  1. I have been admiring all the systems being showcased and all of them look terrific. Beautifully set up in gorgeous or inviting rooms. I look at my rig and the best I can say is it looks industrial. I have industrial high-end audio. It has always been a case of form follows function for me. I try to get it to sound right first and then think about prettying it up. I am thinking of buying a Symposium Isis rack to pretty it up but I have to balance that purchase against buying a pair of Magnepan DWM woofers. The first rule to putting a good system together is getting the right speaker for the room. Ofcourse, I did not start off with the MG20.7 and I'm not really a fan of planar speakers, but for the price, the MG20.7 is perfect for this room. I never ever thought I would reach this level of sound in my life time, but you keep improving the system and one day you'll find you are listening to good sound, not just okay sound. When I bought this place I envisaged it as a music listening room. I ended up surprising myself by how good it is. I bought the Aura+Graham 1.5t secondhand from Mike Kontor when he was at Armadale. A few years ago he told me he sold his Aura tt. I think this tt was his.
  2. Item: Magnepan MG 1.5 QR Location: Rowville VIC Price: $1200 Item Condition: Very good, etc - see pics. Reason for selling: Fund new purchase Payment Method: Pickup - Cash Extra Info: I imported these from the US some years ago, they've only been played a handful of times. They were in original oak (and fading) and grey cloth, quite a dated look for this model. I bought new black cloths from Magnepan, and a friend did 5 coats of gloss black for the frame. I think it looks way sexier than the original scheme. It's been a while and I don't think I have the original bolt on legs anymore. I hammered up some stands where you can easily just lift them in and out of a 'holster'. Super easy. Don't get me wrong, NOTHING vanishes like these maggies do, vocals are incredible. But I'm a conventional speaker kind of guy and they've just been sitting unused. Auditions welcome and encouraged, there is nothing quite like a planar. Pickup preferred, but I will drop it off at a pack'n'send or courier of choice. I do not have the expertise to pack these safely for transit. Pictures: .
  3. Item: Magnepan 1.7 with gold fuses Location: Inner Sydney Price: 2,500 firm Item Condition: 9/10 Reason for selling: toddler Payment Method: Pickup only - Cash or COD (no boxes, no postage) Extra Info: I am in love with these speakers, and my wife is too. The white cloth makes them disappear in the room. I keep them against the wall and slide them off for critical listening. The soundstage is wide and tall and deep as you would not believe. The detail is impressive. The bass with this model is tight and well defined. They come with the (stupidly expensive) gold fuses which are much better than the standard ones. I never thought I could think of selling these but my 10 months old son seems to like them too. Let me add that: - the white colour really has a wow factor and your wife/partner/friends will love it - you will not need a super powerful high-current amp to make these sing. I had them on a NAD Power envelope 2100 and they sounded SWEET. But if you do want to get the extra kick out of them - without doing laborious structural modifications - I am also selling a pair of Speltz Zero Autoformers (boxed version, in cherry colour), which is what Bill McLeans recommends to improve the kick of Maggies (in fact he is now retailing the Autoformers himself). The Autoformers are on a separate AD but happy to make a package deal with the Maggies. Pictures:
  4. Hi All, I'm thinking of buying some Magnepan speakers and the MMG is on my curious list. Are there any MMG owners in Melbourne who might allow me to have a quick listen to see if the MMG's will float my boat? I've heard the 1.7's and the newer i version so I know the sound but I'd like to hear the MMG. I have various speakers from Tannoy and Kef as well as other gear I can bring for the fun of it if that is of interest. Cheers, Legs11
  5. I want to attenuate the levels of the mid and treble units in my MG3.7. When I use 10W wire wound resistors I seem to lose the liveliness of recordings, but without digital correction, the wire linked 3.7s are a tad bright for my reflective living room. I thought using 28gauge Nichrome wire which is 13.77ohm/metre & Jaycar sell for $4.95 for 4m & no doubt Bunnings will sell for even less. But I can cut to required length, parallel or quadruple wind to get even lower impedance for values of less than 1 ohm & chuck away if value is no good. Much prefer if the implementation should not have any effect on SQ. Has anybody used Nichrome wire [composition Nickel 80% Chromium 20%] for attenuation of mid or tweeter levels in their speakers ? Any audible effects compared to 10W wire wound resistors ? I am hoping that the series inductance is the culprit, but I am probably wrong. I am anticipating my final values will be 0.5ohm for midrange and 0.75ohm for treble. Any suggestion for commercial resistors other than 10W Duland Cast for this? Thanks HB
  6. The Sunday 20th May meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music and sound and convivial company. Each month, the Sydney Audio Club presents the finest in high end audio systems for our members and guests. It's a bit like a private audio show once a month where you can hear and discuss equipment that you might not otherwise have the chance to audition. And you can bring along your own music to test the capabilities of the system or to just share with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The Sydney Audio Club will have another great system for your listening enjoyment on Sunday 20th May. Bill McLean of McLeans Smarter Home Entertainment will be bringing in a complete system comprised of the following: Magneplanar 3.7's with aftermarket braced stands – these speakers have been receiving rave reviews around the world and are a noticeable improvement over the famous 3.6’s that they replace. Dual Magtech Stereo amps (run in mono) – high current amps by Sanders Sound Systems designed to drive Maggies. Magtech pre-amp Oppo Multi-media Player Silver Circle 5.0 power Conditioner AND… Bill will also be bringing a new, and probably somewhat controversial product from BSG Technologies called the 'qol Signal Completion Stage'. This was reviewed recently in The Absolute Sound by Robert Harley. Although he admitted to being sceptical prior to listening, it took only a brief session to convince him of its merits. See the details here on Bill McLeans’ web site. As usual, the second half of the music sessions will be BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite SACD/CD discs to share – sorry, no vinyl this month. All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting. We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played. Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go. Whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, you will have the opportunity to listen, learn and share your experiences with others of a similar mind. Members and Guests welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don't need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound. We will welcome you at the door. Venue: Epping Creative Centre Address: 26 Stanley St, Epping When: Sunday 20th May Doors open at 1pm Meeting starts at 2pm Best regards, Tom Waters President Sydney Audio Club www.sydneyaudioclub.org.au tomwaters@sydneyaudioclub.org.au
