  1. Phoenix engineering Eagle PSU In a previous thread I posted about the problems I was having with the speed of my VPI Aries 3. It was running slow and it was clear that the size of the pulley on the motor way slightly too small. So the table ran slow. VPI's solution was buy an SDS power supply. Which it would have had but my secondhand unit did not. Fair enough although I would have thought the basic mechanics on a very expensive table would more precise than 31 or 32 rpm. Thread here http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/index.php?/topic/69295-vpi-running-slow-motor-capacitor/ In the interim I wound some Teflon tape around the pulley as a temporary solution. It worked better than I expected. But still not great. So rather than buy the VPI SDS unit I decided to try the Phoenix engineering Eagle PSU plus Road runner tachometer. http://www.phoenix-engr.com/#!/ http://hifiheaven.net/store/Phoenix-Engineering-Eagle-15-Watt-High-Power-PSU-Turntable-Speed-Controller?filter_name=Eagle&sort=pd.name&order=ASC Note that I could not use the cheaper Phoenix Falcon PSU because my Aries has a 10W motor. The Falcon is only good up to 5W. The Eagle seems to be the same thing but with an external amp to give it the extra grunt I needed The pair set me back about $1100 by the time I landed it here in Oz. The reason to choose the Eagle over the VPI SDS (AU$1800) is that 1) it's significantly cheaper and 2) more importantly the roadrunner unit actively monitors and adjusts the rotational speed in real time. I ordered the unit online (as above) and after a PayPal transaction and a note to tell them to configure it for 230V 50Hz my unit was sent out and arrived about a week later. The pics below show what you get. Everything you need except for a power cord for your region is included. The switch mode power supply's are for use anywhere in the world but you do need an adaptor for the roadrunner wall wart ( std US) and a standard IEC power cord (same as any regular computer power cable) for the Eagle PSU. I plugged it all in without the need for the instructions and everything worked fine. No tools are required. The roadrunner works by sticking a magnet on the platter and then using a Hall effect detector to time the speed of the platter. The tiny magnet has some tack on the underside so it went on the base of the platter and the sensor has a peel off backing which then sticks to the table itself. I didn't quite get it square when I stuck it on ( on my haste) so mine is not perfect but it works just fine. I didn't try to peel it off in case something went wrong. It's not beautiful but it's at the back of the platter so you can't see it anyway. With everything plugged in I then fired it up. The first thing I noted was that the roadrunner said the table was running at 31.4xx rpm and then over the next 5 or 10 seconds it adjusted the speed until I had 33.333 plus or minus a bit rpm. It seems that with my table I don't get a constant perfect 33.333 rpm. It always has a bit of wobble - plus or minus about 0.01 rpm. No idea how much of an error is normal for a belt drive TT. Whatever the case I now have an Aries 3 that to my ear runs at the right speed. I am very happy with the Eagle/roadrunner solution and would recommend this combination to anyone with a table that operates with an AC synchronous motor. The only caveat I can see is if there is not enough space under the platter for the magnet and the detector to fit. Of course the magnet could go on the outside edge of the platter with the sensor turned sideways somehow. Also I guess a magnet near the cartridge is not a good idea but on the big VPI platter it's not a problem and I can't see it being a problem for most others. Could it be better? It's a minor gripe but in my view the cable spaghetti is not great and it would be better if it could all be built into one box like the SDS. It no deal breaker though and since it's behind the table it's not a problem. Sorry about my crappy iPAD photos. Came in three boxes. All the supplied bits. You have to add an IEC power cable for your country and if you get the roadrunner you will also need a US power adaptor for the roadrunner wall wart power supply. The roadrunner option with its PSU. The Eagle power amp with its IEC universal power adaptor. You have to supply your own power cable to this. The two small units are about the size of a cigarette box while the eagle power amp is bigger but not huge - smaller than I thought from the photos on the Internet. It sits in your hand. Back of the three units Everything plugged in: cable spaghetti The tiny magnet that you stick to the platter base I didn't quite get the sensor in the right place in terms of being square with the centre of the platter but it still works fine. Note the streak of silver under the platter is the magnet approaching the sensor at 33.3 rpm The amp didn't fit on my equipment rack but the wall behind the rack turned out to be a perfect spot for it. Note the speed is not absolutely rock solid. I attribute this variation to the motor, belt and table not the PSU.
