  1. My PC (tower case) is a first generation Intel i5, 15GB RAM, yadda, yadda yadda. Anyway, time to update. Here's what it gets used for: * Windows 7. * Technical stuff - Audio measurements, drawing, etc. * Watching videos. * Playing music. * Surfing the web, reading emails, talking on SNA. * The only game I play (which is not often) is Doom (yeah, the original). Maybe that will change, but games are not a high priority. Here's what I need: * Three monitor capability (at least one should be 4k). It would be nice to have at least one VGA output (but I could be prepared to retire my old monitor, if necessary). * Probably going for a RAID array, or maybe unRAID: https://lime-technology.com/ * All the usual USB ports etc. * Room for internal expansion. * SSD boot drive. Some suggestions would be welcome: * Where to buy (in Sydney) * Gen 7 or gen 8 i5 processor? I understand the gen 8 requires a new MB. Problem? * Build a system, or buy off the shelf and adapt (it seems that it may be cheaper to buy off the shelf)? * Any other suggestions will be welcome.
  2. Disaster has struck. I need a new desktop PC. Any help, or indeed, good used computers (happy to pay a fair price, of course) will be appreciated. I guess I'm after opinions on hardware and resellers. Am I better specifying the parts and assembling, or have it assembled? All that kind of stuff. Here's my rough and ready list: * I don't game. Unless you count Doom (yeah, the original). * I was thinking that an Intel i5 7XXX would be about right. Higher would be fine and maybe an older generation (6XXX) would be better than my present, first generation i5 anyway. I'm open to AMD as well, but I don't know much about their processors. * Gigabyte motherboards have served me well, but I'm open to suggestions. * Hard drives don't matter much, as I would place the operating system on an SSD (or whatever those new things are called) and I'll use a WD Red for most of my storage. * Video card. I'd like good connectivity, but I guess I can whack a fancy card in later. I've been using a Gigabyte GT640 and it's been fine, but now it's stuffed (along with everything else). * Monitor. Something I can add, but if there's one included in a machine and it works, then that's OK too. Suggestions for a nice (24" ~ 28") monitor are welcome. * 16GB RAM would be nice. Again, something I can add later. * Price. Well, that's curly, because it depends on what the machine contains. I'd kinda like to hold down to a grand or so. Sorry it's all a bit vague. Oh yeah, one more thing: I managed to damage the controller card in my WD 3TB, Red drive (don't ask - I feel real stupid). I am hoping that one of the data recovery guys can swap the controller over and get the thing back in operation. Chances? Someone in Sydney (well, I guess I could post it outside Sydney) who can do the job?
