Further information: This is a brand new pair of Grado SR80x headphones which I've modded to make them accept detachable cables - in this case, dual-entry 3.5mm mono (TRS jacks will work as well) cables, so they're capable of being run balanced as well. I've been experimenting with a few Grado mod designs for a while now, and I've landed on this version which I'll be using down the track - it's a pretty smooth-looking job if I do say so myself. I'll be providing a mod service for Grado owner in the near future, but in this instance I've only put a nominal increase over the stock price to factor in my time. Think of it as a 'proof of concept'. I'll include the original cable, which I've added 3.5mm jacks to the ends so you can use it right out of the box, but you'll probably want to use something else. Further information: I purchased these headphones from another SNA member a few years ago. They were my primary driver for a year or so, but then I made other acquisitions so they went into the closet. To my eye, they look well cared for and lightly-used. There are a few small nicks on the earcups (see the attached photos), but by my standards they are not noticeable. The earpads and headband are in very good condition, and (most importantly) they sound fantastic. I have copied a few reviews of the headphone below (two from 2010, another from 2019). When they appeared they were Audio Technica's flagship, though they have since been superseded. My own opinion is that they are utterly gorgeous, unusually comfortable, and provide excellent sound quality for the price. In order to write this post, I pulled them out again for the first time in a while, and I've been blown away by how good they sound. The ATH-5000s are best known for the quality of the midrange, which is smooth and detailed. However, I find them really satisfying in every respect. The soundstage isn't as wide as some open-backed headphones, but it's pretty wide for a closed-back design, and the intimacy is actually pretty charming. Some people complain about the lack of bass, but for me there's plenty - and the balance across the frequency spectrum presents an exceptional impression of detail that is not at all fatiguing. For the last few days I've been comparing the ATH-5000s to the Focal Clear, which has been my main driver for the last few years. I love the Clear, but I was shocked to find that the ATH-5000s provide a greater level of detail and, depending on the genre (and my mood), a more pleasing presentation. I'm curious to try one the current TOTL planars, which means that I'll need to sell both sets of headphones. Otherwise I would be keen to hang onto them! Further information: I'm not going to bore you with description of what these sound like, there is so much press out there that does it better than me. Needless to say, they are top class headphones. During two years of lockdowns I've been doing a LOT of headfi listening, mostly on my Senny 800s - I love them and their amazing soundstage but wanted to start exploring other options which deliver a bit more oomph. I purchased these from another SNA member in September 21, who picked them up new from Addicted To Audio in June of 2021. I have actually done less listening on them than I thought, as along with summer came my desire to fire up my PMCs and play music LOUD (Lockdown fever maybe??) In terms of their condition - they present very well, with no marks or blemishes. Same for the packaging. And I gotta say, they are glorious in the the flesh. So beautifully made, they are a work of art to behold and sit easily on the noggin for extended listening sessions. I have big ears (As my daughter constantly reminds me) and have no problem feeling snug and comfy in them. However... As mentioned I am riding the upgrade express and its currently rocketing towards Streamer Town and Subwooferville. So these are being sold to fund the journey.
