  1. Further information: I am selling this amp for my brother - it is in excellent condition with very little use. Postage is available as my brother has the original boxes but local pick up is preferred. See 3rd picture for little mark which is hardly visible. Review from TNT There has always been an inherent rightness about the idea of an integrated amplifier. The efficiencies are impressive, the compromises mostly imagined. With the modern additions of display and a properly implemented remote control the integrated becomes all the more appealing. Now there are integrated and then there are integrateds: The sometimes classic (Naim) and sometimes overrated (fill in the blank) British offerings are not what I have in mind. For some reason, the Brits just don't seem to get the fact that an integrated needs real world power to be of real world use. Rotel is a company that knows how build high powered amplifiers, so when I found out that their flagship RA-1070 was said to be happy driving a tough 4 ohm load, I was quick to request a sample. The RA-1070 is the latest in a spate of offerings wherein the product's look and performance really threaten a redefining of the high end. There was a time when such a product would have cost well over $2000. While the old guard high end companies have product lines that continually reach higher and higher, the larger mid-level companies seem willing and able to supply more music for the dollar. It may be time to ask why... This is a very attractive piece of gear. My review sample is silver and black, but the 1070 can also be had in the more traditional all black. The faceplate of the unit is cleverly designed to suggest a more hefty look through the use of substantial black aluminum handles. In fact, the silver center section of the face is quite thin (as is the top cover) yet the unit looks and feels quite solid. A large motor-driven volume pot dominates the face. When operational, there's an illuminated section that indicates its relative rotational position. In an interesting nod to the days of tone & loudness controls, there's a four position contour control which allows for accentuation and attenuation of bass and treble. I left that control in the off position for all of the evaluation period. The rear panel is well laid out with proper 5-way binding posts situated near the center of the panel making it easy to connect even the most unwieldy cables. The usual IEC 320 connector is used, but in an odd twist, this Rotel floats the ground: This is very likely of no concern in typical use, but could be an issue in systems requiring a specific grounding scheme or extensive use of truly balanced devices. The RA-1070 uses a relay as a turn-on/off stabilization device and also as a protection device in case of overheating or shorted cables. The relay can be clearly heard when powering the unit up and down. With the exception of the speaker and contour control switches, all of the RA-1070's functions can be controlled by the superb remote. This is truly a wonderful remote...it can readily learn the remote codes for all of your other gear and allows you to use the Rotel remote to control an entire system. It is also possible to customize the unit's display to indicate associated equipment by specific name rather than type. The only negative that I should mention is that while it is possible to turn the somewhat bright display off, the unit isn't designed to remember that setting. So, the very next time the Rotel is turned on the display again needs to be turned off. This is a real shame as the display off setting is very well implemented. With the display in the off position, the display momentarily illuminates whenever a control is changed. Once the change is complete the display goes out. On a teeny-tiny but slightly tacky note: The motorized volume pot indicates that the RA-1070 is in mute by flashing its position indicator. While effective, I find this solution better suited to products of a lesser pedigree than Rotel. Sound The Rotel RA-1070 is a very suave sounding piece of gear. Right out of box it has a sound that is relaxed and assured. There are absolutely no hi-fi dramatics to this amp just a competent and musical presentation. The unit looks like it sounds like it functions...sensibly, controlled and without fanfare. The essential test of tone and timber that I like to use first is the Byron Janis. The piano is clear and open with a slightly soft presentation. It is less than muted but less authoritative than it should be. Overall tonality is quite good bordering on excellent. At well over 100 watts into 8 and 4 ohm loads, it sounds even more powerful in use than the ratings would indicate. Iris DeMent's voice is possessed of its usual plaintive clarity if again just slightly softened. There was no aspect of the voice's fundamental or attack that was lacking but rather a subtle sense of shading toward the warm and dark. Now, on the period strings of the Corelli, the sound was quite open and pure with an excellent sense of space and air. The guitars of Krushevo were also recreated with an appropriate portrayal of acoustic speed and timbre. It is sometimes possible to go too far in one direction and I felt that the Rotel RA-1070 was less prone to this softening when used with my usual digital reference rather than the also excellent RCD1070. It may be that my system's overall resolution requires just a bit more raw musical information that the Rotel combination can create. More than anything, this is likely to be a matter of personal preference and perhaps most importantly the room/system interface. In any event, I appreciate the RA-1070 more when using my reference digital rig and analog. Ah, analog I will rue the day that there are no more phono stages. One of the most appealing qualities of the Rotel RA-1070 is its lovely phono stage. It is really quite excellent. The Sonny Landreth pressing quickly reveals the essence of a phono stage. First of all, it is dead silent. A noisy phono stage will overlay a hum over the blackness of the virgin vinyl. The phono stage of the 1070 is fully capable of differentiating a good pressing from one made from old combs. The Landreth LP has some wild dynamic swings from cut to cut. The Rotel really handles the range with aplomb. In contrast to the linestage's less assertive style, the phono stage of the 1070 is incisive and full of verve. As I got the Rotel RA-1070 ready for the return trip to Rotel, I had to make my system ready for some fairly large, typically high end separates. I was miserable. Not only was I going to miss the functional simplicity of the Rotel and its remote I was already missing the elegance of having all of the voltage gain and current swing in one box. Here I was on my hands and knees looking for interconnects and power cords while trying to fit the new separates into the swollen component rack. There, on the floor, the Rotel RA-1070 was staring at me as if to say, there is an easier way! There's just no arguing the fact that using an integrated amplifier makes for a more simple system. What the Rotel RA-1070 proves is that such convenience does not have to come with an unbearable loss of musicality. The 1070 is comfortable with tough loads and very easy to listen to and there is just no way to complain about its design and functionality. Maybe someday I will retire from reviewing. When I do, it will hopefully be an easier and simpler time...a time, I hope, of music. When that day comes it would be a pleasure to spend my time listening to the Rotel RA-1070, the bother and hassle of separate components just a distant memory. Until then, I trust that you'll get out and try to hear the 1070. You may find that the simple life of the Rotel RA-1070 is for you. Highly recommended. © Copyright 2003 M. L. 3. Plessis Audio S1 integrated amp in excellent condition. Bought new from Len Wallis Audio in 2017. The S1 came about as a joint effort between Charl Du Plessis and his manufacturing partner in China. The design brief was to come up with an amplifier that delivered great sound quality at a really good price. I recommend this amp as an introduction to audiophile grade hi-fi and in my own blind listening tests with various speakers in a listening room easily goes toe to toe with amps well over twice its RRP. Paired with a streaming solution like Yamaha's MusicCast boxes, it will do everything you need. Weighing in at 10kg, the result is a fantastic sounding minimalist amp that delivers 80 watts RMS into 8 ohms and 130 watts into a 4 ohm load. The only controls are a wonderfully smooth motorised volume control, input selection (from front panel only), mute. A baby remote and bonus headphone out. Lovely sounding and was enjoyed in my system. Has a slightly warm tone, excellent drive, and presents a nice amount of detail. Physically, there's a few light scratches and a slight bit of discolouration on the top of the case where the significant other placed something that stuck to the case, and she used some solvent to remove the residue. 4. Further information: Selling my MA252 which has only been used for a few months, and then, maybe only half a dozen short times. It's as new, with all packaging and accessories. Although highly regarded, it just doesn't match up with the JBL L100 in my 2nd system. So I'm going try a few other amps to see what gels. Current RRP is $7,995. I can ship this via Couriers Please at buyers cost. Photos:
  5. Further information: This is an award winning integrated amplifier from Denon with Australian power specifications. It is made in Japan. You can read the summary review: https://www.hifichoice.com/content/awards-2010-amplifiers-£1000 The Denon catalogue also featured it as an award winning amp from EISA 2010-2011. It works beautifully and even has MM/MC phone stage. It can drive my Audio Technica MC flagship OC model AT-OC9XSL cartridge (0.4mV) and sounds great via my Paradigm Studio 20 speakers. It can be used as integrated amp, power amp and pre-amp. See photos for various setup in the manual. Specifications of the amp: Refer to photo. I bought in early 2011 (RRP - Around $1700) and used it for a year and then upgraded to Luxman amp. It has been sitting in the Hi fi room all this time. There are two very minor hairline scratches on the front. They are not noticeable unless you examine in close scrutiny. Please see photos. This amplifier is rather heavy -15.5kg so I prefer local pickup. It comes with the original manual, power cable, unused remote and original box. Will include the Denon catalogue featuring this amp. I can ship interstate if buyer is keen and there will be additional shipping costs. Photos: Advertisements without photos of the actual item will not be approved.
  6. Further information: Price reduced. Great sounding British amp, 60W per channel into 8ohms. This model released in 2010. Recently serviced (this month), all tested OK. I love it, but am getting into separate components, and need to free up funds to upgrade! Photos: Advertisements without photos of the actual item will not be approved.
  7. Problem ----------- I used to be a very happy owner of a Prima Luna Prologue II amp for which I managed to find the best damn tube combination (after months of rolling & rolling) which made the amp just sing every time I turned it on. However, despite its musicality and all the goodness it offered, I had one gripe with this amp. The lack of a remote. (I believe that this is simply human nature where we are never forever happy and at rest with certain things no matter how hard we try) This made me go for a Prima Luna Dialogue Premium Integrated. Now this amp is a beast.. weighing just above 50kg and looking as stunning as a valve amp can be. And guess what, It has a remote. One hell of a remote... I'm sure you can already guess where I'm going with this. Despite all the new features and looks and what not, the Tube arrangement is vastly different with the new amp and even after quite a lot of rolling attempts and various changes, I still have not had a combination of tubes which could even come close to that of my previous amp. Prima Luna Prologue II employs 2 x 12AX7 + 2 x 12AU7 in the pre section and 4 x EL34/KT88/KT120/etc. in the driver section. Prima Luna Dialogue Premium Integrated employs 6 X 12AU7 in the pre section and 4 x EL34/KT88/KT120/etc. in the driver section. I'm at a dilemma whether I should keep the new one and sell the old or keep the old one and sell the new Questions ------------- Can anybody give suggestions to how the Pre section of the Dialogue Premium is arranged ? (i.e. the internal structure of tubes and how they affect the sound of the amp) Has anybody found a good combination of tubes for the Dialogue Premium amplifier which can make it sound as it should ? Can 12AU7 be interchanged with 12AX7 ? And BTW, the winning tube combo in my Prologue II is as below. Those who have this amp, Please give it a try and see what I mean... 2 x 12AX-7 = Telefunken Smooth Plate (Selected Tube) 2 x 12AU-7 = Brimar CV 4034 (Purchased from Tubemonger who has the tooling to create matching bases that would go into the 12AU7 socket) 4 x EL-34 = Svetlana Winged C (NOS). (I tried a quad of Mullard EL-34 XF2 NOS with the above pre tubes but the Svetlanas sound waayyyy better with them) All Opinions are welcome Cheers....
  8. Buyer to pay postage. Further information: I bought this puppy over ebay a while back and have really enjoyed it on my Lenehan S2Rs. It is right up there with the Luxman 507u, the Accuphase E460 and the Sansui 907NRA (though if pushed I would admit to preferring the Sansui, but anyone who knows me would be expecting that). It has a very clear presentation in the top end and the mids and a nice punchy bass presentation. However when we tried it on Terry's Vienna Acoustics speakers it didn't give good bass. I'm working on the theory that it doesn't have the current drive that it needs on speakers that drop down that low in the bass region, so I would recommend this amp for anyone who has speakers that don't drop below maybe 5 Ohms in the bass region. Or for those who use a sub for music. I'm betting on a pair of Osborns it would be awesome (designed for low-ish wattage tube amps so they are both easy to drive and give easy bass). Comes with manual and remote but non-original box. More info and specs here: https://www.leema-acoustics.com/product.html?prid=56 Photos:
  9. Buyer to pay postage. Further information: It looks like I'm having an autumn clean out. I always intended to get serious with the little Heed but I never found the time and I don't think I will so I'm putting it up for sale. A nice sounding amp but I did note that it was a much better match with my ML2s than my S2s so I'm thinking it will probably match better with more revealing speakers. The built in DAC is OK (good but not great) so I think I'd use a separate one if I decided to stick with the Obelisk. I have the original box so postage will not be a problem. Photos:
  10. Further information: It was refurbished. All capacitors were checked. Critical electrolyte capacitances were replaced with WIMA one. The power lamp is replaced with a LED. The BIAS adjustment is done. Speaker terminals are upgraded. https://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/sansui/au-101.shtml Photos: Advertisements without photos of the actual item will not be approved.
  11. Further information: Very good condition. Original box, manuals etc. I bought it from Denis White HIFI and Home Cinema on 14-Feb-2019. I will provide a hard copy of the invoice. Still under warranty - ten (10) years in total, so nine years left, however I called the guys at Denis White HiFi and they said those warranties are not transferable, which is in line with what I know about warranties for audio products in Australia. Note: This unit comes with the MIND 1 module. The current model available from Australian distributors like Addicted to Audio (link below) comes with the new MIND 2 module. https://addictedtoaudio.com.au/products/simaudio-moon-ace-all-in-one-music-player More Information About MIND 2 In addition to all original MiND 1 features, MiND 2 is Roon Ready, offers multi-room synchronized playback, streams MQA* audio files and is compatible with TIDAL Masters (MQA*), Qobuz Sublime+ & Deezer Hi-Fi. Via Ethernet connection, MiND 2 can stream up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD256. *Requires MQA DAC for full MQA decoding. MIND 1 module can be updated to MIND 2 by an authorised dealer in Australia at some cost. Inputs/Outputs in the rear photo I can ship this across Australia. Inspection and sound will not disappoint. Extract from the internet MELODY H34s ASTRO BLACK Favorite tube of many music lovers is the EL34 which excels at tone. The tonality of the EL34 makes it also popular with musicians using stringed instruments, especially guitars. The most popular amplifier in the Melody range and winner of many awards the Melody H34 Signature offers fantastic sound quality at a price that seems unbelievable. With a full size chassis in piano black finish and retro styling it is a statement product in quality and style. The 25mm thick front panel contains three large solid aluminum knobs which control power on/off, volume and four RCA inputs. The volume knob controls a stepped resistor array with 24 positions. This ensures precise channel matching and maximum sound fidelity. The power tubes are four EL34 which deliver 40 watts of effortless power. This allows it to drive a wide range of loudspeakers with ease. The input and driver tubes are 6SN7/6SL7 and the amplifier has full tube rectification provided by the 5AR4 tubes. All the internal wiring is done by hand point to point with no circuit boards at all. This is the traditional way to build a long lasting amplifier with maximum sound qualities. It permits easy servicing and parts replacement or upgrading which modern solid state circuits with surface mount devices to not allow. At the rear are three oversized and shielded transformers with a power transformer in the centre and an output transformer either side for the left and right channels. Melody’s know how has delivered an amplifier that is powerful, delicate and with a depth of tone that makes it very beguiling. This amplifier can be muscular at one minute yet delicate the next, extracting minute details from the music. The sound stage is wide and deep and the bass is extremely realistic. The bass however is not dry or truncated, like many transistor amplifiers. It delivers information in the bass registers with plenty of feeling. The H34 Signature is an amplifier that music lovers will enjoy, not only for its sound but for the unbeatable value it offers.
