  1. so, had my first listen today. They arrived while I was away on hols. First impression is, wow they sound sooo good at low and medium volumes! My B&Ws just sounded like any crappy speakers at lower volumes, you really had to crank the volume up to get anything resembling true clarity. Second impression, wow the bass!!!! Couldn't believe that something 1/3 smaller than my B&Ws could produce so much bass! It's not bigger bass, just smoother more refined bass. This really showed on a few choice tracks, like Temptations' Papa Was A Rolling Stone, that bass line is just so rh
  2. This is the part of HiFi I completely ignore. For two reasons: 1/ I don't understand it, it's far too scientific for me to even begin to try and understand it. 2/ The world of HiFi is highly subjective. One man's treasure is another man's trash. None of us have invested what we have in our equipment so that we can get the best scientific readings possible, we do so because we want the best possible reproduction for OUR ears to OUR tastes. Our ears cannot even hear so many frequencies that are measured by these instruments. It is scientifically proven that the younger yo
  3. Thanks all for the help, gone and purchased a pair of ex-demo Dynaudio Special 40. Read a lot of the reviews and they were all really glowing. Can't wait for them to arrive!!!
  4. OK, so I've narrowed my shortlist down to the following. I know I originally said no floorstanders but there are a few hot deals out there at the moment, plus I rent so my auditioning room could change. Floorstanders: PMC Twenty5 23 @ $4,800 Proac Response DT8 @ $4,995 Standmounts: PMC Twenty5 21 @ $2,200 Dynaudio Special 40 @ $3,500 Any thoughts on the above with my system?

  7. @Winno Yeah, probably don't want to spend more than $5k and happy to go second hand too. I'm probably just a bit conscious that floorstanders tend to be more room-demanding than bookshelves. I've owned some hefty floostanders in the past and they would easily be too much for many listening rooms. I know you can get more flexible type floostanders, so I am open to that. I'm in Redcliffe
  8. Hi All, I've been slowly building my system, mostly through second hand acquisitions over the last 15 years. I've built up from something quite entry level to have the following system: Cyrus CD6 Cyrus X-Stream Sig Cyrus Pre2 DAC 2 x Cyrus SmartPower B&W 604S3 Now the B&W speakers are basically the last components of my entry level system bought 18 years ago and I want to replace them. I'm living in a rental at the moment, so I'm thinking a pair of bookshelves is probably more suitable to my circumstances at the moment. I listen t
  9. I've been using the SmartPowers for prob 10 years plus now. I've had them biamped and as monoblocs. Personally prefer them as monoblocs. Been very happy with their performance
