  1. Audio Action / Diy Night 7:45pm Wednesday 13th December Willis Room, City of Whitehorse Offices Maroondah Highway (Whitehorse Road), Nunawading Melway Map 48 Ref G9 Contact: 9579 0936 Once a year we get to showcase equipment that club members have built themselves. Over the years we've had everything from DIY streaming sources made from a Raspberry PI computer board, to valve and solid-state amplifiers, preamps, and speakers. We have some incredibly talented people in the club, and I'm sure all would be more than happy to provide guidance if you were contemplating building your own piece of kit. For this year's DIY night we'll be demonstrating two systems, both with bookshelf speakers and solid-state amplifiers. The first system features a very unique amplifier from a DIY regular. Alan has made a battery-powered integrated amplifier, and we're not talking about a couple of watts. This amp has a 50W output and runs from a large rechargeable battery pack in a separate enclosure. We'll be partnering Alan's amp with Alistair's 2-way bookshelf speakers using Seas metalcone drivers and housed in bamboo ply cabinets. The second system includes Rick's bookshelf speakers. These were originally demo'ed to the MAC in 2018, in active guise. Rick has now made a passive crossover and upgraded the bass drivers to the SB Acoustics Satori 'Textreme' drivers. Textreme is a woven carbon fibre material that has a distinctive 'checkerboard' pattern and is said to offer many advantages over traditional woven fibre cones of the past. Rick's speakers will be partnered with Alistair's solid-state preamp and 100W Mosfet amplifier. They are a medium sized bookshelf 2-way ported design, with 16 litres internal volume. The enclosure is made of 13 'ribs' of 25mm bamboo trans-laminated together. It is braced internally with contiguous material to the enclosure walls and is very rigid. The internal ribs are contoured individually to dampen internal resonances. Internally they are damped with natural wool, and the port is tuned to 38Hz. They are 4 ohm nominal impedance and 88db efficiency, so call for some authority and current delivery from the amplifier. It should be interesting to hear these in action! The source for the night will be an Oppo BDP-105 Bluray / media player with songs loaded on a hard-drive. There will also be several static displays of club member's DIY projects, so come along, it will be an interesting night! Members can bring static displays of club member's DIY projects, so it will be an interesting night! 2. Annual DIY Meeting 7:45pm Wednesday 14th December Willis Room, City of Whitehorse Offices Maroondah Highway (Whitehorse Road), Nunawading Melway Map 48 Ref G9 Contact: 9579 0936 This month's DIY night will feature two systems, one 'little' and one 'large'. The first system to be demonstrated consists of Alistair's 70W ClassD amplifier, featuring a Texas Instruments TPA3251 chipamp on his own 'done-right' PCB layout. This is an entirely DIY design, designed and constructed from scratch no bought-in modules! The amplifier is partnered with a pair of 2way bookshelf speakers using Seas metal-cone drivers and housed in bamboo ply cabinets. They have external crossovers as all DIY projects are never finished and this allows easy tweaking of components. The second 'big' system includes Alan's 100W valve amplifier featuring a pair of KT150 output valves. Alan has recently reconfigured this amplifier (It was originally shown at last year's DIY night) and it is sure to be sounding better than ever. The speakers are Alistair's 3way monitors, inspired by the classic British Harbeth / ATC look. They include a Raal ribbon tweeter, a 5 inch Audio Technology midrange, and a custom built 12inch AE Speakers bass driver. This is essentially the TD12S model, but fitted with a dustcap rather than a phase plug. These were originally shown at the 2017 DIY night, but were brand-new and the drivers had not broken in yet. They are now finished and sounding considerable smoother and should partner well with the big valve amp. The source for the night will be an Oppo BDP-105 bluray/media player with songs loaded on a hard-drive. There will also be several static displays of club member's DIY projects, so it will be an interesting night! 3. Just like to share with you guys some excellent quality but cheap speaker cables I made. These were made for around $60 buying components from various sellers. The cable being used is a Canare 4S11 cable (good quality made in Japan stuff). This is same as what can be bought from bluejeanscable.com. I sourced 6m od the Canare cable from Cliff electronics half way from Brissy to Goldy($6 a metre, I got 6m). The sawtooth banana plugs and spade connectors were bought through ebay seller "motho"(selby accoustics). This shot is after I've put the connectors on and got some heatshrink around the twisted ends.(obviously). Bought some nice snakeskin coloured techflex (1/2" 25ft) from ebay seller "furryletters". Put the techflex over the cable and add a bit more heatshrink on the ends and wallla... We have a nice 3m pair of excellent speaker cables. As for sound quality thes are excellent. If anyone has read my previous threads of diy speaker cables of various types I would put these in the same league as my diy cat 6 ones and above any others I have made. These have lower capacitance than the cat 6 ones and slightly higher inductance (measures static). These are easy to make and are nice and fllexible unlike the diy cat 6's which take a large amount of time to make. Spade and banaplugs are a big plus as well. The 25ft of techflex has left me with about 1.4m left over. Enough for a diy digital interconnect I guess. By the way if anyone wants some good acoustic foam for bass traps etc, Cliff electronics has 2.4m x 1.2m sheets for around $60. Think I might have to get some. Regards Simon
  4. Hi guys, I am considering getting a new crossover component for a set of speakers I bought a year ago. The manufacturer suggests that soldering the 6 wires onto the new crossover will be fairly straightforward. Aside from (a) asking for help (in progress) and (b) watching YouTube videos...any tips/suggestions? The speakers are 3-way floorstanders. Cheers, Neil
  5. Item: DIY record cleaning machine project Location:Marrickville / Enmore, Sydney Price: $70 OnO! Item Condition: well it's a project, either buy the parts or take the whole thing, (just moved it to the shed as the Mrs hit the roof at me buying yet another RCM) Reason for selling: bought a Kiwi Record cleaning machine at last, lazy, this one has no motor, purely manual, could attach one but never did.. Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Extra Info: just want it gone, too many RCM's, buy it before I rip the VPi parts out (hardly used, no noticeable wear) and dump the stand, unsure whether to keep platter, motor housing (just using as a manual spindle, not strong enough to keep spinning while vacuum is running) included is just the table itself, not the cool Damned picture disc, not the weight/clamp, (you will need something to help spin the table, hockey puck's are popular with these manual machines, or make something..similar) or the vacuum cleaner, can tell you my secret recipe for fluid but it's the same that others use.. (sorry for the delay in posting the pictures) Pictures:
  6. I am looking for some pictures and ideas for DIY masking for my screen. I first bought a 135" scope screen and zoom my epson projector to fill the screen, was pretty happy with it till I found watching 16:9 movies or music videos is really hard as the projector doesnt have lens memory I have to manually zoom it. So I bought a 16:9 screen now I can play both content but the problem is when playing scope content the top and bottom black bars which really annoys me. I now have both of these screens and I am happy to keep either one of those which I can make a perfect cost effective masking system. I know many of you guys did DIY masking here, so if you can share some picture and ideas that would be really great. Changing projector with a lens memory is an expensive option and my current epson is only a year old. Thanks in advance.
  7. I am considering building some open baffle speakers. I have never built anything like this before and have found some kits available which supposedly supply everything for you. These are the ones, http://www.pureaudioproject.com/cube-10-open-baffle-speakers/ I would be interested in opinions on a project like this and also opinions on options or alternatives to this product. While I am a fan of high efficiency full range speakers, I have never heard anything like this product and also would like opinions on what the end product may sound like, or where it might excel or lack in performance when in use. Thanks in advance for any advice. Steve
  8. Hi All I have just purchased an intel NUC as a HTPC for our spare plasma TV and hence created a requirement for half decent sound system to go with it. I have a DIY bookshelf speaker left over that I am hoping to utilize. ( Details below ) I plan to buy a bluetooth or USB soundcard then combine both stereo channels to mono Then the plan is to use an active crossover and bi-amp the speaker. Now I have no experience with Class D / Class T amps, my sound requirements are modest, I really just want to beat the bose/logitech bluetooth speakers out there. So just as long as the Class D isn't regrettable I'm be happy with that, the same with a switchmode PSU. Class A/B with linear supply would also be fine. Low standby power would be nice. My aim is to keep cost low and size small. So $200ish for PSU and dual mono AMP. I can pirate parts (PSU) from an Altronics kit (K5173) that I have built previously. It has a 300VA (45V + 45V) toroidal and the PSU rectifies to give +- 70V DC. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm happy to do my own research but a push in the right direction would be very helpful Thanks John ============================================================================== Woofer rated @ 60W RMS & Tweeter @ 100W RMS http://www.htguide.com/forum/showthread.php?13154-RS180-Modula-MT-you-asked-for-it-you-got-it!

  10. Hi Mates, Dan here in Ecuador, retired from Chicago in 2011, I joined this forum to get info on the SL Pluto. I was searching around for DIY components to build a 5.1 HT system and stumbled on the Pluto. As importing is expensive here in Ecuador, DIY is the only way to go. But I want to experiment with a mini-dsp since I already have good amps and don't care to build new ones. Plus I want to know if any of you guys have experimented with the dimensions/drivers of the Pluto....... Talk soon, Dan
  11. Hey guys, I don't know if this is the right category for my question but if it isnt please move it, Everyday on my way to school I like to listen to my music out loud with my friends, I used to do it with my phone but it ends up hard to hear especially with traffic and such, I made a pair of logitech ls11 speakers portable by powering them off batteries and putting them in a cardboard box, They were alright volume(About as loud as my phone) and had a bit more quality than my phone, But they ran out of batteries within an hour of use and that was getting inefficient and expensive. So i've decided I want to undertake a project where i'm going to use a 12v sealed lead acid battery and use it to power some speakers and a sub. So heres what I need. *Speaker, Preferably a full range car speaker of some sort *Subwoofer, Needs to provide good bass at loud volumes *LOUD, Most important bit, Needs to be quite loud that can be heard easily over traffice with good quality and bass *Portable, Needs to last for atleast 2-3 hours a day and be light. * Size, Needs to fit in my schoolbag with a bit of room to spare. *Rechargeble *Enclosure for all the speakers This is my schoolbag, It's a Nike one its not too small but its not very big eitherhttp://sportitemsstore.com/product/nike-backpack-bag-sand-blue-athletic-school-gym-travel-laptop-bags-ba4378-414/ I can build my own enclosure. So does anyone have any tips or anything? I was thinking 4 inch car speakers and a 6 inch sub? It needs to be around $100-120 And available in Australia Cheers
  12. How do you turn a concrete shoebox into a project recording studio - with no money for acoustic treatments? This is the room - concrete floor and ceiling, brick rear wall, and noise insulating sidewalls made from Durapanels? The sound of the untreated room is very bad - pronounced slap echoes in all directions, long reverberation time of about 1.5 sec, poor speech intelligibility across the room. Here are a couple of examples how to DIY cheap room treatments. (I will update this as I take more pictures). Sidewall diffuser panels For the two sidewall we designed a total of 12 identical 1D BAD diffusor panels. They are roughly 1.2m by 0.6m large and made from 12mm MDF with pine corner posts to stabilise the thin MDF frames and allow for safe fastening. Note how the corner posts protrude from the rear. The diffusionproperties are achieved by a Maximum Length Sequence (MLS) facing made from 39mm wide and 3mm thick MDF strips. The absorbing material with which the frames will be filled is 90mm thick polyester fibre material rated at R2.5 (and thus has a suitable flow resistivity). Once the absorbing material is mounted, the entire frame will be wrapped with a thin fabric to give a nice surface finish. The front of the diffuser frames sits 200 mm in front of the walls to increase the absorption at lower frequencies as much as possible - thus the protruding corner posts. The material costs are very small as MDF, pine boards and polyester insulation batts can be purchased very cheaply. The real cost is in the blood, sweat and tears shed while cutting all the wood and mounting the frames and facings All 12 sidewall diffusers ready for mounting the absorbing materials: A closeup of the facing forming the 1D BAD MLS sequence. If anybody is interested in the physics behind it - Jamie Angus' AES papers on the subject are worth reading.
  13. I have been thinking about experimenting with a different DIY design for some XLR cables. I have a large drum of 2-core shielded mic-cable at home, I used to use it for line level runs for live sound, and I have a fair bit left over. My idea is to use 3 x 2.5m lengths for each speaker (I have a pair of SGR audio CX4F active speakers), and connect BOTH cores of each runs to the +, - and GND of the XLR end, and also group the braided shield together (but not to the termination). My other idea is to cross cores in each run, so <+ GND>/<- +>/<GND -> and then have each matching core terminate together on the pins of the XLR end. Thoughts? I may just do this is an experiment anyway, but some feedback would be excellent. Also yes, I know these cables are not in the same 'league' as the speakers, I am still deciding if I even want to get ridiculous cables or not.

  15. Melbourne Audio Club monthly meeting - Annual DIY night. 8pm Wednesday 18th December, visitors welcome. Willis Room, City of Whitehorse Offices Maroondah Highway (Whitehorse Road), Nunawading Melway Map 48 Ref G9 Contact: 9437 1249 It’s that time of year again when the DIY group get to show off their Hi Fi projects at the December General Meeting. It looks like another busy year for the group as they have managed to put together three different systems for the night. There will be a showcase of DIY components that will be presented, everything from 200w solid state mono blocks, a 3 way speaker system with 12†bass drivers, a couple of chip amps, and a pair of ‘Bamboo’ speakers. Now that sounds very interesting? The program for the night will run the same as last year. All three systems will be played before the coffee break. With each system having an allotted time of no more than 30 minutes. Each presenter will get to explain their gear and play several CD’s. This should see us finish the session by 10:00pm, allowing all the members on the night to hear the three systems. The earlier ending to the nights program, will give us a chance to ask the talented DIY individuals about their gear. We all know how passionate members can be when it comes to building their own equipment. 18. Howdy fellow DIYers, I've been having a little muck around with WinIsd to help me design a new sub. WAF has me restricted to re-purposing an existing piece of furniture to house the sub, this has left the internal volume of the box to be approx 200L. The room is 200m3 and has several large openings to other rooms. HT to music ratio is about 60/40, so the sub needs to err toward the HT side (Mrs Jone5y likes bass). I'm unable to the project file but the design was for a vented sub that utilises the Mach 5 UXL 18" driver in a 200L enclosure tuned to 18Hz. 1000w input signal, Butterworth Highpass @ 10Hz, Parametric eq set to 3dB gain @ 20Hz. Square port of 50cm (width of box) x 9cm, folded to reach length of 190cm - seems very high. My main questions are a) have I got it totally wrong, will this driver/box combo fulfil my requirements c) is it overkill d) what other options would you suggest? The end goal is to pair the sub to either the VAF dc-x35's, Troel's DTQWT, or Paul's HE2. Budget for the sub is 1k Any help would be much appreciated
  19. I received notification of this beast today http://www.infrasonic.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65&products_id=181. I'll leave the implementation (Sealed/Ported/EQ) to those more knowledgable than myself, suffice to say a 21" driver with 34mm x max should move a whole lotta air and be capable of some serious SPL. I can't attach the .wdr file but can provide a link for download for those who are interested.
  20. I have a pair of Mission Argonaut floor standing speakers from the late eighties and I’m going to attempt to make a book shelf speakers from the drivers due WAF (doesn’t like floor standing speakers). Here is a picture of the speakers. Mine were grey but I have since painted them black. The idea is to make a two way bookshelf unit by re-using the tweeter, 8†woofer, crossover and terminals in a ported config and then adding a DIY sub. From the research I have done the drivers are Vifa units (made for mission) and seem to be crossed over at ~ 2khz. Response goes down to 40hz. Vifa bass driver is stamped with model: P21WO-22 and Part number: R764/83-LFU-P21. I emailed Mission UK to requesting speaker parameters but didn’t receive a response. My queries for this project are: What is the easiest way to find the parameters of the bass driver? Software to design a ported box? – OR - Should I stick with a sealed enclosure (future sub add-on)? Any issues using the exiting cross over? Any other variables I need to consider? I was going to buy a MTM bookshelf kit but these speakers are still fine and were expensive for the day so I thought I’d save some cash and give this a go. It would be a shame to put them in the garage. All it should cost me is my time and some MDF. If the project fails I can still mount the drivers back in the original enclosure. Cheers!
  21. Hello stereo.net.au and thank you for welcoming into your excellent forums. I have an old but nice-sounding set of two-way speakers. I believe one of the tweeters is broken and I am interested in learning how to select and install a replacement driver. However, I am conscious of not wasting forum-members' time. Therefore, before I make my post-proper, I was hoping to get some help with these preliminary questions. Hopefully this will save annoyance later on. I am a complete speaker noob but have some experience with electric guitar wiring as well as being familiar with the basic principles of audio. 1. Is this the right forum to post this question or should I be posting in DIY audio? 2. Is there a sticky or otherwise good tutorial site detailing the basics of speaker/driver anatomy/function/repair that is recommended? I've done some searching but everything I've found has been either too specific, too detailed or not detailed enough. 3. I've looked inside and have identified some specifications written on the tweeter, crossover and woofer. Aside from the impedance, however, these are meaningless to me (nothing looks obviously to be indicating wattage or sensitivity). What are the important parameters I should be looking out for that would guide driver selection? 4. I have taken photos of everything and measured the tweeter. Aside from this (and the details in point 3) is there anything that would be helpful in making this post? The speaker brand is obscure but I have found some details about it from these forums (different model, though). Many thanks for your help in advance. Kind regards, Nick
  22. Item: Pair of Raal 70-10D ribbons and BG Neo10 mids Location: Sydney Price: $550 for the Raals, $300 for the Neo10s Item Condition: Used, but perfect Reason for selling: Too many drivers Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: Pictures: Howdy all. I recently bought a pair of the justly famous Raal 70-10D tweeters from a chap in the States. They were new and unused. I've hooked them up temporarily to my open baffles, but decided to go with dipole tweeters. They are mint in the box with the foam pads. I also have a pair of Bohlender-Graebener Neo10 midrange drivers. These are exceptional planar mids. One has been hooked up, the other not. You can pick up in Surry Hills or I will ship via courier.
  23. Hi, I've have had my Cheviots for about 8 or so years. In this time I've had some nice speakers in my system but I always come back to the Cheviots for the music they produce. My Cheviots with the HPD315 drivers have finally succumbed to the inevitable and now the foam surround needs replacing. I'm very keen to use original tannoy parts and it appears Speakerbits in Melbourne sell these. But from research on the net and also contacting Lockwood in the UK it seems the original surrounds have cutouts for screws etc whereas the Speakerbits ones don't. Tannoy emailed me to say they only sell recone kits not surrounds and it appears these too have the cutouts. I know speakerbits are a reputable company but it only states on their site they are genuine factory replacements rather than Tannoy factory which is kind of open ended in my thinking. Does anyone have any experience on this front? Maybe I should stop being so fussy? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Legselevens
  24. Item: Pair of BG Neo10 mids Location: Sydney Price: $275 Item Condition: Used Reason for selling: Too many drivers Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: Pictures: Howdy all. I have a pair of Bohlender-Graebener Neo10 midrange drivers. These are exceptional planar mids. Many think they are the best mids you can buy. That is debatable, but without doubt they are best open baffle mids you can buy. Naturally, you can't get them in Australia. They are $250 each from the States. I bought four to use in my DIY dipoles, but two is enough. One has been hooked up, the other not. I'll throw in the mounting plates from Meniscus. http://meniscusaudio.com/face-plate-p-1362.html You can pick up in Surry Hills or I will ship via courier.
