  1. Hi All Was given a L-530 for Christmas, a beautiful beast but its got a few faults. I'd really like to get it working and I need some help. It's Japanese so I've powered it with a cheap 500w 100v step down. I've found and downloaded the circuit diagram, owners and service manuals. It looks reasonable clean inside, I reckon its been opened a few times as all the screws don't match. The transistors on the two PB-1393-1 (L&R power amps boards?) are different with with 2x 2SC2922 52Y and 2x 2SA1216 53Y on left board, 2x 2SC2526 NW(X) and 2X 2SA1076 OH(X) on the right. The right looks original. One of the caps (?) in the phono stage looks to have leaked but thats the only obvious blow out. Initial testing done with CD player connected to AUX input and both headphones (first time) and speakers via speaker A output. On power up; All the panel lights come on with the warm up flashing. Red LEDs on the power amp boards light (4 each) as do the two on phono input stage. Warm up relay (RY 201) triggers after maybe 10 seconds, light stabilises and music is produced out of the left channel only. About 10 seconds later relay triggers again, warm up flashes and music stops. Power off for a short while lets me repeat, with the same result. I'll probably have to take it to someone here in Adelaide before too long (suggestions as to who welcomed) but am keen to go as far as I can before then. Thanks for reading my post, any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
  2. Item: Luxman A522 Belt Drive Turntable fitted with Grace G-707 Tonearm & Denon DL103 Moving Coil Cartridge Location: Melbourne Price: Reduced from $1150 to $850!! FIRM because this is already a bargain Item Condition: Beautiful clean condition apart from some scratching to the lid. Operationally perfect and set up ready to play Reason for selling: FAR too many turntables Payment Method: Cash, Bank Transfer or Paypal Extra Info: A superb example of this rare turntable, with classic looks but serviced and upgraded to current audiophile standards by turntable maestro Rick Powell. Adjusted for optimum performance with correct VTA, azimuth, overhang, offset angle, tracking force and bias correction under test conditions. Refurbishment of all electrical contacts and cabling, horizontal and vertical relocation of the arm via the locking collar and re-aligning the bearing has resulted in the best performing sample of this combination you will find. It will certainly surpass more expensive units that are not properly set up. Photos: Advertisements without photos of the actual item will not be approved.
  3. Trying to fix the issue with this Luxman amp. Takes a while to get out of protection on start-up. When outputting more than about 1W, speaker makes popping sound, if left playing, makes one really loud pop and turns itself back to protection mode. I took it open and got some pictures. Seems like the amp had been repaired before. One of the amp board looks like it's been blown up before. the main power transistors looks different on the power amps, is that a concern? The 2SA679 is swapped for 2SB655A and 2SC1079 is swapped to 2SD675A. Any ideas what would be causing the issue? Any help is appreciated.

  5. Item: Luxman L-509U Integrated Amplifier Location: Melbourne Price: 5800 Item Condition: as new Reason for selling: need money Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: I am one only owner. Bought new for over $8000 in 2012 The amp has never been repaired, works very well. No issues, can give a week warranty. The unit has never been loud more then 9am because I live in a flat and I like my neighbors. Winner of SoundStage's Reviewer's Choice Award (February 2009) "The L-509u was one dead-quiet integrated amp with an ultra-low noise floor, resulting in the blackest of backgrounds from which the music would emerge in solid, focused, three-dimensional images. Additionally, the L-509u was tonally neutral, and did not favor one end of the frequency spectrum over another; instead its sonic signature was geared toward delivering the least-colored, most musically natural performance, regardless of the type of music." "What impressed me most, however, was the L-509u’s control of the bass." "Subterranean? Without a doubt." Click here to be redirected to the SoundStage review. The L-509u features the new high quality electronic selector switch, which is the heart of the C-1000f pre-amp (one of Luxman’s 80th anniversary commemoration models). The sound quality deterioration using the new electronic input switch is now minimal, while channel separation and crosstalk efficiency were raised substantially in comparison with the previous L-550A / L-590A / L-507 /L-509SE. In addition the illuminated position indicator around the input selector knob, makes it much easier to view the selected position even from afar. The integrated amplifier also benefits from the ALPS volume control used in the CL-88 vacuum tube preamplifier. A massive solid-brass, four gang potentiometer. The amplifier section has not been ignored either; noise and distortion has been kept to a minimum with the introduction of ODNF version 2.2. The deep, rich, wonderfully textured tone is available here in Luxman’s most powerful integrated amplifier. No compromises made for sound quality; designed for the musical purist. This is Luxman’s ultimate integrated amplifier. * Equipped with ODNF version 2.2 for minimal noise and distortion. * Solid brass, four gang attenuator from the CL-88 tube preamp. * Electronic input selector, trickle down technology from the flagship C-1000f. * Relay power source with large storage capacity. * One pair of RCA inputs with Luxman's eddy current defeating technology, * Peel Coat PCB with gold plated traces. * Power Output Display Meter in dB * Switch to split the preamp from the power amp. * High quality phono stage. * Two pairs of balanced inputs. * Custom parts designed by LUXMAN, even the paint used on the resistors to denote the value has been carefully chosen after many hours of comparitive listening. The volume control on the L-509u is a solid brass, four gang ALPs potentiometer, its too heavy to be motorised, hence the lack of a remote control, it does however provide a linear attentuation & gain throughout the range, holding both channels perfectly in balance even at low amplitude. The tone controls might seem like an anachronism in this day and age of minimalism, but they can be remarkably effective in bring to life a less than perfect music collection. We all have music gems in our collection that are sonicly challenging. A lot of the 1980's CDs are quite harsh sounding and the digital glare can be quite fatiguing. Reduce the treble slightly and while the harsh CD is not going to suddenly sound like a reference recording, at least it will now be perfectly listenable. Sit back relax, enjoy the music & forgot about the HiFi. When you want to bypass the tone controls, just engage the Line Straight switch. Printed Circuit Boards normally have a green coat (dye) that can be printed upon, so the manufacturer knows where to place the copper traces and where to insert the resistors & capacitors. LUXMAN's designers don't like the sound of the green dye, so instead they print onto a plastic peel coat and remove it once the traces and mounting holes are in place. Then the copper traces are gold plated to reduce resistance across the circuit. In the photo below you will notice that Peel Coat circuit boards are an off-white color. It’s this fanatical attention to detail that delivers such superior sound quality. The on board phono stage is not an after thought on any of the Luxman integrated amplifiers, rather a well executed pre-preamplifer. The MC input has 55dB of gain (thats a multiplication of 550x) and is suitable for medium to high output MC cartridges, approx .7mV. While the MM input has 35dB of gain. Extensive listening was applied to the high purity, oxygen free copper (OFC) cables which are used to transmit the signal throughout the amplifier. These cables have a minimal audible signature and minimal electrical effect on the audio waveform. Linear wide bandwidth frequency response is achieved by the low measured values of both inductance and capacitance. The result, the cables do not color the sound, but pass it through, quickly. There is a high quality headphone amplifier, accessible from the front panel. The headphone output is taken from the speaker output,, assuring you of the highest fidelity. LUXMAN did not cut corners in the L-509u; notice lots of custom solid copper parts including screws & fasteners & mounting plates. Not to mention the gold plated peel coat circuit boards. This is one channel complete with heat sink. Here is a clever device found on the back of every Luxman powered product. You press the button and it will check the phase of the electricity it is receiving. If the AC outlet in the wall is incorrectly wired, meaning the live and neutral are swapped, a red LED will turn on to warn you. You only need to press it once, when you are installing a product to check that everything is in order. Its a simple mistake, that occurs often, and one that can seriously undermine your listening enjoyment. 7. Item: Luxman 505u Integrated Amp Location: Adelaide, SA Price: 2500 Item Condition: Excellent, mint condition Reason for selling: Purchased a Devialet 220 Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only. Extra Info: Two things to note: - The remote is dodgy with its Volume control; over the years I have either changed volume manually or use an external DAC as preamp. - I imported the 505u direct from Japan so it was assembled for the Japanese market and set to 100volt mains electricity. Therefore it comes with a Kashimura TI-20 step-up transformer (photos attached). There has never been any issue playing it here in Adelaide. The Luxman has been in daily use since July 2010. It has always worked well and given me great listening pleasure. A User Manual and the original Brochure are attached. The 505u has a phono input with both MM & MC selections. It can be used as a pre-amp only or power amp only. The 505u weighs 21kg with dimensions: 467(W)x179(H)x437(D) mm. The transformer weighs 4.5kg and its dimensions are 170x135x100mm. I will post both items if there is no buyer in Adelaide for pickup - postage costs would have to be checked and agreed to. I still have the original box available for transportation. 13. Item: Luxman P-200 Headphone Amplifier Location: Carlton North, 3054 Price: $750 $700 NEGOTIABLE (RRP $1,999) Item Condition: Excellent. Original paperwork and packaging included. Reason for selling: No longer using headphones Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: Fantastic, natural and musical sounding headphone amplifier from Luxman that operates in pure Class-A. Lives up to the Luxman name both in sound and looks - beautiful smooth and rich midrange. I've been using this amp with my Grado PS-500e's (also for sale). They are a great match for each other - I brought this amp along to Addicted to Audio when I purchased the Grados so that I could demo everything. If anyone is interested in purchasing both, I can work out a package deal. The functionality of the headphone amp is excellent. Two RCA inputs for multiple inputs (I've been using a DAC and turntable) and a Through Out, so you can place the headphone amp in the chain between other amps. I much prefer this setup to the flagship Luxman headphone amp, which only has one RCA input. I imported this amp from Japan myself and paid a professional engineer and technician (Gary Cawsey) to switch the amp from 100V to 230V to run on Australian mains. This was a very simple job that he performed very quickly, as the original transformer inside the amp is switchable. I've only had the amp since the end of last year and you can tell it's seen very little use from its previous owner. I have the original packaging and all the paperwork to go with it. Interstate buyers welcome, as the box is very well protected. Demos welcome.

  15. Hi This is actually a reply to another SN member's review of his Luxman 509X Int Amp. After replying, I thought it would be nice to share it with other SN members. Just my thoughts on the three Luxman amps I have owned over the last few years. I have been lucky enough in the last few years to have own the 550AX Class A as my first Luxman Int Amp, then due to a house move, needed more power, I got the 590AXII Class A, now living most of my time in Thailand, I am enjoying the 509X Class AB. I have also listened to the 507uX Class AB extensively. My gear from the 550AX to 590AXII and 509X haven't changed - Macbook > JRiver or Roon App > Chord Hugo TT DAC (Cable = Audioquest Diamond USB from Mac to Hugo TT) > every Luxman Amp (Cables = MIT SL8 RCA interconnects) > Spendor D7 SPEAKERS (Cables MIT SL 9). Quick rating of each amp: 1. 550AX Class A 20 watts pc. (Build - 8) - (Look - 10 - if you like the Retro style) - (Power/Drive - 8 - ONLY if you have a small room, efficient speakers & don't listen loud) - (Clarity/Details - 7) - (Quietness - 7) - (Soul/Emotion - 8) 2. 590AXII Class A 30 watts pc. (Build - 9) - (Look - 10 - if you like the Retro style) - (Power/Drive - 8 - ONLY if you have a small/medium room & efficient speakers) - (Clarity/Details - 8) - (Quietness - 8) - (Soul/Emotion - 9) 3. 509X Class AB 120 watts pc. (Build - 9.5) - (Look - 10 - if you like the Retro style) - (Power/Drive - 9.5 - Most room sizes and most speakers) - (Clarity/Details - 9.5) - (Quietness - 9.5) - (Soul/Emotion - 8) Quick summary of each amp: 1. 550AX Class A 20 watts pc. Fantastic Class A Int Amp. Low power, which leads to other limitations. Only buy if you don't have enough money to buy the 590AXII for more Power and Soul/Emotion. 2. 590AXII Class A 30 watts pc. Great Class A Int Amp. Still low power for larger rooms. BUT simply amazing tones that ooze Soul and Emotion especially in vocals and acoustic music. Luxman Class A Masterpiece. 3. 509X Class AB 120 watts pc. Stunning Class AB Int Amp. Tons of power and punch. So quiet, so much details, so clean, etc. Only negative against the 590AXII - doesn't have that Luxman Class A Soul and Emotion. Against Class AB Amp in this price range, the 509X has very few to no rivals. My "Ultimate" Amp: *A Luxman because of the build quality, features and acceptable price. Compared to nearest & equal rival, Accuphase, Luxmans are a bargain. *A Luxman Class A Int Amp for the tone, soul and emotions that they produce. *A Luxman Class A 60 watts pc Int Amp!! - maybe impossible and imagine the heat! Play more music! To the 2 SN members who bought my 550AX and 590AXII, hope you are enjoying them. Photos of 550AX, 590AXII and 509X

  17. Hi, I recently purchased a Luxman L-509X integrated and am really enjoying it. My speakers are Dynaudio Focus 110s on stands and my listening area is an average size lounge. I'm looking to upgrade to better bookshelf speakers and read that Harbeth and B&W match well with Luxman. Any other suggestions? (up to about $7500). Oh, any speaker cable recommendations for such a setup? Thanks Artie

  22. Item: Luxman 5C50 and 5M21 (Pre/power amp combo) Location: Carlton North, 3054 Price: $1600 Item Condition: Very good Reason for selling: No longer have the space to set them up Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: These pre and power amps were a part of Luxman's Laboratory Reference Series (LRS) released in 1977. I am selling these because I my living circumstances have changed and I no longer have the space to set up my speakers, so I'm just using a headphone setup for now. These amps are priced for a quick sale because they're not being used, just taking up space. These amps should speak for themselves - they are truly a part of Luxman's high end offerings during their peak pre-Alpine era. There's plenty of good reading material in the links at the bottom of the listing. Hilberink (a true Luxman fanatic) describes them as "exceptional, unprecedented and powerful sound, one of the best amplifiers ever made". I bought these amps from a fellow SNA member a few months ago. He had fully recapped these amps with Elna Simic II and Nichicon caps. He also cleaned all the switches and controls with deoxit. These amps have the later, open model DML IC's which can be replaced if they go bad. Very unlikely, but it's good to know that there's nothing in these amps that can be replaced. Cosmetic condition is great especially for their age. There is one tiny pinhole mark next to the power button on the power amp, and some slight scratching on the top of the power amp (which you can't see, if you stack pre on top of power as they were designed to go in a rack). A couple letters have partially rubbed off, for example the "C" in "VOLUME CONTROL", but this is very common on these Luxmans. This is as good as you'll get it! You won't find a set of these, in this condition, for this price anywhere else. Open to reasonable offers. Local pick up only, these are heavy and I don't have the time at the moment to pack them for shipping. Will consider shipping them if packing and courier can be organised by the buyer. As far as I know these were pretty much a Japanese market item only, so these amps are 100V. I can provide a high quality 500W Tortech step down converter with the sale, if required. Pictures:
  23. Item: Luxman 5C50 and 5M21 (Pre/power amp combo) Location: Brunswick 3056, Melbourne Price: $2000 $1800 negotiable Item Condition: Excellent - 9/10 Reason for selling: Looking to try something else. Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: These pre and power amps were a part of Luxman's Laboratory Reference Series (LRS) released in 1977. A couple weeks into using them I had some slight issues with a popping sound in one channel, so I took them to Garry Cawsey in Brunswick who checked them over and gave them a clean bill of health. He fixed up some soldering joints and cleaned some connections. It is possible that the popping sound had been coming from my speakers and not my amplifier, but I took the amps for a check over anyway for peace of mind. They have been performing excellently since then. These amps have the later, open model DML IC's which can be replaced if they go bad. Very unlikely, but it's good to know that there's nothing in these amps that can be replaced. Cosmetic condition is marked as 9/10.
