  1. Seems Edmund has been working on a new bearing housing for his SSP12 inner platter. It appears to be a double ball race design going by the cross-section diagram on the Linn forum. The Mober certainly spins a lot longer than the Cirkus bearing. I wonder if there is any difference in SQ. Mober bearing housing: Linn Cirkus bearing housing:
  2. As the main Star Wars saga concludes, I came across this blast from the past (see photo which for some reason has rotated 90deg). This was very much in keeping with the cheeky Linn & Naim marketing at the time but timeless in its message nonetheless. The main difference for mine is that the Source these days starts at the mastering/file quality, pre the turntable / CD player.
  3. Item: Linn Akurate DS Media Player/Streamer Location: Brunswick Melbourne Price: ($2200) now $1900 Item Condition: excellent Reason for selling: just trying things out Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: This is in excellent condition with no visible marks. Manufactured in 2015, it has the latest software installed and is Roon ready, as well as being able to stream music from Spotify or a network server. It has the remote etc as well as the original packing so easy to ship. Very easy to set up, I just plugged in the ethernet cable and it worked from the get-go. Bought this last week from a fellow SNA member. Just wanted to try it while waiting for a component I have on back order. original ad: hotos: Advertisements without photos of the actual item will not be approved.
  4. OK, there have been big changes here. A year or so ago my system looked like this: There are photos of this system's evolution here and my old system in a shed in Melbourne here. Anyway, we moved house before the UK "summer" and I fancied a change/couldn't be bothered packing up all that gubbins so I decided to sell up and have a complete change of direction. All that is left is a stack of Fraim and the LP12 rig. The Fraim will be sold soon . The current state of play looks like this: The wallpaper and carpet came with the house. It is a bit of a killer, but I've gotten used to it and am leaving it well alone. The mana is a relic of my misspent youth and was intended to be temporary, but I really quite like it now. The LP12 is definitely more at home on the mana rather than the fraim. Footfall is a thing of the past unless I engage in some of my lumbering elephantine dancing. The Gato amp is a huge surprise. It is 250W into8 ohms and class D to boot, but musically is absolutely superb. I intended to move to a Devaliet, but am happy enough for now. An added bonus is that the Gato does not buzz and hum. Some of the Naim boxes were quite noisy to say the least. This LP matches the wallpaper quite well: The Aro is the only remaining bit of Naim kit I own. It has been a huge shift. Streaming is currently provided by a Simple Audio Roomplayer which is under the Radikal. I am waiting for an Auralic Aries to show up. I am told it will be here during the weekwhich will be good as the Simple Audio is not in the league of my old NDS. So I have gone from a multi-box active system to a passive rig with 3 boxes and a record deck. Do I miss the old rig? Yes, but not much really. Did I have lots of money left over? Not really due to reinvestment , largely because of these chaps: Another view: And one more for luck: Art Alnico 8s in walnut. Absolutely the best speakers I have ever owned, by a country mile. As the new place is bigger this is a dedicated listening room. So there is plenty of space for the vinyl to come out of hiding: My CDs are ripped to a Vortexbox and are in storage in various parts of the house. All I need at the moment is some more furniture as it is a bit of a fortress of solitude at the moment, with a single very comfy armchair only. I haven't been able to find a sofa to suit me yet.

  7. Hi all, I have an early LP12, which I have had for more than 20 years, though it was at least that old when I purchased it. Like many of its ilk, it has gone through changes over the years, initially, getting a late pre-cirkus bearing and subplatter along with new springs and grommets. It grumbled along for some time with a basik plus, having not had the coin to buy an ittok at the time. It has had a number of cartridge partners, spending most of its time with a couple of generations of AT-OC9's, though it has latterly found a VdH frog to pair with. The Basik plus left the building, replaced with a Jelco 750D, which was a clear improvement. Most recently, replaced the subchassis and bearing with a Kore and Cirkus, which has been a clear improvement, clearly tightening up the bass, and making balancing the springs easier. The motor and power supply is a valhalla, and despite having considered change this, I have not as yet. This is on the cards at some time in the medium term. As a result of all this action, I have a trove of LP12 bits'n'pieces, and a turntable on a classic plinth, which I am considering replacing. The plinth itself is very early- it is afromasia with fluting on all four sides, and no corner bracing. The corners are all tight, and plinth is not warped, though it is a couple of mm out of square, which you notice when the armband is in place. On the other side of the plinth, the top plate sits evenly and tightly. I am considering doing one of a number of things, and would appreciate the advice of the forum. Ideally I would like to get a new plinth. I have seen booplinths and Harban plinths, and whilst they look (and possibly sound) amazing, I am not sure that I want to sink my cash into one at the cost of upgrading the motor in the medium term. Is anyone else aware of other reasonable options out there? I have seen a number on ebay, though new linn options from the UK seem limited by geographic sales limitations, second hand options come up from time to time, though provenance and quality is a concern, and there is a maker in Barcelona, called woodoo plinths, which looks reasonable, though reviews are lacking. The other option I am considering is bracing my own plinth, though this is not my first choice, as I would prefer to have the parts to put together a second LP12 to sell, going towards a power supply upgrade. Please help me to narrow down my choice! Cheers and thanks. Justin

I dont have boxes for shipping. Extra Info: These were bought by me from Tivoli HiFi about 18 months ago. They are in as new condition and whilst they haven't been played much they have been in a smoke free environment. Lots of stellar reviews online including: "It's an attractive, affordable, well-made bookshelf speaker with a level of high-frequency reproduction that far exceeds everything near its price. Its only shortcomings are those that you'd expect from a speaker this small: limited low bass and overall dynamics. This LINN Majik DSM/1 also supports Space Optimisation and is upgradeable* to EXACT Link functionality. *to qualify for the EXACT LINK upgrade, a LINN Exactbox to qualify and then it will cost $1745 to upgrade +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Excerpts from What Hi-Fi review Don’t be fooled by its simple exterior; there’s a lot going on here. Inside that well-built, minimalist casing is a LINN Chakra 90W stereo amplifier, a music streamer, a phono stage (moving magnet as standard or moving coil as an option) and of course, digital-to-analogue conversion circuitry. Alongside the usual complement of stereo analogue, optical and coaxial sockets you’ll find a four-strong contingent of HDMI inputs and one HDMI output too. It means this system can be used to play back the sound of a Blu-ray player, games console or set-top box, while passing through the picture for your TV. Linn Majik DSM : music streaming Linn was an early convert to music streaming and its experience shines through in well-developed streaming apps, and the fuss free way everything just works. File compatibility is good and extends up to 24-bit/192kHz. So, start listening and the good news continues. This is a fast, detailed-sounding system that takes all kinds of recordings in its stride. It remains a hugely capable, forward-looking system that serves-up a large slice of hi-fi performance to those that would never usually consider going down the separates route. 11. Item: EOI Linn Sondek LP12 Serial Number 1348 built in 1974. Turntable is signed by Linn Founder and Executive Chairman Sir Ivor Tiefenbrun alongside the serial number and also on the internal side of the plinth in two places. The turntable holds a SME 3009 tone-arm (Serial number 241344) and had the Valhalla powerboard fitted in 1982. Overall condition is very good and is complete including the smoke tint lid, further photos are available on request over the weekend to those with a serious interest. Specific photographs can also be arranged as required. Please note the turntable has been dismantled and packaged for transport. This LP12 is easily one of the oldest ever made available for sale in Australia, Ivor personally helped me verify the signatures and researched the serial numbers from the deck, tone-arm and powerboard. He is aware of the turntable's existence, his signatures that adorn it and the reason it is being put up for sale. Accompanying the turntable and included as part of the sale is Ivor's signed personal business card. Sub 2000 serial number LP12's are nigh on impossible to find, having one signed by the company founder even rarer. This is truly one for the collector and you know this, that said it will be sold with all proceeds going towards Cancer Research, there is no personal gain to myself. Please read the "Reason for Selling" to understand why. Expressions of interest are sought via PM by serious buyers only, just to be clear a $2000 offer will not be seeing this turntable in your possession and it will be advertised on other sites - although has been listed here first, again this turntable will be sold, if you want it get in touch. Here is a link to the photos..... https://www.dropbox.com/sh/b8nhqbywws8nvk7/AABNaCw_HTYrxrDCmsANay33a?dl=0 Location: Perth, Western Australia Price: EOI $2500 Item Condition: Very good Overall Reason for selling: Again, all funds raised will be donated to Cancer Research via the Cancer Council of Australia - this is not for personal gain in any way. My brother and I lost our Mother aged 63 to Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2012, that was horrible....... but in 2014 his 3 year old son was diagnosed with Leukaemia and, well, it just couldn't get any worse. Thankfully It didn't, my nephew beat this god forsaken disease and has been in remission for the last couple of years. 40+ years ago (when this LP12 was built) Leukaemia was a death sentence and it has only been through research that kids now have a fighting chance, having hope is more important than anything else when you get that sort of news from a doctor. As a family our way of giving back is clear, as brothers we applied to be part of the Shitbox Rally for the 2019 run from Perth to Sydney. Fundraising is what it is all about and well we thought that rather than ask people for money we should sell items we owned but where not using. The absolute irony in all of this? I bought this turntable from an elderly customer of mine at Woof Dog Records, he approached me knowing I have a passion for analogue and I just had to have this special LP12, wasn't going to use it other than for display. After I paid him he told me the money was being used to fund his wife's medical treatment. The following week our application to be part of the 2019 Shitbox rally was approved, I had completely forgotten about the rally application at that time. I instantly knew that the best thing to do with this rare Linn was to help us raise as much money as we possibly can. This deck is only being sold so other parents, other families, other people get the chance to hang onto hope when their world crashes down with a cancer diagnosis. Research is hope. I have listened to some amazing audio systems over the years, intricate in detail, depth of sound to die for and clarity equal in purity to the worlds best diamonds. None, not one of these, will ever reproduce the sound of (nor have the impact of) being faced with a father doubled over in distress, weeping without control in the hallway of a children's oncology ward. His wife and their young child who had just been given weeks to live just couldn't see this proud man literally fall to the ground in absolute distress. That sound will always stick with me, that sound defies description, that sound is the sound of no hope, that sound is the reason this turntable is for sale. This Linn Sondek LP12 is going to help give someone hope one day, if you buy this you are making a difference to someone you probably don't know, someone who may not even be conceived yet! If sold through this forum a donation will also be made to the site in recognition and I guess just to say thanks for it being here. Thank you for reading this. Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD, EFTPOS or Direct Debit. To be discussed. Extra Info: A Dropbox file link with extensive photographs will be established over the weekend and made available to interested parties. Pictures:

Great bedroom/study unit. This unit's CD plays original and burned CD's without any issues. Comes complete with all accessories including the BFA connectors, manual, remote power cord. 14. Hi, I'm a new member with a set of IMF Super Compacts I've owned for round 30+ years! I'd appreciate some advice or tips from some perhaps more analytical audiophiles on a planned upgrade. I'm about to refurb the IMF's with new caps & tweeters (audax) i did the driver foams a few years ago. They have served well but Ive had mediocre receivers and in process of deciding on either replacing with 2nd hand gear: - a Linn Classik receiver - or a NAD AV receiver, any opinions on which will be best sound? Both units between 3-$400 The Linn has a cd player, my current cd player is an everyday pioneer and my dvd/blueray player is a LG with 500GB hard drive I play mix of acoustic guitar, rock, smooth jazz, opera , piano etc. In addition to refurb my IMFs and upgrading amplification I'm considering building a pair of IMF TLS50 or similar, I owned a pair of TLS50 copies for a week in Bris 35 years ago, in my ignorance I thought they were faulty because my Luxman receiver couldnt drive them so i sent them back to the seller - ongoing regrets - they were well made i just didnt understand that particular Luxman was a mediocre piece of gear. Anyhow, any recommendations' on which IMF models would suit the amps I'm looking at as a 2nd pair of spkrs in a surround sound setup? Thanks for your interest. John Nth Qld Australia
  15. Item: Linn Exotik analogue pre-amplifier with Dynamik PSU Location: Adelaide Price: $1050 Item Condition: Excellent except for a small dent in rear right corner of case (see photos) Reason for selling: Upgraded to Linn Exakt DSM Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal Extra Info: Silver Linn Exotik analogue pre-amp for sale (this is not the 'DA' version). Complete with new box from Linn, remote control and AU power plug (it is a standard IEC connector so any power lead will fit and the voltage is auto-selecting). This has been dealer fitted with the Linn Dynamik power supply, which provides a significant improvement to the sound. The pre-amp replaced a Kairn in my own system and was a big improvement with both Klouts and with 2250 power amps. The analogue circuitry in this pre-amp is identical to the later Linn Akurate Kontrol amp and has the same sound. In fact in my own comparisons to the current Akurate DSM there is only a very slight difference in the sound quality of analogue path. The pre-amp provides a 5.1 processor (with all required RCA connections), but is not the later DA digital version and does not have a phono stage. Please note that there is a small dent in the rear right corner (not visible in normal use), see photograph for the extent of this. The Exotik has been back to Linn in Scotland since this occurred (thus the new box). Pictures:

  18. Item: Linn Majik Isobarik in rosenut in superb condition with transit boxes etc, this is a copy of the original listing from the sna member -audio_file i purchased form last year. Location: Perth Price: $2800 + delivery costs if not picked up Item Condition: Excellent, apart from some minor marks on the base plate, and the one corner has a slight imperfection. (See pictures) Reason for selling: Moved towards a different colour and budget. Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Bank Transfer, PayPal ( plus costs) Extra Info: These go very deep and have low bass distortion due to the isobaric configuration. An omni-directional bass output makes the speaker less sensitive to placement. They would suit someone who wants a speaker for a larger room, or for both music and home theatre; you wouldn't need a sub woofer. They have the option to be upgraded either to active, or partially active. In partially active only the bass drivers are active, and could then be driven on a much smaller amplifier. In passive mode they can be quad amplified, with four separate binding posts per speaker. I have the original boxes and can ship, but they are heavy so you can pick them up yourself as well. I purchased for rear speakers for home theatre but due to ill health never set up and only used for maybe 15 minutes since i purchased. Information from Linn: http://small.linncdn.com/product-catalogue/documents/Linn_Majik_Isobarik_Product_Information.pdf They went for $8795 before they were discontinued last year. The following are the actual speakers, except for the one with the side cut open.
  19. Item: Vintage ERA-3033 turntable, 1975 Location: Chisholm 2322 NSW Price: $550 Item Condition: As new Reason for selling: Too many turntables! Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: Will ship for $40. Yes, I know how to pack a tt! This is a really super “as new” turntable from high end audio French manufacturer, ERA. (Etudes et Recherches Acoustiques, or Acoustic Studies & Research, located in Paris) This mid-70s ERA5055 model is a high-quality turntable for serious audiophiles that was pitched directly against brands like Linn and Thorens. While cheaper than Linn, prices were on par with Thorens. Their selling points were: · Cast alloy suspended baseplate. The baseplate supports the platter together with the tonearm and cueing mechanism is similar to that of Linn and Thorens models, except that ERA used cast alloy instead of pressed steel, which was a far more elegant very French approach. There is a single shipping screw to lock down the baseplate during transport. · The bearing is a captive ball bearing in a silicon bronze sleeve pressed into the alloy shaft that is integral with the cast suspended baseplate. This design keeps the spindle absolutely aligned with the baseplate and it cannot move out of alignment. There is no play in the bearing. · The platter is a weighty two-piece system with the sub-platter driven by a 4mm wide belt, same size as Thorens TD160 etc, so easy to replace. · Motor drive is the superbly reliable and accurate 48-pole synchronous motor running at a slow 250rpm, the same motor used by Linn. It is switched to run on 110V and 240V. Motor made in Holland. · Drive pulley is stainless steel, not plastic. · Suspension is by Silentbloc, ie. damped spring system. The suspension has been re-adjusted as part of its service. · Two speeds, 45 and 33 · Tonearm is a gimbal type low-mass with a built in anti-skate dial at the base and height adjustable. · VTF (Vertical Tracking Force) is adjusted with a single weight on the rear of the tonearm and then fine adjusted with a Vernier slider weight. Points to note: · This machine has been in storage for a number of years. It has been cleaned and serviced so that it now looks and runs just as well as did in the 70s. There is zero corrosion inside and out. In fact, it looks as if it rolled off the assembly line yesterday! · The deck is 2.5mm coated steel plate, so very stiff and solid. · The suspended baseplate is 3-pronged, stiff cast alloy. · Belt: Belt has been replaced. · Supplied with a small container of 10W30 spec full synthetic oil for the bearing and spindle. Will need oiling before use as I’ve cleaned out the sleeve and spindle for transport. · Cartridge: No cartridge, but can install and align brand new Ortofon OM10 for extra $60. · The Plexiglas lid is in “as new” condition, unmarked and shiny. The hinges have removable pins to facilitate removal if you prefer to play records with the lid off. Pins not needed to articulate, only if you want a permanent install. · Power cord is audio RCA plugs and wires are as-new. Power plug is Euro 2-pin so will supply adapter. · Platter mat and its metal centre disk is in as-new condition · Speed has been checked and is perfect. I measured 33.33 and 45.1RPM, so you can’t better that! · Controls: There are 2 controls. 1. Speed selector LHS; 3. Combined Start/Cueing lever RHS. Like most high-end audiophile-quality tables, this one is manual apart from auto-off at the end of the recordwhen the stylus enters the run-out groove. Everything works as it should and it sounds truly excellent. There are no plastic components in the ERA, just all metal construction and mounted in a nice wooden plinth which is in as-new condition. All components in the ERA are serviceable. The wooden plinth has been given a light wipe over with furniture oil and it looks simply stunning. As the French would say “Superb!” Pictures:

Item: ERA 5055 Location: Maitland, NSW Price: $750 Item Condition: New, unused Reason for selling: Surplus to needs Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, Bank deposit Extra Info: This mid-70s ERA 5055 turntable model is a high end turntable for serious audiophiles that was pitched directly against brands like Linn and Thorens · Cast alloy suspended baseplate. There is a single shipping screw to lock down the baseplate during transport. · The bearing is a captive ball bearing in a silicon bronze sleeve pressed into the alloy shaft that is integral with the cast suspended baseplate. As the turntable is unused, the bearing and spindle’s tolerances are as per factory. · The platter is a weighty two-piece system with the sub-platter driven by a 4mm wide belt. · Motor drive is a superbly reliable and accurate 48-pole synchronous motor running at a slow 250rpm, the same motor used by Linn at the time. It is switched to run on 110V and 240V. · Suspension is by Silentbloc, ie. damped spring system. The suspension has been retuned as part of its service. · Two speeds, 45 and 33 · Tonearm is totally unique and was called “Frictionless Pivot” by ERA. It is suspended by four high tensile springs that can be adjusted to set VTA. (Vertical Tracking Angle). It is an almost frictionless design that doesn’t suffer the issues of gimble wear and adjustment. · Anti-skate is via an adjustable weight that hangs off a magnetic repositionable post. · VTF (Vertical Tracking Force) is adjusted with a single weight on the rear of the tonearm and then fine adjusted with a sliding weight on the arm, which has scale markings etched on it. · Belt: A brand new belt has been installed. · Oil: Supplied with a small container of the full synthetic oil for the bearing and spindle. Will need oiling before use as I’ve cleaned out the sleeve and spindle for transport. · Cartridge/stylus: ERA turntables were not sold with a cartridge, so it comes without one. You can either install your favourite cartridge or else opt to purchase a brand new Ortofon OM10 cartridge for an additional $60. · The Plexiglas lid is in “as new” condition. The hinges have removable pins to facilitate removal if you prefer to play records with the lid off. However, if you install the captive pins, the lid will stay upright when playing records. · Power cord is audio RCA plugs and wires are as-new. · Platter mat and metal centre disk is in as-new condition · Speed has been checked and is perfect. I measured 33.33 and 45.1RPM, so you can’t better that! · Controls: There are 3 controls. 1. On-off push/pull switch located left rear; 2. Speed selector LHS; 3. Cueing lever RHS. · Like most high end audiophile-quality tables, this one is manual. There are no mechanicals to mess with the tonearm’s free movement. · User manual is in French and English This tt is very tweakable, being designed along the lines of Linn, Thorens etc. The cartridge shown in the photos is a Rega Carbon and used for testing only using a test headshell. No cartridge is included in this sale unless one is ordered as an optional extra. The alloy headshell that comes with this machine is brand new, unused, and the wires are in as-new condition. As this is a vintage old-stock item, there is no warranty and no-return. Pick up and demo available in Maitland area for serious buyers. Expert packing and shipping by courier to your door is available to Australia for $45. Pictures:
