  1. I see the latest Luxman speaker cables have this wire called a "drain wire". Does anyone have any idea what it is meant to do because I'm confused as to its intended purpose. http://www.luxman.com/product/detail.php?id=31 It seems to be utilized in the interconnects as well.

Plenty of positive reviews all over the forums. 4. Item: Isotek EVO3 Premier Power Cable 1.5m Location: Kew Victoria Price: $135 + shipping Item Condition: excellent Reason for selling: too large Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: purchased this from Carlton Audio 6 weeks ago unfortunately the amp I'm using at the moment is longer and therefore the front of the amp now sits out over the cabinet it is sitting on more than I can aesthetically deal with. Carlton Audio lent me 4 power chords in the $250 to $300 range. All of them sounded way better than standard cable. However I felt the other 3 reduced bass punch a little, where Isotek Premier did not at all. Chime in with suggestions of power chord with smaller plug units particularly at the amp end as I'm back to kettle chord. I stupidly threw out the box, so it's not included Photos: Advertisements without photos of the actual item will not be approved.
  5. Hello All I certainly can't say I'm an expert in audio, and know even less about electronics. I'm hoping for some answers to a few questions primarily to do with earthing/grounding, and also how amps connected to the same DAC may influence each other. I've been undertaking some A/B tests using a 3.5 mm A/B switch, an RCA A/B switch, and a 4-pin XLR one, which I'd modified from a 3-pin switch. All switches were Sescom switches, bi-directional, and a photo of the XLR version is below, and the setups relevant to my questions are Config 1 and Config 2 below. The original wiring diagram of the 3pin switch is below, and it's purpose in pro-audio is naturally going to be different to hifi (mono long cable runs vs mono/stereo short cable runs, comparatively). Note that whether the pin numbering is actually correct I don't know, but I'm not sure that it really matters for these questions. So my questions: 3-pin XLR switch 1) With the cable shield being passed to pin 1, does joining all three connector grounds do anything? 2) Given pin 1 isn't switched, won't whatever interference collected by the A/B shields be passed through to each other and whatever the I/O is (and vice versa)? If so, is this an issue and how? 4-pin XLR switch 3) Assuming either the Config 1 or Config 2 setup is being used, and the XLR cables between the switch and the Amps do have the shields soldered to the connector housing, if the connector housings were electrically connected like they were with the 3-pin setup, will there be any impact on the signals from either Amp to the headphones? 4) Some headphone cables (with shields) either do or don't have the shields soldered to the connector. Assuming all connectors in the switch are electrically connected like the 3-pin setup, will there be any difference in the sound signature with a shielded vs non-shielded headphone cable? Config 1 vs Config 2 5) Using one DAC as per Config 2, two 3 pin XLR (or RCA cables) will be needed with a Y-splitter. This electrically connects both Amps and assuming they're both running, will one Amp influence the other? That is, will the signal change? Thanks in advance for any responses

  15. Any old excuse for a Poll. It's just been too long. I made myself some RG213-U speaker cables long ago and used them on and off until now they are a bit frail and their terminations (serviceable but not great to begin with) and now getting fairly ratty. So, since I no longer have access to a decent shed full of tools I asked Geoff of Aurealis audio to make me up a set, and he did. Of course he used higher quality spades and bananas than my original pair and added some nice looking braid as well, so my new pair is much nicer to look at than my old pair (which is soon to be recycled for bits). Nicely finished. And labeled too. Fancy! What's that, you want to see a pic of my old pair. No, you don't. You really don't. Trust me on this. The reason I built a pair of speaker cables out of RG213-U in the first place was that it was touted as the lowest inductance cable that you could get your hands on at a decent price. And for speaker cables inductance is an important quality, so I bought some and put a pair together. Their performance was good, often not noticeable as better or worse than any of the other speaker cable pairs I have had... but not always. The big plus of these babies was made clear to me when I tried them out with my Halcro power amp. That's right, $40-odd dollar speaker cables used with an eye-wateringly expensive power amp, yep. Once I'd tried them together no other speaker cables quite lived up to the RG213, the bass weight of the Halcro just didn't sound as good with anything else. This did seem odd to me, but you know, stranger things and all that, probably a synergy thing, so I filed that info away for possible later use and moved on. Move forwards to now and I've got a fancy new set that I was thinking of using as my standard cables for all my amp evaluating. I have more expensive cables but many of the amps I write up are $3K and below and no-one is going to use $1K cables with these so nice cheap-and-effective speaker cables seem like a good idea. But, it turns out that they have a pretty distinct sound. I discovered this a few days ago while having a preliminary listen to a borrowed Naim XS 2 (which I intended to be listening to today). At first I thought that the Naim had an extremely good top end and mid range but the bass was big, broad and prominent, slow and muddled and not very deep. The vocals were some of the best I had ever heard and the musicality was simply astounding but that bass was quite the let down. Changing speaker cables brought the bass speed and detail back up and removed the muddled effect but it took a little of the musicality with it. Still a good amp but one that now sounds different enough that I need another few hours to get used to it before I start making notes on it. So, that's why the Poll (not that we need a reason, that's just a bonus). Any others out there with RG213-U speaker cable experience?
