  3. My first set of speakers were purchased at the ripe old age of 12 after saving months of paper round money. You could say I was bitten by a love of music and audio quite early, influenced as I was by my father's audio system purchased with the windfall from a horse bet! Since that time I have been fortunate to own a varied and eclectic range of speakers in the pursuit of my audio nirvana over the last three decades. Everything from stacked active Quad ESL57's, Tannoy D700's, a TAD based 2-way system, Magneplanar IIb, Equinox Jupiters, VAF I-93 and most recently, ADAM Alpha 5-way actives. I have been fortunate to live with speakers of a wide range of characteristics and capabilities and heard many other systems in between, and so have developed a rather discerning ear as a result. In 2006 I was fortunate to meet and spend an evening with a legend of the Australian Audio Industry, John Burnett of Lenard Audio. I sat quietly in Johns garden shed in awe at the sound of his 4-way active Sarabandes. The power, the immediacy, and realism was something that totally belied their humble looks and relative cost. I knew I was in the company of a true expert of audio design. Time spent reading Johns website and its education pages and learning about his various designs reaffirmed the impact the Sarabandes made on me that evening. This Experience inspired me in 2008, to build up a passive 2-way MTM system using TAD 1601a/4001, this gave me a real taste of what an endgame speaker was potentially capable of. The immediacy and realism that those 15" cones and a 4" compression driver could generate was exciting & intoxicating, but my meagre DIY skills were unable to address the many crossover related SQ issues that plagued the sound and so I eventually sold them on for something more conventional. As I learnt more about Johns designs and his origins in valve amplifiers and high-efficiency systems and his schooling in classical audio science from the 60's, back before marketing took precedence over SQ, I knew that I had to re-visit my unfinished business with high efficiency and TAD. Recently John and I discussed my requirements - superlative realism, uncompromising dynamic range and world class bass capability being three attributes I could not live with out. However, I wanted something that was relatively compact ie under 1.5m and 100kg as I wanted to live with these for decades to come. John told me about a design concept that he had been waiting to realise which had been bubbling away in the back of his mind for at least the last ten years that embodied the accumulation of his lifetime's knowledge. A system that had the attributes I was seeking and the makings of being my endgame system which brings me to the point where I can finally step off the audio merry go round. So, speakerless and determined to own a system approaching the very best, I have commissioned John to build me a 4-way active system based on this concept utilising TAD drivers and dubbed the Symphony. It will utilise 4 x 12" compound cavity loaded bass per side, TAD 1601a for mid bass, a TAD TD-4001 compression driver and the TAD ET-703 horn loaded tweeter. Amplification will be four channels of Johns hand built AB design with active crossovers. I was fortunate to hear an early prototype this last weekend whilst back in Australia and to state the SQ was astounding would barely be doing what I heard justice. I lack the vocabulary to describe the prototypes sound without slipping into the usual audio jargon but it goes without saying, I am super excited at the prospect of owning a system that is truly my endgame. The bass energy was huge and incredibly resolving, John explained that the Symphony bass system was equivalent to 2 x 15" drivers in a sealed 16 cuft box per side. I will keep this thread updated as development work progresses but for now, here's a few pics of the concept to date and some of Johns less WAF friendly work. Cheers, Simon

  5. Item: Lenard Audio Opal Class System Location: Sale Victoria 3850. Auditions welcome. Will help with shipping to any location. Price: $65,000 please read description Item Condition: Fully refurbished as new condition Reason for selling: Needs a new home Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD. Extra Info: This Lenard white Opal system was commissioned in 1988. The charter was for the system to be (a) of the highest fidelity (b) the best JBL classic speaker components and (c) be capable of giving an experience of actually being at a real concert. The original commission budget for this this system in 1988 was $65,000. Lenard systems are brought into the world by those with the means to do so. It is difficult to put a value on something that is virtually never sold in the secondhand market. The true valuation can only be set by the new owner and will be respected. Anyone who knows Lenard systems will tell you their owners keep them for life. The person who charted this system also had his music room acoustically designed by the late Richard Priddle. The passage of time and an unforeseen change in circumstances has resulted in this system looking for its new home. The new owner will immediately recognise this system and will have an environment that is perfectly suited. Most of all he/she will be passionate about music and been longing for a system that transcends all limitations. This Lenard white Opal system is 4-way active. Each speaker stack has two x 15", a 12", a compression-driver horn and a slot radiator. Beside each speaker stack are the amplifier towers. Each amplifier tower has five 100 Watt valve amplifers. Each amplifier is Ultra-Linear, Class AB push-pull. All twenty KT88 valves have been renewed and the system is in as new perfect working order. Each amplifier tower also has solid-state amps. The towers can be switched between valve amps and solid-state amps in real time. As yet no one has been able to pick the difference between the valve and solid-state amps. This being one of the many astounding achievements of Lenard design. The cabinets were originally diamond white. The system had been moved and stored and now resprayed satin white. This decision was made so the new owner could change the color to suit his environment or return it to its original diamond white with minimal extra cost. The system is being looked after and located in Sale Victoria. One cannot speculate as to how this system performs, it must be experienced and will be made available for audition to all interested parties. This system belongs to a dear friend of mine, I am listing here on his behalf. Please PM me if interested and I will put you in direct contact with the owner. Pictures: There are only 4 of these valve towers in existence. 2 with the Canberra Opals, and these two. Built to last a lifetime and infinitely serviceable. System when it was originally commissioned.
  6. Looking for other 4 tower speaker system owners to share experiences. Having come from a traditional large floor standing speaker the learning curve has been steep for myself. I have found a setup that I am extremely happy with but the journey has been quite challenging due to the many variables associated with a 4 tower system. I appreciate there are many different types, manufacturer's and what will work in one room may differ but I expect a lot of the pitfalls and tips to be similar .A long shot as not too sure how many SNA members have experience with 4 tower speakers but any input appreciated.

  8. I am building 4 way active speakers and need a 8 channel power amp to run each driver separately. Any recommendation? they will need to handle a 4 Ohm load. Drivers are as follows: Upper Bass - ScanSpeak 22W/8851T-00 8"Revelator Woofer - 8 Ohm Midrange - ScanSpeak 12MU/8731T-00, 4" Illuminator Midrange Tweeter - ScanSpeak D2908/7140 Beryllium Dome Revelator Tweeter - 8 Ohm Midrange – Another 12MU/8731T-00 wired in Parallel with the one above (MTM) 4 Ohm (8 Ohm in parallel) Lower Bass - ScanSpeak 32W/4878T Revelator 13" Subwoofer - 4 Ohm
  9. Item: Behringer DCX2496 and DEQ2496 pair Location: Perth Price: $300.00 Item Condition: Good Reason for selling: Surplus Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal (add 3%), Bank Deposit Extra Info: I can post for $50 Australia wide. These were my crossover and equaliser at one time in my active Tannoy + Eminence setup. I have gone pack to passive for now. I never had a problem with either of them. When I dragged them out to photograph the DEQ came up with an error. I opened it up and re-seated the only two connectors able to do so and it fired up no problems. The tyranny of sitting idle I guess. So I have priced this for the one unit and you get a bonus one. There are a ton of books with them and you can see I have made some custom Tasmanian oak end pieces. The original rack mounting ears are in the plastic bag with the screws. Grab a bargain. Pictures:

  12. After some fantastic feedback after the first demonstration of the latest active version of the I-93MKII speakers at the Melbourne international HiFi show and sending them for a couple of private demo's they've finally landed back in our showrooms for audition. Connected to the outstanding DEQX to control the cross over requirements and with three channels of amplification on board each speaker (600 watts in total!) they're sounding pretty darn good. You can see the image below, standard passive version back plate next to the active one. In this instance we're running from the DEQX processor via balanced XLR cables to the internal amplification. We will release further information about these and the other active options we're finalising. Basically expect active versions of the current signature range, and upgrade options for existing owners. Thanks for all the support to date and we're looking forward to some really cool stuff for next year. cheers and thanks again, Simon and the VAF team.

  15. Item: Complete Active System (minus speakers). Comprising of 1 x Najda (diy deqx system) and 2 x 3 channel amplifiers (Ska Audio modules) Location: Jimboomba Qld 4280 Price: $1800 1500 ONO Delivered for whole lot ..or $900 for Najda dsp and $400 for each 3 channel amplifier if sold separately. Item Condition: Excellent Reason for selling: Recently gone back to passive to get some room back(1 less amp spot) Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: This system would be great for those who would like to go active. It includes the Najda DSP which is basically similar to a DEQX. This has 8 x outputs which come from it's inbuilt dac. It is controlled via pc software/interface and has everything you could think of. 1. Najda DIY Deqx with very low noise power supplies. Info can be found at Najda website. Najda Overview Najda is a multi-purpose stereo applications electronic board designed to sit at the heart of custom sound systems, between sources and amplifiers. Najda indeed is both a multi-way DSP filtering processor, and also a complete interfacing solution providing the same comfort of use one would expect from a modern integrated system - but in your custom package. Najda as a multi-way processor Najda takes on its input an analogue stereo signal or a digital one - it can be SPDIF coaxial, SPDIF optical or merely I2S. The latter suits particularly well to a USB to I2S converter. Digital signals pass through the onboard sample rate converter so that there's no need worrying about the source's sampling rate. Outputs are available in various forms too. 8 unbalanced analogue outputs, with analogue volume and configurable level, let you feed immediately 8 power amps in order to build any system as large as 2x4 ways. If you have special requirements - for example you'd like balanced outputs - then you can connect your own DACs to the 10 SPDIF outs and achieve a 2x5 ways system. Additionally, another 3 pairs of signals with free routing are available as I2S. In between is the dual-core DSP, which implements on 10 processing channels a wide range of algorithms useful for multi-way speaker management. Please refer to the software section to read more about the available algorithms. Internal DSP sampling rate is user selectable and can be any of 48, 96 and 192 kHz. Najda as a complete interfacing solution In order to integrate Najda into his system, the user needs to provide: A standard 2x16 LCD display - can be any size and any colour A standard IR receiver module 8 push-buttons Optionally up to 7 leds In return, the user is being given the comfort of a modern system interface in a custom package. Commands that Najda understands - via keypad or IR remote controller - are various and include of course volume change and input source select, but also tone control and balance adjusts as well as filtering preset recall. Full operating status is presented on the LCD display. As many as 9 filtering presets can be stored in Najda's non-volatile memory and recalled from the fingertip, in order to ease A/B comparisons between several filtering strategies or simply to enable different filtering options adapted to the content. Najda boasts a Learn function that allows setting the remote controller behaviour in less than a minute. 2. 2 x 3 channel amplifiers. This has 3 of SKA-GB150D amplifiers in each box. Info at Greg Balls Website. Pictures: Active DSP. Najda. * Channel Output
  16. Item: Dynaudio 110A Active Speakers (pair) Location: Adelaide Price: $1100 Item Condition: Very Good to excellent - I can't see any defects apart from some dust the flash revealed. Reason for selling: Stepping up the line. Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal (buyer pays pp fee) or Bank deposit. Happy to ship to mainland Oz for $40. Extra Info: I'm sorry for the ordinary phone pics. If I get a chance I may get some better ones up in a few days. They do show condition pretty well though I think. Plenty of reviews on the web but the gist of these I'd say is that they get you into the sound quality of the Focus line without the difficulty, expense and decor difficulties in finding compatible amplification (which is not an insignificant problem for some of them). Any line level source can drive them and they sound full, warm and dynamic to my ears. For a small to medium sized room, office or bedroom they are just fantastic and to underscore the commonly used description - they sound larger than their dimensions would suggest. These have have little use as the previous owner had them in a second system and was using Contour S1.4s for his primaries. I've had a taste and now I intend to move up the Dynaudio line. For me these were a noticeable step up in quality from the old Audience series, the DM2/7, Excite x14's or Xeo 3s - which I guess is to be expected! Pictures:
  17. Fast, Cheap and Loud a three way for my spare room/workshop/bedroom. My newish project, almost two years in the doing of it. As I now only have one functioning hand this has taken twice as long as it should have. The workmanship is a bit cruddy, but these are only for me. They look a bit old fashioned with their wider than deep looks but this is for a reason. Originally they were going to be just for a fifteen inch co-ax my Tannoy HPD 385's. Then I had a change of heart and decided that the Tannoys should be saved for a more retro project. Next idea was 12" Eminence co-ax. They are still bolted to the original baffles. Then I had the urge for a three way using a Fane 12" as the bottom with B&C 6pev13 mids and Davis KV2 tweeters for an all cone setup. A beautiful, unusual and very musical tweeter and it goes loud, very loud. Check out the magnet size, this tweeter weighs more than my Scan woofers. In the end I had to pass on this setup as I need to reglue the surrounds on the Davis K2's This is the box I ended up with, set up for three way with a midrange chamber.
  18. Crazy but true, 6 weeks at a time at sea is crushing without some sort of quality audio. So here it is - AURALiC Aries Mini with aftermarket LPSU, iFi iDSD DAC and a pair of nice little Q-Acoustics BT-3 active monitors. Not shown: a second hand Mirage 8" subwoofer (it's next to the rubbish bin under the desk). And a 3tb WD Ultra USB powered hard drive chocka with tunes, DSD/hi-res flac and scheisse mp3 stuff. Does it sound good in my cabin on this bloody oil tanker? Is the Pope a catholic? Will the All Blacks beat the Wallabies? Hell yeah!
  19. Sorry to bring up an old thread but i guess you dont do these anymore Macca?
  20. Hi all So I am trying to wrap my head around trying to actively bi-amp my system. Currently have a Denon receiver, Halcro power amp and Paradigm tribute speakers (3 way) that have 2 sets of cable posts that are passively bi-amped. I understand if i install a crossover between the receiver and the power amp at the correct frequencies it will make a 2 way active bi-amp scenario but do I have to remove the crossovers from inside the speaker? Are the bottom posts and therefor bass drivers (with bridging links removed) separated from the top posts for mid and tweeter? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
  21. G'day I'm just come across this new article at Hifi zine It's about using a Mac to setup & run an active 2-way with a sub What we can do with a PC Mac in 2013 is quite impressive It aint no good to me coz I'm mot a MAc guy, so I use MiniDSP, but an impressive article all the same. http://www.hifizine.com/2013/06/pure-music-fabfilter-proq-active-speaker/ Graham
  22. I've just moved to Berlin for about 6 months and have left my stereo at home in Melbourne. I'm therefore on the market to make a fairly quick purchase of a pair of active monitors to be powered by my laptop, Jkenny Mk3 and Audio GD 10.32. I don't have a car here, nor a lot of time to get around to audio retailers and try out different monitors. The reason I've nominated these two models is that both can be bought for around 1000 euros here, and that they are both well-regarded, popular models with good resale. The system will be used for both general listening and for some mixing/monitoring. I'm looking for tonal neutrality, with no need for high SPLs. I've heard a few Genelec monitors in the past and like the sound of them. My impressions have been that they are maybe not highly revealing, but have a very neutral tonal balance and are enjoyable to listen to. The published measurements, if accurate, are also very good for the 8030As. I've never heard the Neumanns, nor can I find any measurements, although they are reputed to be a "revealing" speaker. Simply because I've heard the Genelecs, they are my first preference at this stage. Has anyone had experience with these two monitors? Cheers, Andreas
  23. Item: ADAM A5 Active Monitor (PAIR) Location: Sydney Price: $500 Item Condition: Good (There are some minor chip and sticker peeling from age) Reason for selling: contemplating to upgrade Payment Method: Paypal As a GIFT or please add 3% surcharge, Bank Deposit Extra Info: Comes with the power cable, Manual and stereolink cable (RCA cable) Pictures: See attachment Just wondering if anyone is interested in an Adam A5 Active Monitor that i bought sometime in 09. These monitors are not sold as matched pair (seller told me no such thing as matched pair for this speaker) so they might not be tightly matched together as with Hi-End hifi speakers but they sound the same to my ears. I bought it mainly becase of the ART tweeter which is what made them famous for its detailed yet smooth sound. Item is currently used as my desktop speaker but i am contemplating of letting it go in order to get a bigger bassy sound speaker for gaming purpose hence the EOI. Note that these are Active speaker and while each of the speaker has a built in volume control on them i recommend you use them with a preamp device to control your volume to lessen the hassle of controlling the volume of each speaker. While there is stereolink feature i would suggest not to use it as it reduces sound quality as per reviews on the net. The power switch is at the front of the speaker which i find beneficial for consumer use when compare to most monitors where they have them at the back. These are said to be the smaller version of Adam A7 which is a very popular home Studio monitor. A review from fellow SNA member can be found here http://www.stereo.ne...__fromsearch__1 Postage is $30 for Sydney $40 for Melbourne/Brisbane Unfortunately pickup is not available since lately i am mostly busy at work and away from home most of the time. General Informaton about the A5 (More information about the Adam A5 can be found also in the attached PDF brochure): The most compact ART of ADAM Built on the heritage of ADAM Studio Monitors, which are employed in many of the most renowned recording and sound studios around the world, the new compact A5 brings the same breakthrough ADAM loudspeaker technologies to multimedia applications such as desktop recording, broadcasting, gaming, home theater and surround applications. The A5 uses ADAMs proprietary tweeter transducer technology (ART) and a smaller version of the same Rohacell woofer found in the most popular ADAM Studio Monitors. The A5 provides out-standing sound quality unprecedented in a speaker of such small size. Amplifiers and controls Two built-in 25 Watt amplifiers power the drivers directly. The front of the A5 sports dual ports for surprising low frequency response down to 55Hz, metal grills for durability, as well as power and gain controls. The rear panel includes balanced (XLR) jacks, unbalanced (RCA) jacks, and a host of EQ controls to tailor the sound to suit room acoustics or personal taste. Stereolink The A5 employs a new development by ADAM called Stereolink. This new technology connects two A5 speakers in such a manner as to allow the user the option to control the overall stereo volume of the system from either speakers gain control. This makes the A5 a natural for "mixer-less" desktop applications where overall system volume needs to be adjusted often and from a single control. Optional subwoofer and table stands (NOTE: These OPTIONAL items are not included in the sale since i did not buy them) ADAM Audio also offers a new subwoofer, the Sub7, which has been specially designed for the A5. Despite its rather small footprint, the Sub7 is capable of extending the reproduction of an A5 system down to 31Hz. In addition, there are optional desktop/table stands available that have been designed to optimize the acoustics of the A5. Adam_Audio_A5_Brochure.pdf A5_ReviewSelection_engl_dt.pdf
