  1. **WARNING - Non Directional Rantings ahead** Part One: Pithy Gushy Superlatives of a Man in Love Not sure if this belongs more in the review section or here but figure it may take twists and turns and be updated...and obviously happy for others to contribute so I guess it will live here for now... I finally have my contours home with me. It has been another very favorable experience with Denis White AV on Unley road in ADL, specifically with Marek there. It all began several months ago when i noticed they were clearing the S1.4s at a very generous discount and that they had secured a supply for quite a few pairs. Curiosity lead to an (the first of many) audition...OOPS...and of course an audition lead to desire, temptation. Much like Oscar Wilde - resisting temptation is not one of my finer qualities and so i commenced down the slippery slope of justification. And so a lay-buy was setup and between then and now i had the privilege of many extended listening sessions in store and now finally, at home. So here's my thoughts - disjointed and often from a memory that is hardly infallible Every well known brand has it's Fanboys (and girls) and I am probably at risk of being in this category with Dyn's - possibly partially to spite my father who is both feet firmly in the B&W Brigade In fairness however I have always loved the craftsmanship of Dyn speakers and from when i first heard them the tonal characteristics they present across the whole range had me. I have lived very happily with a pair of X16s from their excite range and didn't really think i would move on up anytime soon. Firstly, the craftsmanship is astounding. My Excites are a solid, well engineered Standmount speaker and hefty enough at 9.0kg a piece. These are next level... 12.6kg each, solid metal baffles, magnetic grills and an exquisitely lacquered timber veneer. Ah, that finish - for weeks i flip flopped between oiled walnut and lacquered Bubinga. Both are beautiful - I was 'this' close to deciding on the Walnut as it's smart, very Scandinavian looking and classy yet understated. That said the Bubinga is a highly polished jewel. Forget furniture grade this is god only knows how many coats of glass-like clear on some of the most exquisitely grained timber I have ever witnessed. I love the look of these, Majestically tall and lean, sitting atop their own plinth that is neatly recessed in on all sides. The plinth houses the binding posts and the crossover is also mounted to this (or so I`m told). Interestingly, I am finding in situ they look quite handsome with the grills snapped into place (which is lucky as i have two dogs who seem not to know where their tails start and end...) but the perverted nerd in me loves to see `em nekid and I imagine this is how all critical listening will occur, although right now they are being `broken in` and sound absolutely luverly behind the veiled mask.
  2. Has anyone heard the Dynaudio Contour s1.4 LE speakers yet? I don't have any shops nearby where I can audition a s1.4, neither the old one, nor the newer LE one. I have heard the Dynaudio Focus 160 and Confidence C1 Signature, so it would be great if someone could compare against those. I liked the 160, apart from a slight edge on the treble one a few songs, but on most songs this didn't happen. This is slightly under budget, but I'd have bought it if it wasn't so ugly. The C1 didn't have the issue at all, and is breathtaking in the mid range and treble, and digs deep in the bass, kicking hard. It's too expensive though. I love the look of the new s1.4 LE, so if it has what the 160 has without the treble spikes it would be great. I listen to almost all kinds of music, so it's important to me to have an all rounder. If someone hasn't heard the C1 or 160, maybe they could compare against one of the ones below: Speakers that sounded good on my amplifier (the one I'll likely run these on): Dynaudio Confidence C1 Signature Vienna Acoustics Bach Grand SE Vienna Acoustics Mozart Grand SE Linn Majik Isobarik ATC SCM 11 ATC SCM 19 PMC Twenty.23 Jamo D830 Spendor SA1 B&W PM1 Speakers that sounded OK on my amplifier: PMC Twenty.24 Dynaudio Focus 160 Dali Rubicon 2 AudioPhysic Classic 20 Spendor A5 Spendor D7 B&W CM9 B&W CM10 Sonus Faber Toy Tower Speakers that sounded bad on my amplifier: Proac Response D18 Linn Majik 140 PMC Twenty.22 Naim Ovator S400 Sonus Faber Cremona Spendor SP3/1R2

  9. Thinking of upgrading your floorstanders? Please consider letting me buy your 2nd Hand Dynaudio Contour speakers. I would like to replace the floorstanders in my Dynaudio system and am looking for a 2nd Hand pair of any of these Dynaudio Contour models: 1.8, 1.8 Mk II, 2.8 or 3.4 S - wanted! Can't afford new ones, but any of the mentioned speakers would be a good match for my existing setup. Not fussy about cosmetic issues - any of the wood finishes would be nice, even major cabinet dings or scratches are absolutely no problem, as long as the speakers are still in perfect working order (incl. membranes preferably still ok). It's the sound that counts! Have a matching center speaker too? Please let me know if you can help..
  10. Item: Dynaudio Contour s3.4 (pair) Location: Lara VIC 3212 Price: $3000 PRICE REDUCTION $2800 Item Condition: Mechanically Perfect. Cosmetically Good - V. Good. Reason for selling: Not entirely sure myself. Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD, Bank Deposit Extra Info: Pair of Dynaudio Contour s3.4 floorstanding speakers. Purchased ex-Demo from Carlton Audio Visual mid 2012 - I have the receipt and can provide a copy. Approx 3 years of 5 year warranty remaining. Work perfectly - They sound amazing. Extremely accurate with a slightly dark sound. From the web The Dynaudio Contour S 3.4 delivers a natural, life-like sound due to its incredible balance. The Contour Cabinet is strengthened by cross braces in specific areas to achieve a solid, vibration-free construction. Internally, the MDF walls are damped with an extremely dense material that absorbs even the most microscopic resonance. In conjunction with the advanced metal baffle construction, an extremely stiff and rigid unit is created, further ennobled by the finely polished surface of a beautifully finished real wood veneer. The innovative base plinth, derived from the Dynaudio Confidence range, serves as a stylish yet solid stand for the speakers. The crossover is mounted on a smaller block, between the plinth and the cabinet, away from unwanted vibrations and resonance, while using the shortest possible path-lengths to the gold plated WBT terminals. The sensitive components are thus isolated from any potential performance compromising factors. In the S 3.4, the new Esotec tweeter is used; it features a double magnet system that ensures extremely high power handling and precise control of movement of the dome. Technical Specifications Sensitivity 86 dB (2,83 V/1 m) IEC Power Handling 270 W Impedance 4 Ohms Frequency Response 35 Hz – 25 kHz (± 3 dB) Box Principle 2-way bass-reflex Crossover Frequency 2000 Hz Weight 33.3 kg Dimensions (W x H x D) 357 x 1226 x 366 mm 14.1 x 48.3 x 14.4" ----------------------------------- I'd love to keep these but the other half wanted her room back and we're paying for renovations so time to downsize for a while. As they were ex-demo there are a couple of cosmetic blemishes. I have photographed these. I guarantee it does not diminish my enjoyment of the speakers and doubt it would diminish yours. All drivers in perfect working order. I would prefer local pickup as they are heavy buggers. I am more than happy to deliver around Melbourne. I do not have the original packaging. These currently sell for $7,495.00 at Stereophonic. I will accept reasonable offers. If you wish to purchase these and any of my other items for sale: Bryston 4BSST2 or Melody SHW1688 preamplifier contact me and we can work out a good package price. Any reasonable questions welcome. 11. Item: Dynaudio Contour SCX Centre Speaker with Matching Stand Location: Brisbane, Qld Price: $1750 with Stand. $1500 without stand. Item Condition: 9/10, Excellent Reason for selling: No Longer used Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Bank Deposit Extra Info: I am the second owner of this speaker and bought it off the original owner about 2 years ago. It is in perfect unmarked condition and comes with the optional (adjustable) Dynaudio "Centre Base2" Stand. The stand alone sold for $900 I believe. The CSX Centre speaker (rrp $4199) is significantly better than the standard Contour SC Centre (rep $2799). The next step up the Dynaudio range in the way of a centre is the $10k Confidence centre, so in my mind the CSX is the pick of the bunch (bang for buck wise) if you are looking for a centre speaker to match Dynaudio Foucs, Contour or Confidence front speakers. The SCX uses the Esotar tweeter which I believe is the same one used in the Dynaudio Confidence range. This centre speaker sounds superb. Voices are articulate and natural sounding through this centre and it really brought my home theatre experience to the next level. I apologise if I have any of the above RRPs wrong. I got them all from google - http://www.rio.com.au/brands/5/dynaudio/ I just wanted to give you an idea of where this speaker sits in the Dynaudio range. There are no marks, dings or dents on the speaker, and it is in perfect working order. There is a small mark on the back corner of the "Centre BAse2" stand which I have tried to show in the last pic. You can't see this mark unless you bend down behind the speaker and look carefully. I have the original box and manual and can post anywhere in australia at buyers cost and risk. Pictures:
  12. So I purchased a new pair of Focus 160s from Douglas as a Christmas present to myself in 2011 and I've been thoroughly enjoying them since pairing them up with my Plinius Hautonga earlier this year. Now I've come across a pair of S1.4s selling for cheaper than what I paid for my 160s and I'm seriously considering upgrading. My question is, would the S1.4s be a step up from the brand new Focus 160 line, considering the 160 utilizing newer hardware? Also I'm unaware of how old these S1.4s are, would it be worth going from brand new pair of 160s to older speakers?
