  1. Looking for input from people who have compared the sound quality from different dedicated music servers/streamers/renderers... ...and people willing to participate in GTGs for future comparisons. In particular, this is for people that don't want to tweak a PC or Mac; would rather buy a solution from the likes of Antipodes, Aria, Auralic, Auraliti, Aurender, Ayon...just to mention a few starting with "A". A few of us kinda hijacked a thread from a guy asking advice http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/index.php?/topic/77785-setting-up-a-digital-front-end-without-a-cd-player-some-advice-please/ ...so moving the conversation here. Cheers, JD
  2. Hi all, I'm most of the way through my transition from a mac/itunes computer audio playback system to a NAS and Naim network player setup. I now have my music stored on a NAS (sort of), streaming to a (brand-spanking new) Naim Unitiqute. My problem/question is this: How should I store the music I have on my NAS, which was previously accessed only through iTunes, so that it plays nicely with my unitiqute and the Naim streaming app on my iPhone/iPad? Most of my library is Apple Lossless and has the artwork embedded in the files or stored separately or whatever iTunes does by default. Wherever it is, it's not showing up in the naim app. And I'm really particular about having artwork for my whole library so I'd rather not have to add it all over again. File compatibility is not an issue, the Naim can read ALAC, but now that I'm leaving iTunes behind for good I want to be optimised for the new system. If anyone has gone through this transition before, I'd love to get some pointers or tips to ease the passage. Thanks in advance
  3. Hi all, I like to start a thread where we can discuss our findings with centralized media and playback to multiple devices around the house. I would like to avoid any discussion about playback from a storage device through the internal media application on a particular device. What I would like to see working is a stable media network around the house with a multitude of attached network devices, a central media server and 1 controller app for all of it. For Example in my case. Media Server(s): JRiver Media Center: XBMC; Plex Media Server Media Player(s): Oppo BDP-105; Sony BDP-S5100 Sonos Playbar Android Tablet Media Controller(s) (Android): Gizmo for JRiver Eos for JRiver XBMC Media Center Yatse XBMC Remote Plex media App Sonos App MediaHouse Bubble UPnP All the above media servers work in my network and provide the content to any player or controller and this seems to be the most easy part of the Media Automation. JRiver doesn't always show up as an available server and is not the most stable. All the above network players work in my network but all have their limitations. The ability to playback a certain file lies within the hardware of the device and is impossible to change yourself. Sonos Playbar doesn't see any media server except for XBMC. Doesn't always show up in the play to device list Sony BDP-S5100 crashes with BD rips in MKV format, it doesn't output Dolby True HD over the network, it doesn't play all common formats. Oppo BDP-105 has problems with subtitles over the network, doesn't always show up in the play to device list The hardest part and the cherry on the cake is the Media Controller Application. From the above list Bubble UPnP is the most reliable in finding all available Media Servers and Media Players. But it doesn't have a nice graphical interface. The graphical interface is highly dependent on what Web Interface the server software is providing, and is thus Server dependent. Plex and Yatse have by far the most elegant and complete user interface of them all. Plex however only work with Plex media players. Sonos has the best app with integrated third party applications like streaming radio, but only plays to other Sonos devices and only does music. Gizmo and Eos are not the most stable applications but have a lot of potential. In other words; Some are good with video material while others are good with music. Some of them have a very nice graphical user interface and or work with every device or server while others don't. Some are more stable than the others. But all in all the best I can get out of it at the moment is 75%. What do you use around the house and is working or not working for you?
  4. Hi, After using the JPlay dual PC setup I was getting interested in how and why this works. It is hard to do a comparison between a Dual PC and a Single PC setup, but let's say it did not sound worse. That came a bit as a surprise since JPlay is adding all these extra layers in the audio playback chain. For what I understand the following playback chain is in place (Feel free to correct me) Playback software - JPlay ASIO driver - JPlay service - Network - JPlay service - DAC driver - USB - DAC For what I understand you use one PC to do all the hard work, and the other just for passing on the PCM bits stream to the DAC. (Feel free to correct me) The result would be to isolate the noise from the playback PC It is not uncommon to use Ethernet for real time audio http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_over_Ethernet The questions that I am having are the following: What is the reason for using USB instead of LAN? Is there any development in building a LAN to USB converter by using for example a Wandboard or a Raspberry Pi? Are there any player that can send a PCM bit stream over Ethernet Does it make sense to do this at home?

  7. Hello I hoping that the nice people on SNA might be able to provide me with some advice. After several decades buying CDs I am seriously contemplating ripping them and going the way of HD downloads and vinyl in the future. To that end I have undertaken a bit of research on both SNA and elsewhere but remain confused over a few things. What I am after is a system which is simple to use, robust and avoids unnecessary clutter, while allowing me to enjoy high quality sound. Maybe I'm shooting for the moon? At the moment I am playing my CDs through a Leema Tucana II amp into PMC FB1is. I'm very happy with the result. I want to ensure that the proposed source does not end up becoming the weak link in the chain. This is what I have in mind doing at the moment, in order, and as finances permit: 1 Upgrade my circa 2008 iMac. The HDD has about 500 GB. I think I probably need at least 1 TB, if not 2 TB for future proofing? The other issue is that the iMac is operating Windows 7 (I did not install Windows!). Would it be advantageous / necessary to update the operating system or revert it to OS X? 2 Rip my CD collection. What software should I be using? Would I be making a mistake ripping onto iTunes using ALAC? Should I be downloading Amarra etc prior to ripping and using this, and if so how? 3 Back-up my library to an external HDD. How should this be configured so it is compatible with my iMac library? 4 Purchase either a music streamer / DAC (e.g. Naim ND5 XS or Consonance Ref 7) OR a Mac Mini and USB DAC. I am leaning towards the former option because it seems like a neater solution, particularly if I can stream from a NAS wirelessly. Your thoughts? 5 Purchase a NAS, if I don't get a Mac Mini. Am I on the right track ? I am not the most tech savvy person here, so please "KISS"! Cheers
  8. Item: Linn Majik DSM Location: Marrickville / Newtown (Sydney) Price: $3300 $2900 $2550 ..reduced again FIRM! (still includes $50 donation to Stereo.net.au) Item Condition: bought in early June, 2012 so very good indeed, also it's just a few months + some more months old and has a five year warranty.. still over 4 years warranty left.. almost 4 years left :-D Reason for selling: buying a Luxman SQ-38u bought the Luxman SQ-38u (loving my Luxman) also my missus has "surprised me" by moving bedrooms around and not letting me have a stereo or TV in the bedroom anymore so this is now sitting there looking sad and unused, has a nice Dac which I'll miss I didn't really use it as a streamer though which is a waste.cause I'm soo used to Sonos.. and I have another Luxman vintage amp I still want to use.... somewhere... unsure where I can now though.. also, how do I put this, we sell Naim in the store I work at (less hours now, mainly just most weekends), it's almost a conflict of interest issue having this Linn at home unused... main reason for trying to re-list it for sale though is that my shiny new / old Vespa needs a new engine put in... ::update, engine bought now need other parts:: actually this Vespa is fine now, the one in the shed REALLY needs attention :-P 1959 model, needs... umm everything Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, DD (can pickup or I could courier it out once paid for at extra cost of course..) Extra Info: bought it to replace Sonos ZP90/ Connect, Rega Dac, old Luxman L-480 (also for sale now.... sold) but so used to using Sonos that I wound up adding a Sonos to it instead and now am buying a Luxman SQ-38u (I like wood cabinets on Hi Fi) the idea behind buying the Linn was that it would reduce the number of boxes to one, as it became two and I started reading about the Luxman SQ-38u and couldn't resist so this should be a bargain, if it's something you could use all it's functions.. has decent Amp, phono stage, streamer, DAC all in one.. and is light and slim.. (why I bought it...now if only it had a Sonos unit jammed in there somehow I'd probably keep it) Thanks for looking, Justin and sadly no it's not the Hdmi version which got released recently, though it has plenty of digital inputs so I don't think it matters all that much.. RE: DSM Reviews? The Majik DSM is a renamed Majik DS-i. There is no difference other than the name which has only been changed on the last month or so. Here is a review of the Majik DS-i from Stereophile. http://www.stereophi...n-...-amplifier and another couple of reviews... http://www.dagogo.co...sp?hArticle=744 http://www.avguide.c...-system-hifi-75
  9. Item: WDTV Location: Richmond Price: $70 Item Condition: Excellent. Reason for selling: I've finally upgraded to an Oppo 105 to save space, cut down on remotes and honestly I just really wanted one! Payment Method: Pickup - Cash Only (not interested in shipping so please don't ask) Extra Info: I've read a few reviews on this saying how hard it is to use. To be perfectly honest it does take 20min and a computer restart or 2 to get up and running but as long as you can read the instructions and use google it's very doable. Plus once it's hooked up you have a very good media streamer with optical and HDMI outputs so you can go through a dac (like my emotiva xda-2 dac&pre that's also for sale... ) for music or straight into a receiver for movies etc. Once you have it hooked up there is very little lag while navigating menus or jumping from playing music to a completely different folder and playing 3D 1080p movies. Comes with power adapter. For a look/listen please send me a PM and we can arrange a time. Pictures: Sorry about the pic's. They're the best my phone can do....
