  1. Hi All, I was wondering whether it might be worth starting up an Antipodes Thread where all comments/questions/comparisons can be logged in one place? EDIT Update...will start off by listing all the reviews I have read: Current Models http://www.digitalaudioreview.net/2015/05/antipodes-audio-dx-music-server-review/ http://www.digitalaudioreview.net/2015/08/antipodes-audio-update-entry-level-ds-music-server/ http://www.stereophile.com/content/antipodes-dx-reference-music-server#sOHd6roMyrOroWAT.97 http://positive-feedback.com/audio-discourse/audio-ramblings-the-antipodes-dx-music-server/ http://www.audiostream.com/content/antipodes-reference-series-dx-music-server http://www.audiostream.com/content/antipodes-reference-series-dx-music-server-part-2#VqkwxjgBEgm6S6Hw.97 Older Models http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/antipodes/1.html http://www.audiophilia.com/wp/?p=12895 http://www.witchdoctor.co.nz/index.php/2013/03/antipodes-audio-ds1-music-server-review/ My DS: Next, I took delivery today of a new Antipodes DS (mk.3). This replaced a Mk.1. First impressions - very impressive! The first comment is that compared to the original DS, the form factor is at least 1 inch (maybe 2) wider, with some serious heat-sinkage on the sides. I guess the old DS used to get pretty warm, especially during marathon CD-digitising sessions. Please see the photo below. The second comment is that the power supply has gone through a big change, now it is about half the size of the unit as well. Mark Jenkins has previously described this as a hybrid PS. I notice that it has a fan to keep it cool. I don't have the old unit to do a side-by-side comparison, but all in all, I think this has driven a wider soundstage. Sound is not noticeably clearer than before, but bass has more weight. For those that can't (or don't want to) afford a DX, then the DS can perform a pretty good job, at least as good as a CD. (I'll let the unit burn in a bit more and then do a better comparison). I'm also keen to try the SPDIF connection vs the USB, to see if I can perceive a difference. I'm certainly very happy with the new unit, it looks like Mark Jenkins has come up with the goods again! Torben
  2. Further Information: Original owner, I only used this as a roon endpoint via ethernet but it can also be used as a server if internal storage is fitted or external storage is attached. USB out to a dac although there are also rca's out from an internal dac. All the original accessories and packaging included.
  3. Item: Antipodes Audio DS Gen 2 Location: Forestville NSW Price: $1,300 Item Condition: Used but scratch free Reason for selling: Change of setup & funds for other upgrades Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal Extra Info: I purchased this from Addicted to Audio just as they were moving the distributorship to Pure Music Group. I then replaced the spinning drive for an SSD (128 Gb) and upgraded the software to Antipodes 2 in June last year. So please note that internally this doesn't have much capacity, but it can reference NAS shares (this is what I did from a QNAP) or you can mount a USB attached drive in the rear if you wanted. CD drive is for ripping. Comes with original 12V SMPS and I believe even better performance can be achieved with Antipodes upgraded Linear power supply. I've used it mostly in Roon Server mode. So besides having an excellent USB out for a DAC, it also was used to stream to other NAA devices such as Sonore microRendu & Auralic Aries Mini, and Airplay devices like Apple TV. I have original boxes and so can ship if required. Also to note, both Antipodes and the local distributor Pure Music Group provide great support to all their gear. Recently the CMOS battery ran out, and rather than trust it to my clumsy hands I reached out to PMG who fixed it all for the cost of postage. Pictures:
  4. Like everybody in Australia if I want to have Internet and land line access I have to transfer to the supposedly better NBN? I contacted Telstra to connect and I was sent a new Router/Modem that is compatible with the NBN. It is dual band. As far as I know my old Router is single band. I am not yet on the NBN but decided to try the new box. I plugged the new box in and changed the password on my Android tablet. I use Roon on an Antipodes DX. Surprisingly to me at least the connection to Roon was immediate compared to the previous wait of a minute to sometimes hours to establish a connection. Wonderful. There was another surprise. When I started to play a track that happened to be something that I was very familiar with there was an immediate small but noticeable change. It sounded better. I wasn't even hoping for or expecting a change. The noise floor which in my system is minimal became better still. I didn’t believe what I was hearing and thought that it was just imaginitis. That I was mad. I spoke to a couple of people who confirmed my madness diagnosis. I contacted rmpfyf who interestingly said that there probably would be a benefit. This surprised me. The explanation was that with the new router there would be less interrupts with the DX on the network and it could just get on with doing what it was supposed to do without interference. That is just play the file. Ric confirmed the benefit. He explained that he tunes his network in respect of packet size, subnet mask and other PC tweaks etc to achieve output benefits. He said that there is whole range of things that can be done to tune the network IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. I assume that some SNA members know how to tune their networks. I don’t unfortunately. Obviously, there are benefits with network tuning. NBN connection happens Friday afternoon. That will be interesting but I am happy with what has happened serendipitously and totally unexpectedly so far. John
  5. Item: Antipodes DX G2 Black Location: Sunshine Coast QLD Price: $4,400 Item Condition: Excellent Reason for selling: Not being used Extra info: It has a 2TB SDD containing around 91Gig of flac files. Has switchable power inputs (115V or 230V) A review: https://www.hifi-advice.com/blog/review/digital-reviews/network-player-reviews/antipodes-dx-music-server/ The only reason I'm listing this is I use a Bacch4Mac dsp and it only runs on Apple gear https://www.theoretica.us/bacch4mac/ ......I eventually and reluctantly gave in. If I wasn't addicted to BACCH I would NOT be listing this server. It cost me just over $9K, It's coming up to 3 y/o. I want to buy some other hi fi gear and the DX is not being used. It has all the features mentioned in the antipodes review above except it has only usb out. Mark Jenkins decided (at the time) to provide only what he considered the best output. (earlier versions had AES/coax etc.) This is the best sounding server I have ever heard. Mark Jenkins is the master at this stuff. His approach to radically reducing electrical (and mechanical) noise without interfering with signal (achieved through not filtering) makes this one box server one of the best in the world.... and no spinning HDD's here, only separate SSD's. This thing is so versatile yet so easy to use. You don't need to be a level one computer programmer to use it. It rips CD's in paranoid mode before storing to the drive. If you don't want to use it as a ROON Core you can playback using Squeezbox Server...controlled from your iphone (eg. Ipeng) or the app: "Orange Squeeze" for your Android device). USB ports at the rear of the DX enable easily backup your valuable files to an external drive of at a click of a button (see the apps tab in the review above.) Basically the DX is a fantastic sounding Server that's easy to use. Its a fantastic way of keeping your CD's on file and transitioning to the world of streaming, where you can select any track at the touch of a button. I have Roon for life and love it but I should mention that selecting and setting up free to air (global) digital radio stations is FAR easier on the DX (via squeezbox) than it is on Roon! You can also have both No cat or dog hair, I'm not a smoker, was always used with power regulation (PS Audio P-10). Feel free to pm (pers message) me if you want to ask specifics, arrange a listen etc. Photos:
  6. Item: Antipodes DS SSD (2TB SSD running version 2.3 software) Location: Melbourne Inner East Price: $3000 ONO Item Condition: Close to Mint Reason for selling: Highly Likely working overseas during parts of 2017, also to fund travel and other purchases. Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal (+3% for paypal fees), Direct Debit, (will consider posting but local options first) Extra Info: Bought new from Puremusicgroup on 24/08/2016. Have been running Roon (not included in sale) in conjunction HQplayer and also Roon Direct (via USB). The sound quality of the antipodes takes a big leap forward versus the mac mini i was using prior to this. This model has a 2TB internal SSD drive which should hold a substantial music collection. I have a collection of around 8TB so also connected to a Synology NAS via Ethernet. If I sell the Antipodes some of the music ( a lot is lossless FLAC) could be "accidentally" left on the antipodes SSD. I have the original box. The SSD can be upgraded to the GT equivalent with replacement power supply Pictures:
  7. Item: Antipodes Audio DS Gen 2 Location: Forestville NSW Price: $1,600 $1,500 Final Item Condition: Used but scratch free Reason for selling: Change of setup Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal Extra Info: I purchased this from Addicted to Audio just as they were moving the distributorship to Pure Music Group. I then replaced the spinning drive for an SSD (128 Gb) and upgraded the software to Antipodes 2 in June last year. 8. Item: Antipodes DS mk.3 music server Location: North Melbourne Price: $1950 Item Condition: unmarked Reason for selling: upgrading Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: I received this DS new from Mark Jenkins in October 2015. It is the mark 3 which is the current version. In July 2016, I had it upgraded to the Antipodes 2 software (SW version is 2.3 now) and purchased a licence to Roon, which I loaded and have been using since then (not included). This DS comes with 4TB of HDD and is unmarked condition. It comes with the hybrid power supply which created a great improvement over my previous unit (a DS mark 1), along with the Antipodes 2 software which also brought a significant improvement in sound quality. I believe the new price in Australia is $2,900 for the unit and approx $1,000 for the storage, so I think buyers are getting a very fair price. I'm a big Antipodes fan and the reason for selling is that I am exploring further up the chain. Most people will be familiar with the 5 star reviews and awards it has won, but here are some links if you want to revisit them: http://www.digitalaudioreview.net/2016/01/antipodes-audio-ds-music-server-review/ http://www.audiostream.com/content/antipodes-ds-music-server#jeR348uy3Jtsv7Fe.97 The unit comes boxed and therefore I can ship Australia-wide (or I can even bring it to Auckland on my next trip in March, if you are a NZ buyer).
