  1. For our June club meeting we are very pleased to have the exceptionally musical Harbeth Monitor 40.2 speakers, courtesy of Cameron Pope of Krispy Audio (https://krispyaudio.com.au/). Unfortunately Cameron cannot attend on the day due to other commitments. For our first half, we will have two separate music sessions where two members will play up to 25 minutes of music of their choice. These “Member Music Sessions” (as we call them) prove to be very enjoyable, interesting and often surprizing. Details of the system… Speakers: Harbeth Monitor 40.2 speakers. 11. interested in getting some opinions So I am looking to upgrade my front speakers to get a bit more enjoyment from 2 channel music. (I have a range of musical tastes - not big on dixieland jazz or zydeco) I really plan on trying to listen to as much as I can, but I am eyeing a set of VAF i66mk2's - would like to get some views on how they might compare to speakers like the ATC SCM40's or Harbeth HL5's. I am unlikely to be able to audition the i66's, but I have owned a pair of DC-X speakers many years ago, and was pretty fond of them. Happy to get other options - the i66's are probably the limit of how big I want to go
  12. Item: Accuphase A70; Accuphase A36; Accuphase C2820; Accuphase DP560; Harbeth SHL5 Plus with Skylan Speaker Stands Location: Melbourne Price: A70 - AUD14500 (Power Amp) A36 - AUD4800 (Power Amp) --> AUD4300 C2820 - AUD10500 (Pre Amp) --> AUD9800 DP560 - AUD8500 (SACD Player + USB DAC) --> 8000 Harbeth SHL5 Plus with Skylan Speaker Stands - AUD5200 (Speakers...) Item Condition: All items looks and works great in excellent condition with all the original packaging boxes and accessories (except Skylan speaker stands there is no original packaging for them). Has been keeping them in a listening room which only myself has access to it (I got a 2 years old kid and that's why I would never put any of the gears in the living room for the time being). Reason for selling: I don't really have a lot of time using them and my listening room is too small to utilise them actually. There are other much bigger commitments in life and the money should help to ease the pressure a bit for my future moving plan. Not that I won't miss the sound but I think one need to make a choice at some point. I won't give up this hobby and if really sold will go for a much simpler setup. You can also see that I have been "cleaning house" to sell all the unused / no longer needed gears (e.g. headphones, DAC, DAP, etc). Reckon I have been crazy and should be more cautious in spending. Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, Bank Cheque (all payment service fees (if any) and shipping to be paid by buyer, actually I would prefer to trade in person if possible) Extra Info: Most Accuphase gears were brought over from my home country when I moved to here around 2.5 years ago. I hadn't unpacked any of them only after I arrived for 1 year. DP560 was bought last year in Hong Kong. Harbeth SHL5 Plus with Skylan speaker stands were bought from Krispy Audio (which were sold to me as a brand new demo pair) 1 year ago. Will donate to the SNA forum for sure if sold. Pictures:
  13. Melody Valve Ltd 8pm Wednesday 21st March, visitors welcome. Willis Room, City of Whitehorse Offices Maroondah Highway (Whitehorse Road), Nunawading Melway Map 48 Ref G9 Contact: 9437 1249 2016 was a landmark year for Melbourne audiophiles, for it was a year when two International Hi Fi Shows came to town. Not only was it a first time for the StereoNet group to organise a very successful show, it was a first for Melody Valve Ltd to exhibit all of their new amplifiers. This month we are very lucky to have Melody present at the club. Established in Melbourne by the founder and chief designer Mr Allen Wang, the company has grown by investing in their own factory in Shenzhen China. It features a modern assembly line, a transformer production line, a vacuum processing plant and a variety of self-built high-end testing equipment. Their current line of amplifiers consists of eight models. Melody will be demonstrating two systems from their Everest amplifier range. The equipment will consist of a 28watt Class A Integrated amplifier, and a Pre/ Power combination. The first model the "Everest 845", uses a Western Electric 845 tube per channel, as well as a pair of 300B driver tubes. The second system will be a pair of mono blocks - "PM 845 EVO" -- each running a pair of 845 valves in Class A mode with a combined output of 70 watts each. The "WE2688 Signature Pre", is a real highlight with its implementation of a WE 416 tube; planar triode, used for microwave telephone systems, that looks like a round metal relay. The two systems will use the same pair of speakers, the Harbeth 40.2. This reference monitor is a 3-way stand mount model that houses a 12" Bass driver with 6.5" Mid and matching 1" Tweeter. Harpeth's top of the range speaker is modified for the domestic audio market with a different bass driver, but still retains the same mid that is used in their studio monitors. If you haven't experienced Melody's presentations at the past Hi Fi Shows, you will see why they get the award for "Exhibitor who tried the hardest to impress". Sounds like we're in for a sonic spectacular. Nick Karayanis Program Co-ordinator Ken Tripp Wise and Wonderful Webmaster Melbourne Audio Club, Inc. http://www.melbourneaudioclub.org.au

Stereo Sound, Japan "Highly Commended" ? Hi-Fi News "5*" ? What Hi-Fi? Whatever you ask of the Compact 7ES-3, it always delivers: perfectly. The clarity is spellbinding and brings the magic carpet ride experience to the listening room in a medium-sized enclosure. The legendary multi-award winning medium-sized Harbeth HL Compact 7ES-3 takes the ultra-clean Harbeth cone technology to another performance level, combining natural sound with a flair for reproducing any and every type of music. The Harbeth secret for natural sound is the result of the meticulous attention to detail. Critically important, but hidden, is the crossover, which carefully integrates the drive units across a wider horizontal and vertical arc. Consequently, the Compact 7ES-3 is far less critical of stand height than many speakers of this size. Pictures:
  17. Item: Harbeth M30.1 Tiger Ebony Speakers Location: Melbourne Price: $4000 + Shipping Item Condition: Great (had been using them in Hong Kong for around 6 months and only unpacked them yesterday here in Australia) Reason for selling: Want to switch to SHL5 Plus as I want more bass Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: I don't have the original boxes anymore and they are shipped from Hong Kong to Australia through a custom made box with a lot of care to ensure no damages. I still have the user manual / certificate to prove it is genuine. You may found it funny I don't have a proper speaker stand for them in the picture and that is because I was using a custom tv cabinet as the the speaker stand back in Hong Kong and so I didn't buy the matching speaking stands. P.S.: I shall have much more items to sell here as I just finish unpacking my boxes. I was really a crazy guy buying lots of stuff before I moved to here and most of them are even brand new unused. As I shall be utilising this forum for selling, will donate to StereoNet after deal closed.
  18. Just a very few years back I bought a pair of near-mint, not-very-old, 2nd-hand SHL5 speakers (via SNA - 35th Anniversary I think) after I had spent about 3 years reading wall-to-wall, worldwide, glowing reviews. Including in Steronet forums. They were bought blind, as it is impossible to audition this sort of stuff down here in Tas. To my immense (and ongoing / unresolved) surprise, I was disappointed within seconds - and it never got any better; even with a range of amplifiers, including valve. Compared to my (then) Martin Logans, the Harbeths seemed somehow slightly thick, congested, a tad unnatural on vocals, & a bit confused. Nice on full-blown orchestral stuff, but for my mostly spare, lean taste in music, the best I could say about them was that they were 'ordinary'. They lasted about 2 weeks. Fortunately, the chap who purchased them (also SNA if I recall correctly) was delighted with them. So I figured it must be me - an anachronistic olde farte. Other well-regarded transducers have also left me less than thrilled. [ Confession:- I have auditioned over 80 pairs of speakers in my lounge over the last 10 years - 'tis a sorta retirement hobby - so am therefore not a speaker virgin.] It was only later (isn't it always thus) I discovered that I was not absolutely alone in my rogue SHL5 opinion;- very, very rarely, other buffs had similar thoughts with at least one chap describing their sonic signature as being 'veiled'. Then subsequently, an experienced user whose opinions I value but who shall remain anonymous herein.... - and who has been lucky enough to try the P3ESR, Monitor 30.1 and the SHL5 - told me that he too found the SHL5 disappointing and much preferred the 30.1. [Later on, I did in fact acquire a pair of the tiny P3ESR for myself and loved them to bits. Lacking bass as expected, but heaps of life and character - a very engaging speaker.] To top off my confusion totally, my long-term and current speakers are old Spendor BC1s - which I think are excellent on all music. But which are, more or less in design terms, a very, very similar British, 2 cubic foot, thin-walled, lossy box to the Harbeth SHL5. All of which is a long-winded way of leading up to the following...... The BC1s are very long in the tooth now and I feel the urge to repace them with something new similar in size; I still can't work out went wrong with the SHL5s, but I can't help it - I still fancy the Harbeth oeuvre. I simply can't afford the 40.2. Has anyone had an opportunity to audition a pair of the new SHL5+ 40th Anniversary?
  19. Item: Harbeth Super HL5+ in cherry with matching Skylan standsLocation: BerowraPrice: $6,890Item Condition: As newPayment Method: AnyExtra Info: Somehow (long story) I've ended up with 2 pairs of HL5 demo speakers so for space reasons, one has to go. They have been out of the box for photos and been played for one demo only. They are therefore presented as new with no marks, scratches, they're mint. I'm throwing in a pair of Skylan speaker stands as pictured, which would retail at approx $1,200.

  21. The November 2015 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again gather for an afternoon of fine music, great sound and amicable company. Each month, the Sydney Audio Club presents the finest in high end audio systems for our members and guests. It's a bit like a private audio show once a month where you can hear and discuss equipment that you might not otherwise have the chance to audition. And you can bring along your own music to test the capabilities of the system or to just share with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. For our last club meeting of the calendar year, Cameron Pope of Krispy Audio (http://www.krispyaudio.com.au/pages/About-Us.html) will be presenting. Cameron has presented to the Sydney Audio Club a couple of times before, each time bringing in a totally different and great system. This time he’s bringing in another impressive system based on Harbeth speakers – their first appearance in the club. Details of the system…. 22. Hi all - I've started the process of determining replacements for my Acoustic Energy AE3s (3-way studio monitor style) - i feel they are a little lacking in midrange clarity and their upper-mid bass is a little too much at times. My main criteria for selection are (in descending importance): musicality, smooth top end, a big - preferably wide and high - soundstage, easy ability to follow whatever instrument is present in a particular recording. I mainly play vinyl (Michel Gyrodec/SME 309/Micro Benz Glider SL, Lehmann Black Cube twin phono pre) and have a preamp/processor (EAD) with a Bryston 9Bst power amp so would be using them for HT duties as well. On my shortlist are Magneplanars, Lenehan ML-3s and Harbeth Super HL-5s. Budget is max $7k. I loved the Magneplanar MG 1.7s but for space reasons will be looking at the MG12/QR and MMGs and will be auditioning these soon. I've not heard the Lenehan ML2s or ML-3s but they seem promising and hope to hear them in the coming months. However, I've read great things about the Harbeth Super HL5s - particularly their musicality. From what it appears, many that end up with a pair tend to jump off the upgrade wagon - a very appealing idea for me. I know that a few SNAers are rather fond of them as well. My question is this - while many speak glowingly (and almost reverentially) about their performance with jazz and classical, how do they fare with classic rock, new wave and electronic music - eg Police, Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, Cars, Jean Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk, etc? Do they deliver the goods (subject to room interactions and dimensions of course)? Opinions gratefully received.
