  1. Hi All

Have already received some feedback suggesting the setup I'm considering wont be entirely crap, but in summary....

    • I'm wanting to add an additional sub into my theatre room however am stretch for suitable locations
    • I'm considering replacing one of the boxy arm rests on our modular couch with a custom box for a sub
    • The driver will however end up facing a wall with around 4 inch of clearance.

Open to any further comments on that...

    My new question though....

I'm likely to go with a ported option, is there any issue with having the port to the front of the box whilst the driver is on the side? What would be the optimal location of the driver? Above the port or further away?

  2. Hi All

I'm wanting to add an additional sub into my theatre room however the first was a stretch with the missus in terms of placement.... Unfortunately the couch, tv unit etc was bought before I decided to start playing with the audio and I've really got no where ideal to put it.

What I've been considering today though is our couch is modular with the boxy arm rests able to be removed entirely. On the opposite side of where i've got my current sub the arm rest is approximately 10cm from the wall and what I am considering is replacing it entirely with a built sealed unit.

I've measured it up and I can build it with internal dimensions nearly smack on 4cft which matches the 12 Ultimax I'd likely end up with (already have one)

    My question though....

Whilst not ideal in this situation the driver would be firing directly into a wall, there would be a space of approx 10cm (approx 4inch) between the front of the driver and the wall.

Would this make things worse or just mean I'm not getting the most out of the driver?

My poor mans sketchup of what the box / driver might end up looking like, the box would have enough room for the driver to sit in, it could probably go on the front if i widened it but would then be facing away from the people sitting there and straight out of the door.

  3. Hi all

Complete noobie here and hoping I can get some assistance with setting up an NX1000D amp I have for my DIY 12 inch Dayton Ultramax.

First up does anyone have their Setup I can dl to look at via the software.

I'm just confused as I'm no audio guy at all and wanting to be sure I minimise the risk of blowing the driver as well as get a decent result. I'm not understanding how I set the crossover correctly, it has 2 values you input, I thought you just set one...

Anyway any assistance on a clean Setup before I plug it in to tune from there appreciated

FYI I intend to wire it up in bridge mode

  5. My first attempt at DIY, sealed 12 inch Dayton Ultramax, 0retty basic but learnt a lot in terms of wood work atleast...

Finally got the router I had dirty.

Built entirely to their advertised specs, braced sealed box, 2cft, 1lb poly fill.

  6. Hi All

I'm gonna start a sealed DIY sub this weekend and completely new to it... You guys talk way to much electricity for me, us civil engineers don't know crap about that.

Anyways I'm looking at either an NX1000 or NX3000D amp but I'm not getting how I will set it up with a sub in terms of output.

So my understanding is the amp wil do 2 x 900w at 4ohm, so would I just hook a single sub up to one output? And then if the sub is 400w RMS (example) how do I go about limiting the amp output to match the sub? Is that through the gain?

If I settle on a 400w rms sub would it be better to go the nx1000 which is 300x per channel at 4ohm?

    Absolutely confused sorry...

  7. So I'm still reading and as I said very new to the DIY approach, with the NX3000 amp how would I set it up to run a single sub at say 500w?

My understanding is it can do 900 across two channels at 4ohm, would I just use the gain to limit the output to 500w in that instance?

I'm reading up but im a civil engineer, electrical was never my strong point...

  8. Hi all

I'm new to the audio world and with our current "package" sub failing and me in need of a project I wanted to have a go at building one.

I was considering the Dayton 12 inch Ulrimax driver and am hoping to find some basic sealed and ported designs I might be able to just copy. I'm no expert and the thought of "tuning" a box is a bit daunting.

Similarly what amp would people reccomend? I was looking at something like the NX3000.

  9. Hi all

Joined to do some research into building my own sub. I'm only starting to replace bits on my Yamaha 5.1 set up and the sub has died so thought I'd start there with a DIY job.

I was looking at buying a 12 inch Dayton Reference HO driver from Wagner online.

    Couple of questions...

    - for AU buyers are there any other options to get this driver or similar

    - I was looking to go with a ported option and was hoping someone has reasonable plans I could refer to, I'm no expert so the tuning process of box design is a bit beyond me atm

    - does anyone in Perth know of any local suppliers?

I'll likely go with a plate amp option, any suggestions appreciated also.

    Thanks

    Craig
