  1. Hi All, I'm very much a newbie when it comes to turntables so I'm looking for a little advice. I've got my hands on a Toshiba (Aurex) SR-Q550 turntable from a now passed family member and would like to get back into playing some vinyl with it. From what I've read on the net it seems to be a reasonable quality turntable from the early '80s with a mid-mass arm. The turntable still appears to have the original cartridge & stylus but I'm looking to purchase a suitable replacement + a phono preamp to connect it up to my existing '90s vintage gear. Some suitable cartridges I've read about through various forums include Audio-Technica's AT95E or AT100E, Shure M97xE, Ortofon Super OM 10 or 2M Red. Anybody have any thoughts on these or other cartridges that may suit? In terms of phono preamps, I've shortlisted the following grouped by similar price points: - Cambridge Audio CP2 v Vincent PHO-8 v Graham Slee Gram Amp 2 'Communicator' - Graham Slee Gram2 Amp 2 SE v Dared LP1 v Vincent PhO-701 Would it be worth purchasing something from the 2nd group based on the turntable quality or is it wasted money? Thanks in advance for any advice.

  4. Item: Air Tight PC-1 Cartridge Location: Sydney Price: $3400 firm. RRP $8500 USD Item Condition: Excellent about 3-400 hours Reason for selling: Not used Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, Bank TT A fabulous cartridge in excellent condition! One of the best. Air Tight Wins The Absolute Sound's Golden Ear Award for 2007! The Air Tight PC-1 MC Cartridge Sets New Standards for LP Playback! Combining incredible dynamics, amazing detail retrieval and a sense of true musicality, the Air Tight PC-1 Moving Coil Phono Cartridge is one of the world’s finest designs. A “work-in-progress” for over 30 years, the new Air Tight PC-1 has set a new standard for the reproduction of analog recordings. The PC-1 is capable of stunning dynamic range with extremely high resolution; achieving exquisite detail reproduction while preserving the natural warmth and musicality that all analog lovers crave. The perception of the original recorded event is virtually unparalleled. A “High Output/Low Impedance” design, the PC-1 is an exemplary design that uses a proprietary magnet material in the generator, allowing a remarkable reduction in coil windings (reducing the “loss” of fine detail) yet still producing a very useable 0.6mV output. After 30 years, the dream has been realized! “The Air Tight PC-1, TAS’ 2006 Phono Cartridge of the year award-winner, is the best yet in nearly every aspect of phonograph reproduction-the most complete. As I said in Issue 170, the PC-1 isn’t simply a slight improvement over what came before it; it is a leap forward in moving-coil design. Well worth its asking price!” - Jonathan Valin, The Absolute Sound, Golden Ear Ward Winner, August 2007 Output Voltage: 0.6 mV at 1kHz 5cm/sec. Channel Balance: <0.5dB at 21kHz Stylus Tip: 3um X 30um semi-line contact Weight: 12g Tracking Force Range: 2.0 to 2.2g Internal Impedance: 2.5 ohms Frequency Response: 10-50,000 Hz Crosstalk: >30db @1kz Pins: Rhodium-plated polished Cantilever: Boron Core Material: SH-uX Magnet: Neodynium #50

The album has been meticulously remixed in stereo from the original four-track masters, faithfully guided by the original, Beatles-preferred George Martin mono mix. The three deluxe editions feature between 13 and 33 alternative takes and instrumental versions - most never heard by the general public. The super deluxe edition also features a 144-page hardcover book, a previously unreleased documentary on the album from 1992 and 5.1 BluRay audio surround sound mix of the album and selected bonus tracks. > regards Ian

  7. Item: Approx 80 Vinyl LPs, mostly from the 70’s and 80’s bands. Location: Melbourne Oakleigh Price: $500 ono for the lot. Prefer not to split Item Condition: Varies - some are unplayed , most are used and were last played 28 years ago Reason for selling: Just sold my 3 turntables on SNA this week, hard to play vinyl travelling full time in a motorhome! Payment Method: Pickup - Cash Only Extra Info: This is largely my personal collection from my youth prior and during Uni in the late 70’s early 80’s (when great bands were full of talented musos) before I went cold turkey on HiFi in late 80’s. Have been stored ever since 1990. Also included are some unplayed Sheffield Labs direct to disc vinyl, that I bought to play on my upgraded Linn LP12 but I never got the vinyl bug unlike many, and they stayed unplayed. Pot luck Pictures: I am time poor (preparing to move out of house permanently end of next weekend) so haven’t got the energy to photograph/catalogue each LP. Sorry. I just want to get rid of them in one sale and get another ‘thing’ out of the house so I don’t have to pay storage. There are roughly 80 LPs.

  10. Hi, was considering getting a cheap turntable and looking for advice. I don't yet have a budget in mind. I *have* money - but am likely to use a turntable infrequently enough that there's no need to go above an entry level system. BUT I hear about how there are a lot of entry level systems being sold ATM that have the same basic components rebranded and how I really don't want to get one of those. Any suggestions and advice for young players? There's a store near me with a second hand 18mo, professionally refurbed Rega Perormance Pack + Rega RP1 going for $350 - wondering if anyone is familiar with this one? It will be connected to a pair of Mission 796 stereo speakers + Yamaha sub driven by Denon 540BT (for now, may upgrade at some point though it's actually surprisingly good considering what I paid!)
  11. I have just finished cataloging my late brother's Vinyl collection and will intend selling it in the near future. Apart from the 492 Albums (537 individual records), the collection is quite varied and I must admit that even though I was teenager in the 70s there is still a bunch of stuff that I had never heard of. Even more interesting was that he was obviously a big fan of the Rolling Stones / Lou Reed and others of that ilk, his collection also includes Orchestral music including Brahms. My biggest laugh , however, was finding a children's album "Games and songs to play on your birthday" by Patsy Biscoe! Anyone seen a more varied collection? Also, I would welcome any advice as to how to sell such a collection. 15. Item: Ryan Adams Ashes & Fire EU Pressing Location: Redfern Price: $50 Item Condition: Near mint/as new Reason for selling: Double Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Bank Transfer Only Extra Info: A beautiful sounding album, a must for his fans. According to an article I read, Ryan Adams said: "I played acoustic on all of them and sang and played live to tape. We recorded the album ALL 100 percent ANALOG (2″ tape mixed to 1/4″). A computer didn’t touch this album. It has very few overdubs..." I first bought the US pressing and thought its sound was fine but slightly muddy. Then I heard someone commented the EU MPO pressing being sonically superior. Just at the end of last year, I started to search for it but this first UK/EU MPO pressing has proven quite hard to get. Most of the places I have looked sell the US pressing. I purchased one from Amazon UK (then £28.90) which was listed limited edition, due to the high price I expected the UK/EU deluxe box but what I received was the exact US single LP I already have. So I returned it and get a refund. I then purchased a copy from Amazon Germany. The same thing happened and again, I returned it! I then bought it from a seller on Discogs at a higher price. At least now I could get the seller to send me a picture and make sure that it is, in fact, a Made in the EU, MPO pressing (see picture). I bought two copies just in case I got a noisy one, but they both played very quietly with only a few very minor surface noise. Yes, the sonic is far superior to the US pressing and the effort was worth it. *Selling at the price I have paid $50. *Will post at buyers expense or pick up. Pictures:

  25. G’day all, I have a 1977/78 Linn Sondek LP12 and although I’m highly tempted, I don’t want to do any upgrades (again). Instead, I want to change to a simpler turntable which isn’t upgradable, to remove any ‘upgrade-itis’ and just be happy with what I have. Don’t get me wrong, I like the turntable and how it sounds, but I can’t help but be sucked into the plethora of (mostly expensive) upgrade options, and I envy all those people with their Klydes, Keels, Radikals and Ovakills! I’d like opinions as to whether or not I’ll get better performance for equal (or a bit more) money, by selling the Linn and buying something else - like a Funk Firm Vector V. I haven’t listened to one yet - I want to assess my options first and seek opinions, but it appeals to me because it’s potentially an endgame-component to begin with, which doesn’t tempt you down an upgrade path. It doesn’t have an external PSU (or require an upgrade to one), has a DC motor, and has a simple speed switch on the turntable itself. I am open to having the ability to upgrade the tonearm over time. An all-in-one unit without external components is a preference - I’m trying to trim down my ‘bits’. So my question is, what is my Linn worth and is there a turntable/arm that will better it for similar money? I don’t have the budget to go spending heaps more. Linn specs: Original Afromosia non-braced plinth, bearing, motor, spot welded sub-chassis, etc. Overhauled by Craig Salter ‘Promusica’ a few years ago and he installed the following: New Rega RB251, Michell Tecnoweight, Michell 3-point VTA adjuster. Mose Hercules PSU New armboard New belt, mat, springs, etc, along with service and rebuild. My meagre setup: Quasimodo Mini 20wpc (Richard McDonald) 'Mimic’ (Mark/Retro Thermionic) MM Battery Phono DCM Time Window speakers
