I have a Rega Brio and a Thorens TD320 with an AT VM95ML cartridge. Very nice sound, but sometimes I wonder if a dedicated phono preamp could improve the soundstage and definition. There is a Graham Slee Gram Amp 2 on offer (second hand), what would the difference be? And a second question: if I go back to Cyrus amplification (had one years ago for a long time and loved the sound), what type of phono preamp would fit right in?

I have a Rega P8 that has been running an Apheta 2 for the last 3 years. Freak accident saw a piece of clothing catch the needle l, bending the cantilever and this basically rendering the cartridge dead. I am in the market for a new cartridge and looking for any left field ideas? My default will be an Apheta 3 as I was sublimely happy with the original set up. Some details for those who need them: RB880 tonearm Rega Aria pre VTL IT-85 pre and power Spendor A6s speakers mostly Jazz, mostly piano, quartets and some big band stuff. If not another Apheta, what would people suggest at a similar price point? TIA!

This P3 sings beautifully, it has a very low noise floor, it produces gobs of air and its 3D soundstage is truly amazing. The Series 6 tonearm has a very neutral and true to the source / cartridge presentation, induced resonance at an absolute minimum! The Series 6 arm tube is a composite of multi-layer carbon fibre, aluminium and acetal damping rings, At the headshell end the tube is 0.5mm thick with a diagonal crossweave, This thin section reduces transmission of vibration to a minimum. The rest of the tube thickness is increased to 1.5mm with acetal damping discs bonded in. The c/f tube is clamped into the aluminium arm body over a length of 60mm to make a very rigid joint which damps tube vibrations I'm happy to assist the new owner setup their own cartridge. These photo's simply do not do this turntable justice, at all.

Hi All I am guessing that there would be quite a few Rega tonearm owners in SNA, who are wondering what a Cardas rewire and RCA cable upgrade may yield, sonically. Recently, I was swapping cartridges on my RB202 tonearm (entry level model - replaced by RB220 today) and part of the green wire, snapped off. I have had this arm for over two years and swapped over a few cartridges. Apparently this is a common weakness of factory Rega cables, so this gave me an excuse to 'upgrade' the internal wiring . A quick look at Sonic Art's website and a short call to Mark, had me delivering my arm to him in Victoria. My Rega already had an Isokinetic stainless steel end stub upgrade (upgrade from plastic stub) and a Rega Tungsten counterweight. I went for the Cardas internal 33 Awg litz wire, and an external 1.1m Vinyl Link shielded cable from Sonic Art. Turnaround from Mark was very quick, and I received the tonearm, with new cables professionally fitted and terminated, looking much like Rega's much more expensive model RB Xxx arms. The original wires and RCA of the base model were just cheap red and white plastic coaxials with no shielding. I particularly noticed the convenience of the Cardas 'spring loaded' cartridge clips when installing my cartridge, This is my early impression after a couple days of listening. The noise floor had dropped significantly, all the noise and hash had disappeared and I could hear additional musical and spatial detail. Bizarrely it sounded as if distortion had also been removed (guess this distortion was the 'hash'). Vocals, piano notes sounded cleaner and fuller, more airy and I could peer deeper and wider into the music. Placement of vocals and instruments in the soundstage had improved. Guitar plucks had tone, body, sustain and decay. I noticed I was getting engrossed into the performance with my feet tapping and I was going through a few tunes on various records. - a good sign. The old setup (I used the same cartridge as before), had a very forward midrange and sometimes almost at times, a slightly glaring treble. With the better quality Cardas cable and proper shielding (note the RCA cable out from tonearm pillar to the phono preamp is new too), the music took on a higher level of realism and body. You read overseas articles about the various Rega tonearm rewiring upgrades and I am a skeptical person, especially with cables - this one has taken my humble Rega tonearm to new heights and perspective. Yes it will still need some more hours (50hr I am told), to fully realise its potential for both internal and external cable. I have no regrets going down this upgrade path - great value in my opinion. My impression of Roy Gandy's Rega tonearms have also been raised significantly. Mark (Sonic Art) is very thorough and professional in explaining what is involved (via email) with the upgrade and has been excellent to deal with - this is the first time I have dealt with him and would recommend this modification to other Rega tonearm users.
