  1. After about a year of use, my second hand Marantz SR-96 has been outputting a distorted audio signal out of the left channel. I know it's not the speakers or the speaker cable because it distorts when head phones are plugged in as well; It also distorts all the inputs. Does anyone know what the problem is? If/how I can prevent it from happening any longer? Cheers
  2. My TT setup has had a 12 month hiatus but as soon as I've got it back in action I'm getting excessive distortion. I've never had any problem with distortion before - that I've noticed. The issue is most noticeable within treble section of the recording. It can be present across the whole album but has been most extreme at the outer grooves on a few albums but not others. Inner grooves are also worst than middle section. Generally speaking the severity is inconsistent but some distortion is present more often that not regardless of album (new or old). I can't put what I am experiencing to the cut or age of the album, or cart alignment. I'd appreciate some advice on what else to look for as all the discussion I've found seems to focus on these aspects. Here is a bit more background: Set-up comprises a Technic 1200 Mk5 /Jelco SA-750D with a Shuggie's collar / Dynavector 10X5 / Dynavector P75 Mk3 - stylus has not had excessive use and is properly cleaned Cart alignment is using Baerwald (SA-750D) alignment on an Accutrak protractor - along the arc the overhang looks good - maybe sits a smidgen past the arc on the outside edge Alignment at null points also seem fine, and I have rechecked VTF and anti-skate which are both set to 2 which is mid-point of recommended range for the 10X5. During its hiatus the TT has remained insitu - the headshell / cart was detached and stored carefully while a dummy headshell was attached to the arm. The phono stage was turned off. Getting the TT active again has involved a new IC between phono stage and amp, built by a reputable SNA member There has also been a speaker change since the TT was rested but no issues with the speakers or other system playback.
  3. Hi all, I'm having an issue with my surround amp (Denon AVC-A1. Must be almost 20yrs old but still sounds fantastic). Hoping someone might be able to provide some guidance! What happens? There is noticeable distortion coming from the rear right channel in any surround mode What have I tried? Occurs in all selected surround modes (DTS, DD, Dolby Pro Logic, etc..., with THX or not) Does not occur when using any 2 channel modes Amp is 7.1. I've tried using surround sets 1 & 2 outputs for 5.1 mode, and the issue occurs regardless and still only in the rear right channel Does anyone have insight into where the issue might come from? Or other scenarios I can test to figure it out? I'm thinking it's an issue with processing given it continues to occur only in the rear right channel regardless of how I configure the amp. Thoughts are appreciated! Cheers, Mike
  4. Hi All, I was listening to a new set of Focal Chorus 826v speakers I received from another member and I noticed a slight crackling from the bottom cone on certain frequencies. Putting my ear near the speaker I realised it was constant but just more noticeable at certain frequencies, I swapped them around to rule out cables / channels from amp but it followed the speaker. I then played a frequency track which starts at 2000 down to 0 and I found its not just the bottom cone but the trebble tweeter also has issues at certain frequencies. Is it possible the crossover has been damaged or the cables in transit?? I have attached the audio from the test recorded of my mobile so it's not the best and even the "good" speaker has a slight issue in the recording but I think that's from me moving slightly. You can hear in the bad speaker recording the tweeter suddenly doesn't sound right and then when it fades away the bottom cones vibrating / crackling. 5. Thought I'd post this separate thread as a heads up to anyone considering the new re-mastered & re-issued vinyl of Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy (HOTH). There has been quite a lot of reports and discussion of the US release containing fairly considerable distortion on "The Ocean" final track side 2. Not just from the Steve Hoffman crowd, but also on Amazon, Discogs etc. The EU release does not have this problem. I was aware of this so did my best to ID the EU release before buying locally here at Dada in Perth. Mine sounds great! The tricky part is that both the US and EU releases are pressed in Germany at different plants, both say "Manufactured in Germany" on the disc label. So I have taken photos of my EU copy and loaded to Discogs to make identification easier externally and internally. Look for the small font number on front under the barcode and on the rear Obi strap, the good EU = 8122796573 I would beware buying this vinyl online, particulary from US based retailers. Buy local for peace of mind ;-) Good EU 8122796573 http://www.discogs.com/Led-Zeppelin-Houses-Of-The-Holy/release/6224441 Debated US R1-535344 http://www.discogs.com/Led-Zeppelin-Houses-Of-The-Holy/release/6246973
  6. Just trolling around and found this article. http://people.xiph.org/~xiphmont/demo/neil-young.html "Unfortunately, there is no point to distributing music in 24-bit/192kHz format. Its playback fidelity is slightly inferior to 16/44.1 or 16/48, and it takes up 6 times the space." Something about ultrasonics of 192khz format creating more distortion than 44.1 or 48. Discuss.
  7. Hi guys Have my new turntable system all set up now and am having a great time spinning away. Having some slight trouble with some of my vinyls. Some of my vinyls have a distortion issue, especially with vocals on 's, f, th' sounds and some bass drum hits. It is not the system as other vinyls work fantastic and sound perfect, so I assume it's just an issue with those certain vinyls. They are brand new modern pressings of recent albums. So I am just wondering what steps I should take to help this issue or if it's just a bad pressing or something. Thanks.
