Yes I am selling my wonderful AM RT-2 preamp. For those of you who have been fortunate enough to hear/use AM amps in their system, you'll know what this amp is all about. It's one step down from the 3 box RT-3 flagship, but if you've had the pleasure of hearing it you'll know its quite stunning in it's ability to bring music into your room if the rest of your system is up to it. The build is amazing. Inside and out, its a work of art. The one thing you'll notice straight away is this amp is not one that will look old or dated in a few years. It also feels like a truck could drive over it and wouldn't even scratch it - the workmanship and quality is absolutely amazing. The power supply is huge, making some power amps look puny. Internally it's wired up with silver wire, which is a step up from its brother the RT-1 which uses copper wiring. And no before you ask I don't hear any shrillness, brightness or dryness. Just a detailed, smooth, dynamic and open sound. And the sound emerges from a black background... I don't know, I could start spouting superlatives... I’ve compared it with well respected preamps around the same price, but what you notice with this AM preamp is that it is sooooo quiet. You don't realise that amps are noisy till you (don't) hear a really great amp. Then the sound just appears in front of you unhindered without any noise or grain... and the dynamics are tremendous. They're unforced, just amazing. Hard to explain till you really hear it. It's a huge step up from anything I had used previously. Another huge benefit is that I can play my music at low volume and it fills the room, it doesn’t shrink away. So late night listening is totally doable and you’ll still feel/hear the energy in the music - not many preamps will give you this consistency throughout the volume range, most just shrink the soundstage and dynamics as you turn the volume down. This preamp can mix it with some very lofty company - Audio Note M8, Esoteric C-03, Nagra Jazz... But I'll stop waxing lyrical about this preamp, and refer you to these reviews... (and yes, donation to SNA upon successful sale of this beautiful pre-amp) Oh and before I go, I recently purchased a pair of Sovtek 6H30Pi EB Cryo Matched Pair tubes. I've put only a couple of hours on them, but honestly couldn't hear a difference, so would suggest the original valves still have plenty of life in them. Will throw them in to sweeten the deal. And for interstate shoppers - yes I have the original boxes so will arrive safely, but may cost a bit to ship as this 2 box preamp literally will come in 2 boxes, and its damn heavy. In others words eight point five tenths versus ten tenths – but for a lot, lot less money, if you want to characterise it that way. Think Burson squared. The canned TVCs are braced in massively machined aluminum retainers. So are the output and power transformers. The vertical tube board mounts its super-tight sockets to a massive aluminum plate whose back side doubles as mount for the associated circuit board. The grooved heavy-duty top cover locks into rabbeted place with eight long bolts passing with perfect fit through the overkill corner blocks... Whilst one might rightly question whether this type of build is necessary—I don't think that Jeff Rowland shoppers would though—there's no question that Audio Music's designer is an extremist when it comes to mechanical construction... The first sonic surprise was just how loud the R-T1 sounded at micro volumes. We're all familiar with hifi's mandate that escalating volumes ought to only go louder, not change with band-specific compression, stridency, brightness, hardness or other nonlinearities. Hardly anyone talks about the inverse. Things shouldn't collapse, shrink or disappear as volumes fade. It's probably a fortuitous combo of current drive, overall system resolution and speaker responsiveness that delays the inevitable sonic shrinkage which accompanies counter clockwise on the dial. Old-fashioned loudness controls were meant to compensate for HF/LF loss at pianissimo levels but none of today's high-end gear has them. Here the R-T1 set a new high in low. It maintained truly phenomenal intelligibility and substance all the way down into the very ambient noise floor of the room itself... If you think on it, there's something very wrong with being held hostage by systems which only satisfy when played loud. Sometimes loud isn't appropriate or possible. Sometimes you're not in the mood for it. Should you settle for a lesser experience then or, worse, opt to not listen at all? If you relate, the Audio Music preamp up-ends such silliness (obviously your particular amp/speaker interface must be capable of transferring massive signal cut into proper fullness and detail - and many speakers just aren't). Very likely Fang's magnetic volume controls had something to do with this due to how effective their lot get as one turns them down. The upshot is that contrary to popular lore where tube circuits are inherently noisier than transistor equivalents to come second on resolving power, on low-down intelligibility with body the R-T1 thoroughly whupped ass on my Esoteric C-03 preamp and even outweighed my Nagra Jazz in the bass... Conclusion. The R-T1 should be of particular interest to people of either hi-eff systems where deep attenuation is the order of the day; or those who routinely listen quietly but presently belabour a significant loss of substance whenever they do. Here the transformer-based volume controls excel at maximizing drive at very low signal voltages. It really was just a matter of time. Reference Chi-Fi has arrived. Pickup preferred (thus a buyer picking up will be given preference). Extra Info: Here are a very hard to come by matching pair (sequential serials) of StereoKnight M-100 valve (tube) monoblocks. I had originally purchased them off a gentleman here in Victoria, and since then they have been lovingly and sparingly used, as well as upgraded and some expense. They are in near perfect condition. They have solid aluminium cases (I've never seen a build quality like them - really!), and there are only the odd tiny marks. I have tried my best to photograph all aspects of them. Information can be somewhat difficult to track down, however for those in the know, these are built by the man now responsible for Audio Music (AM AUDIO) - Mr.Fang. I am very happy to say that he is easy to contact and will provide any information and support needed. He stands by his products, and they are massively over-engineered, so should last a lifetime! Note that, having discussed with Mr.Fang, you could use KT-120's in these beasts, making over 120 watts per side. Wow. Not that you'll need more power........Note that the newer Tung-sol KT-150's won't work in these according to Mr Fang (but now we're just getting greedy!). These beasts, irrespective, will most certainly lend themselves to tube rolling, given how madly revealing they are! At night, they look like two small cities all lit up. Really cool. NOTE: I am also happy to do a deal on the full set of KT88's (and some other spares) I replaced which could be used as spares (Electron Tube KT94). Just ask! I have been using these amps as follows: Pre - Wyred4Sound STP-SE Power - Stereoknight M-100 valve monoblocks (via XLR in true balanced configuration) - I preferred ~100+W into 8ohms compared to ~200+W into 4ohms, but other systems will vary. speakers - Osborn Epitome (approx 90dB efficiency) sources - various, including hi-res digital and vinyl I must say these amps are truly extraordinary. I've never heard more beautiful bass. They simply don't suffer from slow or muddy bass. They are glorious in this sense. Clarity is superb, and separation and soundstage blows me away. If you're a jazz fan, I'd look no further (your favourite female vocal will make you shiver. Start with a quality vinyl pressing of "What's New?" by Helen Merrill and you'll melt. Having said that, I have a very eclectic taste in music (from jazz to classical to indie rock to heavy metal to 60's rock and back again....) and these amps produce it all with aplomb! Anyone looking for high-powered (and yes, we're talking up to over 200wpc fully balanced into 4ohms if preferred!!), these are hard to pass up. They'll drive almost anything easily. For those in the know, any audiophile tube amps producing this sort of drive usually cost well over the price of these! They really do respond to a truly balanced end-to-end setup, so fire up that balanced Preamp and invest in some quality XLR cables (I preferred a copper/silver mix to all silver, however (as always) each system and ear is different)!! I have all the original boxing and packaging. I worry about posting, even with proper factory packaging, but can do if needed. Tubes may need to be removed and padded up). You will need to get your own power cords (although I can throw in some cheapies, however I'd recommend something to match their quality). I have been very loving of them. They have always been allowed to warm up prior to use (they really come on song after about an hour ideally). They will definitely benefit from a couple of heavy & solid isolation platforms to sit on. They certainly sound a whole lot better (especially mid range) with the PrimaLuna (silver edition) tubes, compared to the set of KT94's that came with them. All my gear runs off a power conditioner. Please note that the power output needle on (I seem to recall the right channel) one amp does not work. It was not working when I got them (I am the second owner), and does not affect sound of course. I have not looked into getting it fixed, however I am sure this could easily be done. I may get the opportunity to have it looked at next week if time permits. You'll note the little doors on the sides of each amp. They come off with an allen key (supplied), and you need a basic multimeter (I'll throw in with the sale) in order to bias each tube. There is a bias screw next to each corresponding power tube (see pics). It's really easy, and according to Mr.Fang you can decide your output preferences. These amps can produce a lot more power, but it's up to the listener what their preferences are. Notably, the PrimaLunas went in and needed very little (if any) bias adjusting (ie. a matched Octet!). http://www.primaluna-usa.com/tube-rolling These amps go very easy on tubes (if standard biasing is applied), so they should last ages. These monsters are big and heavy and beautiful: - around 30kg each - packaging adds 2kg each - size (each in cm) is 46w, 22h, 30w - colour is silver aluminium with clear perspex lids I will happily arrange for an audition only for those truly intending to buy (amps are currently not in use). I live in inner-north of Melbourne. Price will be formalised before this happens (I don't want to spend ages working through critical listening, only for someone to try to lowball me. I am sure you all understand (and I will negotiate on price if required and reasonable), but it's happened too many times before). I am always very light-on for time (it took me 3 months after having stored the amps to get around to this ad!), so please do your own research. Price is negotiable, however it reflects age, condition, use, rarity and a $1400 tube set! Don't let them pass you by if you've been thinking of high powered tubes but the prices have held you back. Given this sort of quality and the bliss into which you will plunge, they represent tube heaven at this price range in my opinion. Happy listening! Mat
G'day all I have a Tivoli Audio Model One B1 radio, that is ~18months old. It has developed a most-annoying-hum. It is so annoying, i cant stand to listen to the radio. I have been to the Tivoli website, with no info there about the problem existing. So, has anyone else had this problem and know how to fix it, or is it another situation where it costs more to have a service agent repair than replace. If you know, should I contact Tivoli direct, or via the retailer? Things should last MUCH MUCH longer than this.
