  5. Item: Aurios Pro Max Isolation Cones Location: Perth Price: $ 960.00 Item Condition: Excellent Reason for selling: Getting out of Hifi Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: Aurios Pro Max isolation cones with stainless steel inserts for speaker spikes to fit nicely. These units perform wonderfully under any component or speaker. The 8 pieces here were under my Quad 2905. These are very hard to find as I believe the company is no longer in business. I purchased these new at over double the asking price. I can post anywhere in Australia and prefer to sell the lot in the one hit. Postage will be at cost and will provide a receipt for proof. Local pickup is ok as well and preferred, but will post. Thanks for looking. Pictures:
  6. Longish post, however I want to write about a few simple tricks that many hi-fi heads will already be well familiar with, but took me years to learn about, or learn the value of, which profoundly improved the way my music sounded through a system I thought was incapable of that level of performance. And I did it for next to nothing. I recall after buying my first set of real speakers, walking back into the hi-fi shop and asking if it was possible to get another set of fronts to run together with the ones I’d just bought. This because I just wasn’t hearing what I wanted to hear from my new purchase. “Why would you want to do that?” the store owner asked me. “Yours are fine.” I thought she was saying that just to justify the fact that she’d let me buy an inferior pair of speakers (which my Cerwin Vega VE-15s sort of are, but in some ways they aren’t at all). Instead of a new pair of speakers though, she led me to purchasing a QUAD 99 power amp that I could run from the pre outs of my Yamaha AVR. Which did go some way to sweetening the sound I was hearing from those Cerwin Vegas. Though after a few years of use, and the entry of a nice turntable into my life, I started to think that I really should just leave those massive VEs as home theatre speakers, where they perform incredibly well, and set up a second system to do hi-fi duties. It was in this mood that I met Allan MacDonald, of Vinylhead Records in Coffs Harbour. My initial question to him was around possible speaker recommendations. “What are you running now?" he asks - and I tell him. “Oh, right. Well, they are a very efficient pair of speakers, those Cerwin Vegas,” he tells me. “They should be sounding ok. How have you got them set up? Are they on spikes?” “No.” “What sort of floors are they on?” “Wood.” You really need to have them on spikes or some kind of rubber pads to isolate them properly from the floor, he tells me. “You don’t have to spend a lot,” he says, and points to a pair of speakers nearby that are sitting on rubber pads he’d picked up at a hardware store. So, first chance I get, I go to Bunnings and find these inch and a half square rubber anti-vibration pads. After a bit of internet research, I also decide to put down some stone tiles, which went under the pads/speakers. The change in sound was immediate and satisfying. There was greater detail and air, and a general increase in focus and that undefinable element i'll call juice. It didn’t end there though. While it sounded great with jazz, after playing one of my CDs of more modern music with more consistent bass frequencies, I noticed that the bass was sounding really boomy. The Cerwin’s have always been established in the bass department, but never so much that I felt annoyed. Now, there seemed to be the overwhelming, droning bass response. With them already well away from the wall, I thought it was the tiles at fault, or maybe the fact that the speakers were off the ground now. I emailed Allan, with a couple of pictures of my room. “You speakers are fine,” he says. “But I notice that you have your components sitting on wooden shelves in your entertainment unit. You should try isolating the components as well, as this will help with tighter bass.” So back to Bunnings I went. And once again, once installed, the improvement was little short of amazing. The boomyness was gone. They gave my bass a new control, sharpness and punch, and the new clarity in the bottom end seemed to open up the mid-range to a new level of detail. The isolation also gave my CD player a heightened expansion and finesse I wasn’t expecting, and though I really should be using a platform for my turntable, jamming some larger rubber squares under its feet also made a noticeable and enjoyable difference to its sound, just in composure and presentation, and warmth. In short, I learnt the value of a hi-fi rack without actually using one. I emailed Allan to thank him for his advice, and let him know of the results. “I am right into isolation,” he replied. “Most audio shops don't sell or mention it, or don't know?” His comment got me thinking. Maybe the hi-fi shop owner was legitimately confused at my desire to find new speakers. Maybe she wasn’t avoiding the fact that they were not that good. Maybe that was because she had tested them and thought that they were. And now that I’ve got all of the components in my system isolated, including the speakers, the difference in music presentation is night and day. They are lovely, particularly with jazz. So why had nobody suggested I do this before? When I started complaining about my speakers initially, why was isolation not mentioned? Ok, so the store owner used it as an opportunity to sell me a new piece of equipment, in the power amp, and maybe that is the reason. I might have been satisfied with my AVR’s sound had I just isolated everything in the first place and went from there. And though I’m happy I have that power amp, I think I’d have been happier setting things right up in the first place.

  17. I am not sure this should be here and for my first real post it may be a bit long but I hope to learn quickly how to use the forum. I am currently looking at different options for isolation, and am getting a bit overwhelmed with the number of options and the extent of things I don't know but have set on a journey that I believe you can also help shape and that I am laying down below. I saw that (industrial) anti vibration pads and a massive wooden or stone platform is a common recommendation here on SNA (for speakers and TT) , but I'm trying to focus on solutions with lower visual footprint for now (and a platform as a solution would also mean I need to keep the spikes under my speaker (bottom ported) which I fear would have a significant impact on the height of the tweeter) I settled on isolation and not coupling after 1) experiencing a nice improvement in clarity and timber of instruments after installing Herbie's audio decoupling gliders below my speaker spikes (WB Vector) 2) noticing (after that) that I could hear the bass through the sofa while my other ear was blocked. And this with the speakers playing at night at background noise level (55db slow c-weighted). My standard listening level are around 60dB with peak 70db. As I browsed online through the different type of isolation device, I could notice many different designs which I decided to try testing out a bit. In the back of my mind I'd love to be able after that to understand what it is best for me in my system to isolate (horizontal vibrations, vertical one or both) and I'll take any clue from you guys if you don't mind sharing. But until I get there, I have to rely on my testing in my system While admitedly my listening levels are nowhere near crazy and I should be able to leave with what I have, I am still keen to proceed in isolating my speakers: - if only to prevent any potential complaint from my neighbours. - to get some even better sound - to decrease the extent of the filtering I run in the Hqplayer convolution engine so as to regain 3 to 8db of dynamics in the system To give some context, I am using a simple system with - a mac mini running roon+hqplayer on audiolinux - matrix x-spdif 2 to convert USB to AES/EBU - soulution 330 integrated with Dac - WB Vector on spikes Positioning of the speaker is not a variable (except toe in) and listening position can be adjusted a bit Digital gear is all stuck in the TV console (a few vertical vibration resonance modes) (I haven't managed yet to understand how to insert images in-line from my phone so they may well be at the very end of the post.) So I set up to gather some relatively inexpensive isolation footers (images below) to compare different designs... on my amp (before I spend for the speakers). I have so far only focused on footers, big heavy platforms being a difficult topic to bring up with my better half and have started testing: - some ceraball type of aluminium footers (made in China, not the real ones) - stainless steel slim 3 ball bearing footer (with balls almost totally "locked" in dimples barely bigger their size. - ebony/crystal 3 ball bearing footer (here the dimple for the balls are a bit bigger than the balls and the central piece of the footer is a simple rod, giving more freedom to the 2 pieces of the footer as compared to the one above - chinese magnetic footers with ball bearing on top (similar to the above stainless steel one) Coming later for testing: - herbie audio lab tenderfeet - ingress engineering rollerblock - townshend audio isolation platform I have so far reached the best results with 4 magnetic footers under the feet of the amp but am wondering whether I am in an optimal situation: - how to determine whether they're loaded enough (they're rated up to 40 kg but the top is barely sinking into the main body and the amp is barely moving when pushed either sideways or vertically (amp weight is between 30 and 32 kg I'd say) - how to determine the center of gravity of the amp to try with only 3 footers (I can always adjust the height of these footers but guess it's best to have all of them loaded equally) - what's the lifespan of a magnetic footer (I wouldn't want one of the magnet to suddenly fail and prop the amp suddenly down) Now to how does it sound: The magnetivc footers bring a more natural tone, a little more laid back feeling with still good dynamics, a lot of smoothness yet no emphasis on bas or mid bass, a more open highs, more detail. Comparatively, in my system: - amp on the ebony footers would rate second with more warmth and a bigger soundstage - amp on the ground would rate next with a natural and neutral delivery, more detail popping than the ebony footers - the stainless steel ball bearings would follow then with a less smooth delivery than the ebony footers and an overemphasised bass/medium bass but a bit more detail. - Finaly my chinese ceraball delivers the most detail (except for the magnetic footers) but everything is metallic, soundstage is deconstructed, everything's extremely gritty, probably better with warmer or slower systems My next step will then to be to compare the magnetic footers with the newcomers before I try to assess whether I want to use the same type of footers for the speakers (with the added need to make sure it's safe in a baby friendly environment) As you can see, there's still a lot to try and the process is not necessarily the most coherent, so I'll welcome your thoughts on what I could/should try. Also as you can see my journey so far has been mostly subjective. I tried to measure the impact of each footer in term of vibrations using a vibration app on my phone, but it lacks precision and none of the footers seem to produce so far a profile different from the floor itself (main resonance maybe at 8 hz, background noise of about 0.03m/s2 on each axis) I have to make REW work on my headless Linux machine running HQP, but until then I "rely" on the seismic app on my phone (not really useful) . With that I can just tell that my TV console with all the digital gear resonates like crazy when fighter jets rush over my head (but then I can't hear the music, so not such a big deal) If anyone has experience with different types of footers, subjective or measured, I'll welcome your inputs and I'll keep you posted when new findings come up PS: my most listened to tracks right now are nursery rhymes as I am looking for various (and listenable) baby approved songs in Chinese, French and English, so testing will take a long time I fear for lack of proper available time. Good news is that I'll have that time to read your comments.

  22. Item: Bocchino Audio Mecado Titanium GR2 Isolation Feet/Footers/Cones Set Location: Adelaide Price: $SOLD Item Condition: Excellent (light marks from placement) Reason for selling: Selling last of my reference system Payment Method: Pickup, Cash, EFT, Paypal (buyer pays postage and any transaction fees) Extra Info: The last and best of my isolation footers, used under my $16k DAC (now sold so they have to go). Bocchino make some of the best engineered and best sounding cables and isolation accessories on the market. These titanium footers currently retail for over $1000 for a set of 3. Yes, they make a large difference on the spatial presentation of sound, provided you have high quality equipment. From the Bocchino website: Mecado’s...are essentially Mechanical Diodes that channel mechanical vibrational energy to the cone/shoe interface for dissipation as heat. The design minimises transmission of mechanical vibrational energy from the environment where the appliance is located and maximises the removal of the same from the appliance to the cone/shoe interface for dissipation and removal. The benefits are audible immediately on installation and improve dramatically as more Mecado’s are placed under more of the appliances; Nominally the most you need to use on most appliances is 3, on very heavy loudspeakers and behemouth amplifiers then 4 may be required. Music displays less smearing and appears more distinct. Transients are sharper and possess more bite while being more refined. Instruments have more solidity, and their focus or location in the stereo field is better defined with the space around them cleaned and free of vibrational artefacts. There is a cleaner air to music and especially vocals. A more natural reproduction of an instruments’ timbre becomes evident with greater accuracy in the mapping of each notes' transient and harmonic space. Resolution of low-level information is greatly enhanced as it would normally be lost in the micro-vibrational artefacts that persist in a system that is not properly de-coupled. There is better translation of the time between notes and greater clarity in tracking the subtle gradations of dynamic range. This enables a more accurate identification of individual instruments, and coherency of their acoustic venue. The listener is better able to garner a more marked understanding of the intent and artistry of the musicians, and the artistic message intended. Lyrics become more intelligible with sharpness of diction the most immediate improvement. 25. Hi all, I have tossed out my CD player and ripped all of my albums into FLAC format! As a result, I have been building a two-channel digital system from the ground up over the last 12 months and I'm now up to the power conditioning and isolation stage. The guiding philosophy has been based on the following principles: 1. The reproduction of music must be accurate and clear 2. Instruments must sound natural, neutral and 'uncoloured' 3. The components must represent value for money (to some degree) The selection of individual pre-loved components followed this acquisition sequence (I already had an Arcam CD36 player on loan): - Speakers: Sonus Faber Cremona Auditors (stand mount) - Amplification: Plinius Tautoro Pre and Plinius SA-201 Power Amp - Source: Replace Arcam CD36 Player with Ayre Acoustics DAC - Interconnects: Replace all generic interconnects with AudioQuest Sky - Speakers: Replace Sonus Fabers with Avalon Ascendants (floor standing) - Speaker cables: Replace generic cables with AudioQuest Redwood The results are great so far, but there is still tweaking to do and the room acoustics aren't great. I am currently in the process of purchasing an Ayre L-5xe power conditioner and some AudioQuest US power cables to experiment with. Really my goal here is to replace my supermarket power board with a solution that won't change or colour my system in any way. I am also looking to invest in a rack system next which will properly isolate each component including footers/feet/cones. Does anyone have any suggestions for a high quality rack system that I can keep for the long term? I am leaning towards Harmonic Resolution Systems (HRS) to tie in with the modern silver theme. I am also interested in anyone's experience with high-end footers/feet/cones. Cheers!
