viera Plasma TV 55in HD to give me a theatre experience. Looking at multiple speakers at every corner of the room, by the way it is a big room with high ceiling without attic. I really don't know where to start, I have been thinking of this for many years but didn't have money to spend. Now, I have saved some but still limited with budget. I also like it to be connected to my Keyboard and to play music through my laptop or phone or USB. Great sound for music songs is a priority. Sorry for asking toot much with limited budget ($300-500) but I am really excited that finally I am looking to get my own system. Open to buy used if they are worth and warranty is not an issue. you can understand it is hard earned money. Thanks a lot in advance. S. Lateral
  8. Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky A while ago we watched Coco Before Chanel (available fairly cheaply on iTunes), the story of that famous lady up to the point where she started the fashion house. Her origins were modest, with some seaminess of another sort while she and her sister made up a singing and dancing duo in vaudeville theatre. The second episode, in effect, is this one about her and Stravinsky. By this time she is running her business and is doing very well, with a lovely country house and servants. The film opens with the lead-up to an embarrassing premiere of Stravinsky’s (Le Sacre Du Printemps) The Rite of Spring, which has been the subject of many discussions ever since, and some witty plays on the name. It has been called Le Scare Du Printemps or The Fright of Spring. But suffice to say for now that it caused a riot at the premiere, and didn’t help Stravinsky’s reputation for some time after. He was down on his luck with a family to feed when Coco offered the whole family a place to live – in her nice country house, practically a Chateau. You might guess that romance is in the air, and indeed it arrives at around the 55 minute mark. But you shouldn’t fast forward to the naughty bits, the whole slow-burn story is quite fascinating. And everything is so well done, it must have cost heaps to film. SBS has this movie up for free on their website SBS On Demand. It’s a French production with subtitles. The productions values are absolutely top class, as is the casting and acting.
  9. This week's cheap 99c movie rental is Arrival (2016) which I haven't yet watched but might be good! These weekly movies are a bit of a mixed bag but sometimes excellent.

  11. Netflix just landed in Australia! Has anyone signed up yet?? Anything good on there?
  12. Hi All I'll introduce myself hear first post. I'm Mark and from Perth Western Australia I do like watching movies and youtube music videos. I am building a house and its at roof cover stage and I'm kicking myself hard because if i'd discovered this forum or the shop that sells the equipment I would of made the home theater bigger; enough for 2rows etc.... now I am dreaming. Anyway I have been reading this forum, visiting shops and reading product reviews. I'm lost and confused... .......but I've not given up I still want a kick-ass ground shaking theater room but I'm a n00b so I turn to you guys as you seem very enthusiastic, with heaps of experience and wise knowledge, which I would love to copy and paste from your brain to mine by a USB I have uploaded and image of my small room that's going to be my theater and the 2 quotes. Yes i know double doorssssss. at least I put 2 conduits in and extra power at the back but my wife wants to cover the hole room with curtains yes 360 degrees and I got thick carpets too. so I am young and don't own any furniture nor equipment so I went to west coast HIFI and got 2 quotes from them and I get the feeling of disappointment. Today I've taken a day off work to go window shopping, there isn't many places in Perth that do Home Theater, theirs only west coast HIFI, surround sounds and Douglas hifi, oh and Frank Prowse HiFI. I have not looked into online or international first I need to know what I need. My room is 4430 wide so nice 4 seat leather couch will go in. but 3890 long bit close to screen Bulkhead (wall to 700in all way round) 28c or 2400 high center of ceiling is 31c or 2700 high Bow i did use this website with the 2 different high i cant work out if i got a good room. Screen size I will be sitting about 3500 away I am counting about 400mm for the recliners space. Some say I could get away with 4K Hisense 75" UHD LED LCD 100Hz 3D Smart TV for $4500 others recommend a projector and 100'' size max Now i love B&W speakers especially the cm10 s2 one shop today said that's over kill I love bass,. in my car i have a nice 10'' that made me sick at the start now I feel its losing power or I'm getting deaf. In my opinion the two quote I got are; over my budget, I wonder if I could save somewhere on parts, and I did not like the Yamaha speaker did not cut it for me. The sales man has also added in the quote krix subwoofer because the psb subwoofer was not loud enough for me the krix did make the room shake i think the panasonic DMR-BWT945GL would be great if i went for projector that unit would be my smart hub. Therefore my question is, what would recommend for me. 5.1 or 5.2 ? TV or Projector ? speaker recommendation ( floor or bookshelf on stands ?) (subs I do like if I feel the sound or vibration or neighbors complaining ) ? ( rear in ceiling or ? ) Yamaha power and pre or normal av receiver ? bluray player do i need to be worried about them did i miss any questions ? feel free to add model numbers if you recommending I will appreciate everything I am give, as now I'm in a dilemma.
  13. Post up your reviews of movies. Robot & Frank 10/10 This is high science fiction, it's the Asimov of scifi movies, from a time before scifi was space opera. It's exploring some beautifully complex and touching themes, it's multi layered, it's approachable. It's all class, every line every scene. Robot & Frank could make you cry and laugh, consider and care, but frankly if it doesn't you might as well be a robot. Feel free to include old movies, or the movie you watched tonight, or even, shock horror, the latest cinema release.
