  1. I don't think we seem to have an owners thread for focal here ? calling all focal owners or just lovers of focals ... to share the love of Focal... I fell in love with focal....unexpectedly ....about 12 years ago...at a dealer gtg where just happened to hear the lovely focal utopia Divas... and as they say all else is history... before I knew it was demoing them at home and convincing the wife these were the speakers for life I have to be honest I never ever prior to that have ever given them a 2nd thought, seen pictures thought a bit odd ball looking. but in person and in hearing they are something that had me ... what is it about focal ? its their vocals.... yes rhymes truly its the warmth of their vocals and their rendition... that is simply captivating for me ... then there is the delicacy of the top end (which if not partnered well with the room can be out of sorts) similarly the grip on the bottom end and fullness of it that can also be over done with not the right partnering and room and siting. anyways these are my beauties.. in the lovely focal utopia Divas... which soon spread to including a Focal centre speaker and then before you know it to a full focal 7.1.5 setup with focals all around including up in the ceiling and then even spread to the bedroom setup... yep I got it bad... but its thats been the way for a few years so not a passing fancy... hey I've even got some focal music ... sounds fantastic by the way https://www.discogs.com/Various-Focal-The-Spirit-Of-Sound-Vol-5/release/479173 so any other lovers of focal out there ? come share the love some pics how you are using yours what you enjoy about them ? ps I have a very important tip for focal speakers especially those with the W cone mid range / woofer that my above two speakers have .... will share when get a chance ....

  3. I thought I would share some of my extremely amateur pictures and videos from the recent Bangkok Audio Video show. Apologies for the quality but it is all just recorded poorly on my phone but something is better than nothing right? There is a really good scene here in Thailand for high end gear and some really good retailers. It has exceeded my expectations of what is here and surpases Aus in some respects. Anyways here is a few pics and vids and I will try to talk about each a little. The rooms at the show were really well sized and a lot better than in videos we see from the states etc (not just hotel bedrooms). The rooms where all conference rooms and decently sized for the majority. My favourite room roughly 8x14x3.5m Equipment is Proac Response K8, Rel No.25 array @Sime, Acoustic Arts Mono 3 Amps, The Beast server and an Audioquest Niagara. TT was unfortunately not used. (The speakers were meant to be the new top Elac Concentro but they unfortunately weren't there. The Proacs were very impressive regardless) This system was incredible and was demo'd by a Rel representative who did comparisons of sub vs no sub, 2 sub vs 6 sub array. The sound with no subs was seriously good but with the array was something else. It gave the feel of a live concert with the benefits of a HIFI system. It was never over powering at low volumes 60dB or at over 100dB and made it so much better at either volume level too. The subs filled in effect and made it so much more appealing, natural with a soundstage that was just amazing. They really transformed it into something other-worldly. My next project at home is to integrate my SVS into my system and after this it is a must. I will be buying a second if anyone is considering selling theirs though I wish I could afford the Rel array........ It was great speaking with the Rel guy alone and picking his brain. I have videos I will attach at the end of this post. Next is a room roughly the same as above though with no room treatment whatsoever. Equipment is Focal Grand Utopia 3 (roughly $260k AUD), Esoteric Grandioso stack with Fidelizer server, VTL Siegfried Series 2 monos and TL7.5 pre, Entreq Tellus 2 and more, In the pic is Stirling Trayle who did a talk on system optimisation and another on speaker positioning. The speaker positioning was really good and gave a scientific method rather than just constantly shuffling in semi bling hope. The optimization was good too. The sound of this system was of course amazing especially at higher volumes. At lower it was just so different to the Proac Rel room. It was what you would expect from a >500k system though and was something very special. Stirling travels the world setting up peoples speakers and believes in minimal room treatment after the speakers have been positioned. Got to speak with Stirling for quite a while and learnt quite a bit. The loom with more Entreq This room was about 6x5 with a lot of room treatment including little timber dots everywhere EDIT...Wilson Alexia with some Serbian Nat amps with valves as big as a football, Bergmann Galder TT This was a really nice room but didn't grab me. This next room was roughly 7x9 and had both a Wilson and Avantgarde setup EDIT...Wilson Alexia, D'Agostino Progression, dCS Rossini and Fidelizer server. This was incredible and from memory the monoblocks are a decent step up from the system presented at Audio Connection for their dCS launch which had the same DAC/clock, speakers were Sasha and used the Momentum integrated. I just wish this had it's own room because it was amazing. The other in this room was Avantgarde Duo Mezzo XD and Cary CAD 805AE it was beautiful though played a lot of music that wasn't really my taste and I don't think it was the best recordings. Classical on the Focal Grand Utopias gave me goosebumps but this didn't. Another good room Cessaro Alpha 2, Ayon S10 and Vulcan Evo amps. This was really lovely and the Cessaro rep enjoyed having someone to speak English with. The speakers use TAD drivers and were really special to listen to. He said there is a pair in Sydney and he travels to every customers house to set them up. Bad pic sorry Tannoy Westminster Royal SE and Kengsington GR, Sun Audio and Esoteric Sounded good but didn't grab me. ML ESL 15A and Burmester 911 MK3 This was really really nice and I think the ARC did really well. Burmester amps have always sounded really good everytime I hear them This room had black Focal Sopra 2s. Red Sopra 3s and Orange Sopra 1s (not shown) I was amazed at how the little naim all in one sounded on the Sopra 2s and would happily live with this system. The Micromega all in one amps were pretty crappy on all 3 sets of speakers. The Naim stack with Sopra 3 was beautiful and the best attainable system (for most) that I heard there. Naim really is incredible. 7.3 Elac Unifi, 3x Rel 2 12/SE Rotel RA1580 and 2x RMB-1585 This was pretty cool and I think the Rotel processor is brilliant. A few other systems Stealth 25th Anniversary Karp Horns. Claiming to be the best home theatre speakers in the world. These Daniel Hertz M7 were pretty good. Unsure... There were some other really good systems especially a Stenheim and Vitus room though I don't have pics. A locally made 300b amp for $800 AUD was absolutely beautiful with his own homemade speakers for roughly $3000 AUD One room had Magico bookshelves but he didn't want to set them up same goes with Avantgarde Zero1s The new Paradigm Persona Bookshelves sounded pretty average but had a little amp and not a good space It was a good show with a decent turn out and I was very impressed with the room sizes. I think all shows should try to use conference rooms and not tiny little hotel bedrooms. I'll try to add some videos soon EDITED.. Wilson speakers are Alexia not Sasha S2

  5. Item: Focal Aria 948 Floorstanding Speakers Location: Len Wallis Audio, HQ Price: $3500 Item Condition: Excellent Secondhand Condition Payment Method: Credit Cards, Cash, Paypal, Bank Transfer, ZipPay Extra Info: Simply stunning, just traded Focal Aria 948 Floorstanders in High Gloss Black. These speakers are the current model and brand new retail for $6000! Shipping: Anywhere in the land of OZ, POA Focal say: The Aria 948 loudspeaker symbolises the return of the 'true' acoustic loudspeaker. A new type of 3-way loudspeaker with 81/4’’ (21cm) speaker drivers effortlessly providing intense and controlled bass. The intention was a return to the very essence of acoustics for those who are passionate about music. 'Flax' cones are characterized by their natural sound, with low coloration, their richness of reproduction in the midrange register and their tighter bass. The result is a more homogeneous sound, improved dynamics. Photos:
  6. Item: Focal JM Lab Electra 905 Speakers Location: SYD - Hurlstone Park 2193 Price: $400 obo, donation to SNA on sale Item Condition: good for age, functionally/drivers very good, cabs have a few mark, swirls, scratches etc. Grills have no holes or tears, one has been glued on one top corner by a previous owner (one of the pegs came out of the particle board frame). Firm and fine fit for the grills though. Reason for selling: Was holding on to them for a second system, but need to clear space for upcoming house renovations. Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, PayPal friend Extra Info: Great speakers, well reviewed and regarded. Awesome for this price and are still giving many a current offering in the up to 2k new range a run for their money. Great mids and highs, fantastic tweeters. Good detail and clarity. If you are listening to bass heavy music a sub is needed. These are pick-up only, either from my place at Hurlstone Park (2193) or Lane Cove West or St Mary's on a work day if arranged prior. Happy to drop off within the Sydney Metro area if pre-paid at the asking price. Function test on pick-up is fine, no lengthy auditions at this price point though. Many thanks, Ralf Reviews/Opinions: http://www.audioreview.com/product/speakers/floorstanding-speakers/focal/electra-905.html Photos: Advertisements without photos of the actual item will not be approved.

Extra Info: These just traded Focal Chorus 816's sound fantastic, pasted our tests and would serve you well. We take some points off these and reduce the condition to 'good' because there are some surface blemishes which we have pictured below. So be aware the cabinet finish is not perfect but would respond well to a little TLC to get them looking 100% again. Shipping: Yes we do, just ask for a rate to your star system Pictures:
  9. Item: focal electra 1038be Location: campsie Price: $ 7500 firm Item Condition: Reason for selling: Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: like new paid 9700$ from westcoast hifi 4 months ago and will take a 2.2 k hit . i tried selling in first month but tried to make them work in my room. Fail alot of people on sna know this system and it is very modest. But the speakers do not do the job i require from it because as you can see my room is horible . I will use this cash to buy small bookshelf speakers. My frustrations with this ridiculous room is making me sell speakers i don't even want to sell. The bass on my concrete walls are imposible tp get true low end resolution. This is a very sad and hard sale. This speaker has warranty if speakers were to fail etc.. It has all spikes and boxes. These speakers had 500 hours logged before i bought. They were for demo in shop purposes. If you want to offer lower than my price please stop and look somewhere else. I'm not really in the mood tbh. Just remember, there's a reason these speakers have a near 16k rrp originally. Thanks Pictures:

  17. Item: Fostex TH900 MK2 with Lawton Level 1 Mod Location:ACT Price: 1150 AUD+Postage Item Condition: Mint, No Scratch, No Paint drpp, Pads are in perfect condition, with all accessories and Fosted headphone stand Reason for selling: Funding for Stax 009 System Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: As you know, I have a collection of flagship headphones, but after listening Stax 009 system, I decide to Build one. (My collection includes Focal clear(sold), Sennheiser HD800(Sold), Sennheiser HD800S(Borrowed to my best hifi friend),Beyer T1(my first hifi headphones, not going to sell them),Hifiman HE1000V2(Borrowed to my Best friend) and Fostex TH900 MK2). HD800s and HEKV2 will be posted for sale once my friend finishes his listening. For the TH900 MK2, High frequency is gorgeous, great for string music. With Lawton Level 1 mod installed($135 USD), mid range is richer and clearer, bass is always one of the best in dynamic headphones below 2500aud range. The 50mm bio-dynamic diaphragm offers even slightly better resolution than HD800 series(in serious listening comparison under same system). Soundstage is no doubt the best in closed back headphones and it sounds just like open back headphones. Bigger than Focal clear, like 75% of HD800 in terms of width. Easier to Drive than most flagships, performs pretty good in my A&K 240 portable player. My verdict: TH900 with Lawton mod stands comfortably in the same class of HD800s. It shines for music types like string music, pop, OST,ACG and female vocal while mainteins flag ship level performance in other types including symphonies. Pictures:

  20. Item: FOCAL MINI UTOPIA SPEAKERS (piano gloss) Location: MELBOURNE PRICE: $3500 (FIRM, over $12K when new) Item Condition: GOOD Reason for selling: UPGRADING Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, EFT, (Paypal add 3%) Extra Info: I am parting with my Focal Mini Utopias; arguably one of the finest standmounds ever made. Had them since new and have never really ceased to be mesmerised by their astounding musicality. That's why my 'incurable upgrade itch' turned out to be quite a challenging and prolong exercise which involved more than a year (make it now 2!) of extensive auditioning of a number of highly acclaimed speakers (many in excess of $20 K). The speakers are in good condition cosmetically (few small marks here and there, really only noticeable upon close inspection) and are absolutely perfect functionally. The matching Focal stands are included. (Have original boxes but would still need to confirm their actual condition if of relevance to the buyer) NOTE: As some members may recall I am here re-listing this item after having having it earlier withdrawn from sale. I have received numerous enquiries/offers, many from interstate. However I will give preference to a local pick up unless the purchaser is willing to organise and cover ALL the logistics associated with packaging and the insured shipping at his/her own risk. Happy to answer any relevant questions via PM. Richard

  23. Item: JM Lab/Focal Mini Utopia (date of manufacture: 1998) Location: Western Sydney (pick up only) Price: $1990 (over $12K when new with stands ) Item Condition: very good except for minor deterioration of foam around tweeters (see pictures), does not affect sound quality Reason for selling: After 19 years, an upgrade is surely well overdue (to Dynaudio C2 Platinums) Payment Method: Cash on Pickup, Paypal (3% surcharge), Bank Transfer Purchased from Len Wallis Audio back in 1999. Many people still prefer this generation of Focal tioxid tweeter to their current metal dome tweeters. At 91.5dB, they are of above average sensitivity. The overall voicing of these speakers is a little on the richer, warmer, laid-back side of neutral and are particularly good with vocals. At this price these high-end bookshelf speakers represent quite a bargain, so be quick. Sorry, I prefer to avoid the hassle of inter-state shipping. No flippers, please. The piano gloss fronts with Anigré cabinets are in excellent condition save the usual minor scratches barely visible to the naked eye. Design: Two-way bass reflex speaker design in D’Appolito MTM array. Weight: around 26.5kg each Dimensions: 61 x 40 x 25cm (H x W x D) 2 x 6.5" Focal woofers (JM Lab is the maker of Focal drive units) in an MTM configuration around a 1" inverted dome Focal tioxid tweeter Frequency response: 50Hz to 25kHz +/- 3dB. Efficiency: 91.5dB (2.83V/1M) Nominal impedance: 8 ohms (not dipping below 4 ohms) Real-wood side panels made of Anigré, a dark-blonde African hardwood to strengthen the cabinet walls. A Soundstage review: https://www.soundstage.com/revequip/jmlab_mini_utopia.htm The measurements are all quite exceptional: https://www.soundstage.com/measurements/jmlab_miniutopia/ Previous SNA listing: Pictures:
