  2. Post up your reviews of movies. Robot & Frank 10/10 This is high science fiction, it's the Asimov of scifi movies, from a time before scifi was space opera. It's exploring some beautifully complex and touching themes, it's multi layered, it's approachable. It's all class, every line every scene. Robot & Frank could make you cry and laugh, consider and care, but frankly if it doesn't you might as well be a robot. Feel free to include old movies, or the movie you watched tonight, or even, shock horror, the latest cinema release.
  3. Howdy all, Happy New Year! I thought I'd start a little side topic based on my movie watching over the Christmas break. I bought a nice little sub as self-given present, and then went on a... somewhat excessive (according to my better half) quest to find some material (mostly movies) that would test it out.. along with the other speakers in my home theatre. Now, you'd think in this age, that there are many fine movies that test out a subwoofer. But boy was I struggling a bit to find something that really "reaches deep", for more than a few moments, a scene, or even at all! So I "went to the all-high oracle of knowledge (google) for other people's suggestions. Many people suggested movies far too numerous to mention here. But after taking some of their advice, I'll outline what I watched: Jurassic Park is a classic, for the stomping of the T-Rex... ok, that has it's bassy moments. Star Wars.... (anything really) but a special mention goes to Ep II for the seismic charges. (The first thing I tested the sub on). U571 (Old now, but good atmospherics). House of Flying Daggers. (The drum scene is pretty good for bass, pity about the story). Pacific Rim... yes, there's some VERY nice bass here. Master & Commander. (I only have the DVD, but the cannons certainly have some punch to them). Thor I & II (Yep those are good ones) The Avengers... Good Bass. Lots of crunch. Captain America I & II. Some nice bass in all that.. but nothing really seems to stand out in my mind. Super 8.... yes... that was a train crashing in my home.... To my neighbourhood.... I'm sorry the sound disturbed you, but truth be told, I'm not sorry I did it! :~) Brave... I know, I was shocked too! Great atmospherics for the overall sound system too! Lord of the Rings trilogy... with special mention of the battle scenes in the Two Towers, and Return of the King. Good bass with the War Oliphants (Elephants) collapsing, and the catapaulted rocks. Letters from Iwo Jima. As far as the sounds of warfare can be considered "Nice". The Dark Knight... that's a fair whack of bass! The Matrix movies have some nice moments, especially with the EMP pulse and many fight scenes. Tropic Thunder (Please forgive my watching of Ben Stiller) but the explosion in the beginning is very cool. The latest Star Trek movies. Aside from the sound being great, I just couldn't help but think back to "Heroes" and muse "Why Sylar, your ears have grown so pointy!". However, for SHEER DEPTH, DURATION, AND IMPACT.... MY PERSONAL WINNER IS: The latest (2014) reboot of the Godzilla movie. A 12" sub is good... a 15" or bigger would be better! (Or multiple subs for a noticeable improvement). There's so much bass! Power plants collapsing, planes crashing, giant creatures fighting like Pacific Rim, but a bit bassier (yes, I know I didn't think that was possible) Go watch it, with the sound cranked, and you'll understand why! I'd love to hear what movies get your fillings rattled out! Also, what movies do you think has the most immersive sound? Love to hear your thoughts! Hamish.
  4. Hi Everyone! As a Canberra-based lad, I was directed from the introductions section to the Canberra based sub-forum. I think it's great people have gotten together for Christmas in July, but given the lack of activity in this section, I feel that maybe I can add a little something to this section to get it going. There are many audiophiles hiding in the greater Canberra area, and maybe I can encourage/aggravate people into adding their experiences/views here. Please don't take me too seriously, I bear no ill-will to any of you.. I'm just an irreverant kinda guy. I'd really like to start sub topics on some/all of the following, feel free to do so for whatever interests you: Experiences with local Hi-Fi retailers, such as Duratone, Kingston Hi-Fi, Miranda Hi-Fi, Millenium AV, (if all are still around) and others that I am sure I don't know about. The loaded questions: Where are the current Canberra retailers headed? Given the competition online from other Aussie cities, and abroad, where are we buying from and why? What do you use your A/V for? Movies? Music? Are you transitioning from one to the other? What are the current discounts available to use Canberra folks? (Perhaps to others interested in this section) Weird and Wacky configurations/ideas. For example: I've long been pondering the use of pre-outs on my receiver to have stereo (or surround) subs. If Yamaha has a two separate channels for sub output (left-right or front-back) on it's high end receivers, are subs (especially around th 60-80Hz or higher) so difficult to track back to the source? 7.1 surround sound with 7 identical floor-standing speakers... even for the centre. Experiences? Considerations? Utter terror to ask your wife/husband if you can do it? More than two subs? Sound proofing? DIY Speaker projects? Multi-zone/room installations, perhaps with in-ceiling/in-wall speakers? Outdoor setups? Things you've done to get HAF/WAF? How big is your AV Room? Problems you have found? Perhaps a leather-covered sofa is starting to resonate with your sound and causing all kinds of havoc? Have windows cracked? Done some re-flooring? Perhaps carpet or floorboards, did it help you? What do you listen to? MP3s/FLAC/Compressed Audio LPs Tape (Does anyone still use these?) CDs SACDs/Music DVDs, Blu-Ray Audio (I believe it's called "Pure Audio"?) Internet Radio, Digital Radio, or other signals the aliens use to encourage the wearing of Aluminium foil hats (just kidding). Any funny stories? Perhaps tragic stories involving small children and perhaps paper cones, a crayon, or lost toys that have mysteriously migrated into a speaker port? Any morals/solutions that may help others to avoid such issues? Where do Canberra folks go for A/V repairs? Re-coiling speakers Blown amps TV/Projector repairs Any known issues with certain makes/models. Things to avoid AV heartache. Cold Canberra Nights for A/V enthusiasts Helpful reading material? Perfect music/movie/whatever for the current weather. Crazy AV ideas to ponder? I guess what I'm really asking for is "What's on your mind?" I've just had a few suggestions that are by no means "written in stone". All the best! Hamish.
