  1. I currently have a basic to mid level 2 channel PC setup and I am thinking of adding a budget second hand subwoofer to increase range into the lower frequencies and enhance what I'm getting from my existing speakers. I live in an apartment with a small to medium size living room so I won't need much from a sub before I start getting complaints from my neighbours. I’m thinking that a 10 inch or lower sub will meet my requirements. Furthermore, it needs to fit within a cabinet with only 38cm in height which rules out anything larger. I don't watch a lot of movies so I'm looking for something that is better suited to playing music. My musical tastes are fairly diverse ranging from pop to classical and I occasionally listen to more bass heavy urban genres. I typically play high res music files using JRiver's Media Centre application which sends USB output to an external Topping E30 DAC into a pair of Monitor BX5s via a JAMO AVR-693. I don’t need wireless connectivity or many other functions but I’d prefer to have an auto on/off power function that doesn't have a secondary power outlet. I'll be placing the sub alongside my PC and AVR so I might need something with magnetic shielding but to be honest I'm not sure how important or relevant that type of feature is. I’d also prefer something that keeps things simple in terms of connectivity. I’m currently considering the Jamo SW250. This would only extend my frequency range from 36 Hz down to 30 Hz but I’m not sure how much lower I really need to go. Furthermore, it probably has a lot more power and drive than I need but that may not be such a bad thing and its still within my budget of up to $US200. If anyone one has some feedback on the Jamo SW250 or suggestions of other budget subs which might better suit my requirements I’d be very interested in hearing them. Cheers
  2. Hey Guys, So, I was just wondering what are the best projectors under $2000, I know there are a lot of reviews out there but I just wanted an honest opinion from someone who has actually bought a projector. Hope you guys could help me out.
  3. You're in witness protection - best not to go into details. Suffice it to say, your old gear is gone. The feds are willing to arrange one online transaction on your behalf to get you some new hi-fi components for your new life, but it has to be the one purchase, it has to be now, and it can't be something so crazy it might draw attention to you. Go to the website of your hi-fi store of choice Navigate to the integrated amplifier section and order the listings by price, low to high Select the first item with which you could live Repeat steps 2 and 3 for bookshelf speakers, and whatever other components you feel are crucial Post the system Mine was: Marantz PM6006 Stereo Integrated Amp - RRP $1090 Dali Zensor 3 Speakers - SALE $595 Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC 2M Red Turntable - SALE $498 I'm curious to see other people's responses. Partly because it's fun to get a sense of what people can 'live with' in the highly relative realm of hi-fi, and partly because the limitation of one store means it won't necessarily be the cheap system we'd prefer to build. Anyway, if this amuses you, have at.
  4. I just bought myself a new receiver, a Marantz SR7500, for my vinyl setup. It doesn't have a phono stage like my Dad's old NAD I've been using until now, so I'm after an external one. My turntable is a Technics SL-BD20 though that will likely be upgraded in the coming months. FWIW I'm just listening with headphones for now, Sennheiser HD58X, speakers will come later down the line. Preferably I'd like something under 200 downundeh dollars, and preferably not an import. Ones I've found include; Schiit Mani $269 free shipping Pro-ject Phono Box $180 + shipping Rega Phono Mini A2D $149 free shipping Pro-Ject Phono Box SE ii $200 used + shipping The Schiit is a bit pricier than I'd really like but I've heard a lot of good things about it and it has by far the most information / impressions out there. Which do you think would be the best choice, is there something else I should consider? Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
  5. Hi I've got a pair of 2nd hand Linn Espek floor-standers but alas the previous owner had lost the composite stone/resin plinth bases. Consensus seems to be that using the heavy bases takes the Espeks' performance from being decent to brilliant. Plus we have sprung wooden floors! So I definitely want to install some kind of heavy base underneath the speakers. Are any SNA members able to point me in the right direction of somewhere in Sydney I can source some granite to make plinths? Doesn't have to be anything flash looking & I don't have a big budget - certainly not hundreds of dollars. Approx dimensions 200mm x 350mm & about 40-50mm thick (or 2 x 20mm slabs glued together). Alternatively I've heard that pavers do a passable job - any comments on this or other low-budget solutions? Cheers Kundalini
  6. So today I started to delve into computer audio streaming on a tiny budget I wanted to utilise my iPad 3 and the Apple TV with my DAC But how can it be done to access files stored on another storage devise Let's face it - Audiophiles have more music and in different formats that an iPad can handle So the questions were asked and as the information was absorbed the answer was simple If one has a more modern style of router -- That has at least one USB input -- Download an app ( free lite versions are available ) like 1) Remote File Manager or (2) File Explorer Have your router setup info ready - as in -- admin name & password Plug in either a USB stick or External Drive into the router USB input and your away You then have access to the entire information on that storage media - Audio, Text, PDF ect Choose the file to open contents You open an audio file and its list will be displayed Click track and it will play on the iPad via its own audio player ( see photo ) If you want to play its contents on your Hi Fi system you need to activate " Air Play" The Apple TV that is connected to a DAC will then take over and play the audio files So far I have had fantastic results But will test it further tomorrow Here is a screen shot of the onboard app audio player of Remote File
  7. Hi guys, New to the forums and have recently purchased a pair of Usher S520s off a fellow member. I’m now in the process of ‘completing’ the system with an amplifier and some cables. My interest for this thread is cables. I’ve been doing some reading, trying to find out what I need and how much I should spend (and where I should buy). To put it lightly, finding answers has not been all too obvious or straightforward. Aspects to consider seem to include: Gauge Interconnects Material: Copper/silver (other?) Purity (of material): 99.9999%, polished, oxygen free etc. Braids? Insulation (FEP, PVC …) DIY? Seems mighty complicated… I'm hoping someone can simplify this for me and recommend some decent, budget cable. My needs: I believe all I need is 2x2m of speaker cable and some interconnects (banana plugs, preferably) which do not significantly detract from my sound quality. I don’t want to spend any more than $100. If I could get the cable pre-cut to length with the plugs connected, that would be sweet. Otherwise I’ll do it myself. Current thinking: From my reading, I should only need 18, or maximum 16AWG. Banana plugs would be ideal. Copper is fine. Extreme purity would be nice, but not essential. Braids and insulation are probably not too relevant for non-DIY cable. DIY cabling looks promosing but I'm still not certain about it, and don't really like the idea of buying CAT5/6 cables and pulling them apart to make more cables - as opposed to buying purpose-built cables already completely formed and ready to plug in - seems somewhat inefficient and wasteful. If I have some CAT5 cable laying around at home, I might give this a shot though. So far, decent sellers appear to be: Bluejeanscable Selby Acoustics Custom HT? Space Hi Fi? Based on what I've mentioned above, could anyone recommend me some specific cable, or at least point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance...
  8. Hi All, Looking for a budget tonearm. Don't have much to play with - $100 or less. It's for a DIY project to pair with a Denon DP-3000 motor unit that I'm building a plinth for. Can't be done? Challenge accepted!
  9. Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice for a good budget stereo amp and floorstanding speakers combination? I'm definitely want used equipment but that means I wont necessarily be able to try them in combination before I buy. Budget is ~2500 Room: 3.5m x 7m, wooden floors. Music: Classic rock, Metal, Reggae, Electronic. Source: Spotify (probably using Chromecast audio, unless someone recommends an amp with Spotify Connect?) Any advice or experience people have would be greatly appreciated! Cheers
