  2. For our July club meeting … we’re very pleased to have Henry Kristanto of Redefy Audio (http://redefyaudio.com/redefy) present. Henry last presented to the club in April 2016, when he brought in his superb Redefy Two – this time he’s presenting his impressive Redefy Audio Monitor speakers supported by other top-notch components. Before the commencement of our meeting at 2:00, we’ll be having a BBQ to celebrate our 10th year. The inaugural Sydney Audio Club meeting was held on July 1st 2007 – it’s hard to believe that 10 years have gone by so quickly! So to celebrate our success and good fortune, we’re having an anniversary/birthday party. Come by at 1:00 to enjoy good food and great company. It’s free for members, and only $5 per person for guests. During our regular meeting, there will also be a raffle and some RockWiz style track guessing - just for fun. Also in attendance will be Marc Rushton, founder and publisher of StereoNET Australia (http://www.stereo.net.au/), and Edgar Kramer who is Editor-in-Chief of the just launched SoundStage Australia (http://www.soundstageaustralia.com/index.php). (If you wish to attend our meeting as a guest please see our address at the bottom). The featured system on the day will be as follows: Redefy Monitor speakers: 2 way 8” + 1.1” dome tweeter. Here is what the Redefy Audio website says about the Monitor speaker… “Our first 2 way stand mount Monitor with our own proprietary paper cone 220mm Mid woofer providing very low distortion bass and midrange, linear frequency response and impedance, coupled with a low inductance powerful motor to provide excellent sound dynamics, midrange purity and lastly a capable bass to fill up any sized domestic and studio room. We selected one of the best dome tweeter in the industry, with powerful neodymium motor, excellent treated dome and loaded with short waveguide to provide excellent dispersion to match our Mid woofer.” Refer to http://redefyaudio.com/monitor/ and http://www.audiohifi.com.au/redefy-audio-monitor.php. Also refer to a review by Edgar Kramer of the Redefy Two at http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews2/redefy/1.html Vermouth Little Luccas Mk2 Limited speakers: 2 way with 5” and Raal Ribbon tweeter. Henry is also bringing in some new speakers by Vermouth. Until recently, Vermouth was known mostly for its high-end cables. But Hendry Ramli of Vermouth Audio has now turned his hand to speakers as well. Rick LeFaver in his review at EnjoyTheMusic said … “Sound wise this amplifier ticks all the boxes, great tonality, world class 3D sound stage, a noise floor on par with all but the very best valve based amplifiers, and macro and micro dynamics in spades. The sound quality of the Elyssa is of reference level for a push-pull tube based amplifier, a perfect entry point for someone looking to explore tube amplifiers.” Refer to Rick's review at http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/0813/arte_forma_audio_elyssa.htm Esoteric SA60 SACD Player: This is an older player now, but still an excellent component. 3. For our June club meeting … Morris Swift of OneAudio Music Systems (https://oneaudio.com.au/) will present the active µ2 speakers. (That “µ” character is pronounced “mu” and is the Greek symbol for small or micro). OneAudio released the passive version of their µ2 speakers a while ago and it has received acclaim from Len Wallis Audio and others. The active version is very new. Brad Serhan designed the cabinet and did the voicing for both the passive and active speakers. Brad also designed the DSP in the active version. Morris designed the electronics and amplification. Here is an excerpt from a OneAudio brochure which explains their design philosophy… “The relationship between designing equipment and verifying its performance through measurement, and the effect on what we subsequently hear, and how this is perceived, is a complex one. So much so that many audiophiles and even designers claim that you can’t measure what you hear, and implore us to simply trust our ears. At OneAudio, we unequivocally reject this. There is no doubt that such measurement is difficult, requiring new levels of accuracy, novel approaches, and new insights in interpreting the data. But it is absolutely essential if we are to consistently design equipment capable of delivering the high levels of performance and musical enjoyment demanded by us at OneAudio.” Morris plans to demonstrate both active and passive µ2 speaker systems, however, the emphasis will definitely be on the active version. He’ll take direction from the audience, but he is also prepared to present on DSP technology and the issues with "digital", as well as the challenges of critical listening/evaluation and "A-B" testing. Morris will do most of his presenting at the beginning of our second half session (i.e. after our half time break). He wishes that you listen to the system first without being told what you should expect to hear. Morris would like you to first listen without influence or bias. The featured system will be as follows: Speakers (Active): OneAudio µ2 Active speakers utilizing ScanSpeak Revelator drivers - a 5" woofer and a 1" ring tweeter. These drivers are from the ScanSpeak premium product range and can be found in other speakers priced up to $50,000 and beyond. Main digital Source: PC/Laptop supplied by OneAudio. CD Transport: An Oppo BDP-105D Universal player will be used as a transport (for our BYO session only). Our popular BYO session will be split – it’ll be in part of the first half session, and also the latter part of our second half session. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD or USB flash drives (sorry no vinyl). NOTE that USB flash drives are preferable. All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting. We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played. Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go. Whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, you will have the opportunity to listen, learn and share your experiences with others. 6. For our March club meeting we’ll have Leighton Holloway of Holloway Sound present his Carmen loudspeakers. Leighton is a Sydney based bespoke speaker manufacturer. He previously worked as an audio installer and for many years as an audio engineer. He’s been building speakers for many years for family and friends, and in 2014 he decided to turn it into a business. When he isn’t in his workshop nowadays you’ll find him rehearsing or gigging with his funk band (he plays bass). Leighton is enthusiastic and knowledgeable of all aspects of speaker design. He designs and builds his own cabinets and cross-overs. And he designs and builds to order, so if you have a particular configuration in mind, Leighton can likely build it. All are handmade bespoke speakers, made in Sydney by Leighton himself. Refer to http://www.hollowaysound.com.au/home-1.html The system will be comprised of some of the following gear. On the day, we’ll evaluate which combination sounds best in our room. Holloway Sound Carmen speakers. Stand-mount 2-way speakers. Very good transparency, linearity and tonality without harshness. Leighton will also show a pair of Carmen’s that are partially built so you can see the excellent build quality of the cabinets. Refer to http://www.hollowaysound.com.au/carmen-series2.html. 7. Our February club meeting sees the very welcome return of Cameron Keating of MAXMEDIA Melbourne. Without fail, Cameron always brings in interesting and superb sounding gear – and this time looks to be no different..! This month the emphasis with be on the various iFi products he sells. iFi is the UK manufacturer of high performance, reasonably priced equipment. And Cameron will also be bringing an excellent turntable so we’ll hear lots of great vinyl too (don’t forget to bring yours!). The system will be: AVANTGARDE ACOUSTIC, IFI, SCHEU ANALOGUE, LAB 12 and KingSound Electrostatic Headphones AVANTGARDE ACOUSTIC - The ZERO 1 XD is a 3-way active loudspeaker in a 2 x 50 watt and 1 x 400 watt power amplified 3-way active system, configuration, with each of the driver stages receiving a signal that is digitally filtered and then converted to analogue, amplified, and directly connected to the voice coil of the driver systems without any passive filters in between. A ‘one-size-fits-all’ power amplifier covering the entire frequency range is renounced in favor of amplifier stages optimized for each of the dedicated frequency ranges. Moreover, the strict division into 3 ranges prevents bass signals from affecting midrange and treble reproduction and vice-versa. SCHEU ANALOGUE - The CLASSIC CELLO TURNTABLE fitted with Rega 202 and Ortofon Super OM10 $2,499. It will be running with the new IFI IPHONO 2 $849. How a `connoisseur´s tip’ came to conquer the analogue world. What began 20 years ago with Thomas Scheu’s `passion for tinkering´ has grown into a highly regarded company with audiophile customers almost anywhere on this recently revinylized planet. The SCHEU Cello Classic Line Timbre was awarded `Product of The Year´ by the Cinema Awards 2015 in Russia, it is easy to see why on inspection. The Cello Classic Line is divided into three models with different features (tonearms and cartridges), different shell structures and different shell designs. Also see the Scheu website. IFI, IFI, IFI… “…UK’s largest manufacturer of high-end audio systems… one-stop shop for computer audio… the greatest depth and breadth in USB power and signal clean-up devices…” The Micro iFi iPHONO 2. Only everything has been improved. Ultra-wide gain range – max gain is an astonishing 72dB, min gain is 36dB. To suit any cartridge. Whisper quiet – SNR of > 86dB is an impressive 10dB quieter than the original. Latest AMR trickle-down; Class A, TubeState® circuit for unrivalled linearity, DriveDrive® servo-less ‘DC infinity’ circuit. No capacitors AND no DC-Servo means zero added noise and distortion in the audio signal path. $849. The NEW Micro IFI iDSD BL edition DAC. Digital engine upgraded with iFi custom ultra-low noise Op-Amp OV2028 Analogue section upgraded with iFi custom ultra-low noise Op-Amp OV2627. $925 IFI SPDIF Purifier. When asked, does it make your system sound better, they answer was in all cases, we cannot listen now without it in place. SPDIF is ubiquitous, but needs jitter sorting. SPDIF is back. With platforms like PS4, Xbox, Apple TV and Google Chromecast etc., SPDIF output has once again become a popular medium for enjoying good sound. However, such SPDIF outputs are loaded with jitter which effects sub-par sound quality. The new SPDIF iPurifier runs the SPDIF signal through 4 comprehensive signal optimisation and regeneration stages. The SPDIF iPurifier eliminates all source jitter and regenerates a perfect SPDIF signal - resulting in warmer, more dynamic, resolving and flat out more life-like sonics. Quieter than battery iPower 5V included. $225. LAB 12 - The Gordian Multifunctional Power Distributor / Conditioner. Your system deserves clean and abundant power. Whatever your audio system setup is, clean and abundant power is the nutrition that will make it reveal its strength and virtuousness. It is well known that an inadequate power distributor may kill the dynamics of your audio system and that a noisy AC power line could affect its performance on midrange and high frequency signals. Gordian is here to distribute all the power that your system may need even at extreme situations without losing its strength. It is also here to gently clean up the unwanted artefacts from your power supply using a well-designed, adaptive network of passive components. Conductors of very large cross section, high quality tight sockets and industrial grade bindings constitute the unshakable electrical network that delivers the power to your system. The “star” topology of the inner connections reduces to the minimum the noise transfer between your devices while guarantees that no ground loops will be developed. The Gordian cares about the quality of your power source more than you may realize. It incorporates an industrial grade power analyzer which lets you inspect many aspects of your AC power signal. Some of the available metrics are: · Frequency (accuracy 0.0005%) · Total Harmonic Distortion (THD - accuracy 0.005%) · RMS Voltage/Current · Power Consumption · Power Factor · FFT (Frequency analysis) · DC Voltage A serious power analyser. PRICE - AS DISCUSSED. LAB 12 - The Passive Attenuator / Input Selector TRUE Some like pure. TRUE is a pure passive attenuator/input selector. It is designed to keep every detail of this low level, sensitive signal coming from your source to your power amplifier, unaffected. Connect it to your system, allow some playing hours to let it get familiar with your devices and finally enjoy the music. Because at the end of the day this is what we are truly looking for. Includes features like a Blue Velvet ALPS Audio Grade potentiometer and a high grade input selector. RRP $799. KingSound Electrostatic Headphones – for the headphone lovers, Cameron will be bringing in the new KingSound Electrostatic Headphones. Likely the KS-2 package which includes the KS-2 headphones ($849 on their own) and the M-10 Amplifier: $1,099 INC GST for the package. Note: We will also have an Oppo BDP-105D Universal player on hand to allow the playing of CD/SACD and USB flash drives during our BYO session. We will be using the Oppo only as a transport. The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on vinyl, CD/SACD or USB flash drive. Feel free to come and hear the capabilities of the system, or to just share the experience with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. 8. For the January meeting of the Sydney Audio Club we are very pleased to have dedicated Sydney Audio Club member, Graham Allen, present the large reference version of Linkwitz kit speakers. These DIY speakers are one of many products created by Siegfried Linkwitz (refer to his website at http://www.linkwitzlab.com/index.html). Siegfried Linkwitz has over 40 years of experience in loudspeaker design, electro-acoustic system design and the perception of sound from loudspeakers in normal rooms. (As well, his name is one half of the respected Linkwitz-Riley crossover filter). In our September 2015 meeting, Graham presented a pair of Linkwitz Lab LX Mini speakers. They offer very good sound for a very modest outlay of money. This month, Graham will be demonstrating his recently completed Linkwitz Lab LX521 speakers. Refer to http://www.linkwitzlab.com/LX521/Description.htm. These unique speakers, designed by Siegfried Linkwitz, are wide range 4-way dipoles using per channel; 2 bass drivers, lower mid, upper mid and tweeter drivers. They should be quite capable of filling our club meeting room with a high quality, well imaged sound stage. Graham’s speakers are the LX521.4 4-way version with digital crossover, and are built acoustically identical to the published Linkwitz design, with some minor changes to the appearance to suit locally available materials. The timber used is Australian river red gum, with the baffles and baffle support shelf made from solid stock, and the side supports made from marine plywood covered with 2mm veneer cut from the same plank. The river red gum is finished in an oil based varnish. The bass enclosures are made with marine plywood, painted with a textured satin black. (See the photos of Graham's own speakers below this message.) Graham will give a brief technical description of the LX521 design approach, explain how they were constructed, and demonstrate the speakers on a range of music. For his presentation, Graham will use his laptop with JRiver as a source (via a USB streamer to the miniDSP 4x10 processor). Details of the system…. Linkwitz Lab LX521 speakers – These reference quality speakers offer articulate bass reproduction due to reduced coupling to room modes, neutral timbre and fast time response, low non-linear distortion and high instantaneous dynamic range, optimal spatial rendering of the stereo phantom image. Amplification – The LX521s will be driven by an 8 channel, 180W per channel, Hypex class D amplifier, using the UcD180HG amplifier modules https://www.hypexshop.com/DetailServlet?detailID=2151 and SMPS400A180 power supplies (4 separate power supplies) https://www.hypexshop.com/DetailServlet?detailID=3140. Crossover duties and digital signal processing will be handled by a MiniDSP 4x10 Hd https://www.minidsp.com/products/minidsp-in-a-box/minidsp-4x10-hd. The miniDSP 4x10 accepts digital and analogue inputs. Oppo BDP-105 Universal player – We will have an Oppo on hand for our BYO session. Refer to https://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-105/ and http://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/oppo-bdp-105-universal-blu-ray-player-and-dac/ The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD/SACD or USB flash drive. (Sorry, no vinyl this month) All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting. We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played. Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go. Whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, you will have the opportunity to listen, learn and share your experiences with others. Feel free to come and hear the capabilities of the system, or to just share the experience with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. 10. For the October meeting of the Sydney Audio Club, we are very pleased to have Steve Behrens of Audio Active present (refer to http://audioactive.com.au/). Audio Active is a leading supplier of specialist audio-visual products, with a commitment to sourcing products of only the finest quality, while delivering value for money, even on the most high-end systems. They are the exclusive Australian importer and distributor for some of the world’s most respected home theatre and hi-fi brands, including the UK brand Isotek which will be featured this month. This month, Steve will present different Isotek power mains conditioning products. Isotek is an English company that designs and manufacturers highly specialised mains conditioners that clean your power before it reaches your hi-fi or audio visual system. The one thing all electronic devices need is power. And to some extent, your power is probably polluted with Differential and Common Mode mains noise. Differential noise is created by the power supplies in all electronic devices. Common Mode noise is introduced into your devices by RFI and wireless communications (e.g. Wi-Fi). Isotek mains conditioners clean your power and allows your system to sound more pure, clean and quiet. (Clean power also allows audio-visual gear to render better images.) And of course, Isotek mains conditioners also provide protection from dangerous power surges and spikes. Isotek is recognised as the leader in clean-power technology, and have recently won yet another award - the “Most innovative Brand 2016” – refer to http://www.plusxaward.de/en/innovativste-marke-des-jahres/. Steve will introduce and demonstrate the various Isotek products, starting with the entry level Polaris through to the cutting edge Mosaic Genesis. 12. The September 2015 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again gather for an afternoon of fine music, great sound and amicable company. Each month, the Sydney Audio Club presents the finest in high end audio systems for our members and guests. It's a bit like a private audio show once a month where you can hear and discuss equipment that you might not otherwise have the chance to audition. And you can bring along your own music to test the capabilities of the system or to just share with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. This month we will be presenting the Linkwitz Lab LX Mini speakers. These DIY speakers are one of many products from the fertile mind of Siegfried Linkwitz. Siegfried Linkwitz has over 40 years of experience in loudspeaker design, electro-acoustic system design and the perception of sound from loudspeakers in normal rooms. (As well, his name is one half of the infamous Linkwitz-Riley crossover filter). In his own words taken from the Linkwitz website… “The LXmini is a most remarkable loudspeaker. It converts electrical signal voltages into acoustic pressure variations, which are perceived as completely neutral and detailed even in a reverberant environment. With this design I want to give every music lover the opportunity to build and enjoy a reference quality sound system singing in their own living space.†These are unusual and interesting speakers, and although they may appear on the small side, we expect them to be able to drive our room. The pair we’ll have on the day were built by inveterate tinkerer and dedicated Sydney Audio Club member, Graham Allen. Graham will kindly give a talk about the speakers between tracks. Details of the system…. Linkwitz LX Mini speakers – Refer to http://www.linkwitzlab.com/LXmini/Introduction.htm plus http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:748550 and http://www.magiclx521.com/news.html. These speakers utilize a 6.5 inch bass driver and a forward firing full-range driver in each speaker. The drivers are from the SEAS Prestige range. Here is an excerpt taken from the Linkwitz website… “…With directivity controlled in this way the LXmini becomes much less sensitive to room placement, while also gaining in 3D imaging precision. The small, full-range driver on top is superbly smooth and detailed. It blends flawlessly with the pistonic, infinite transmission line woofer for a completely neutral sound in a reverberant room. The speaker stands 40" (1 m) tall. It requires two stereo power amplifiers of 80 W for woofer and full-range drivers. The four input signals to the power amplifiers are generated in a miniDSP 2x4 processor from the left and right outputs of a preamplifier or other device with a volume control.†Btw – Herb Reichert at RMAF 2014 had this to say… “The Linkwitz Lab's LXmini loudspeakers […] produced the most musically enjoyable, naturally balanced, properly toned, correctly detailed, music I experienced in any room on my beat.†Refer to http://www.stereophile.com/content/rmaf-2014-reichert-sunday#7ui6svMXPrp4CCCz.97 The plans to build them can be purchased through the Linkwitz Lab web site (for $105 USD). You can order the kit through Madisound in the US for $398 USD (on sale at the moment). Refer to https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/2-way-speaker-kits/lxmini-linkwitz-lab-speaker-kit-pair/ The pair Graham will be demonstrating have been built by him, closely following the Linkwitz plans with some minor cosmetic changes to the mounting of the high frequency driver and using solid granite bases. The finish on the pipe shaped enclosures is a polyurethane water-based varnish system applied over a textured and coloured paper substrate. Subwoofer - 2 x 15inch dipole subwoofer. NAD preamp – the NAD 1700 Monitor Series. NAD Power amps – the NAD 2600 Monitor Series on the bass and the NAD C320BEE for the high frequency.
