  1. Thanks everyone, this has given me some good starting points for my search. @blakey72, it wasn't clear from your post which headphones you were referring to?
  2. Hi everyone What would you recommend for a decent set of entry-level headphones? They'll need to be used in an office environment, so open-back is probably out. I'm thinking $200 but can flex a bit if needed. I'm a beginner in this space!
  3. Further information: These Usher S-520 bookshelf speakers are in excellent condition, with no visible marks on the piano-black surface. They sound fantastic, especially with a reasonably powered 2-channel amp. I'm only selling because I've upgraded to floorstanding speakers for my large living room. Pickup from Notting Hill VIC only, no shipping sorry. Happy to audition these. 4. A little, but I’ve adjusted the audio delay on my TV to almost completely remove any sync issues. I’m not a ‘movie guy’; my priority was music, so it’s a trade-off I’ve been very happy to make.
  5. Depends on your budget I reckon - the Marantz looks to be about $1k more expensive than the Yamaha. It's probably a better bit of gear, but I'm really happy with the Yamaha.
  6. Thanks for your advice. After auditioning the Yamaha R-N803d and the Bluesound Powernode, I went for the Yamaha with a pair of Monitor Audio Bronze 5s, supported by my existing Klipsch sub. I was staggered at the improvement I got just from plugging my Ushers into the Yamaha amp, and the floorstanders just topped it off. I’m really happy with my setup, so thanks again. My wife is less happy with me pumping my tunes, but hey, isn’t that what it’s all about?
  7. Further information: This Kenwood KD-550 direct drive turntable was owned by my meticulous (some might say pedantic) father-in-law since new. It's being sold as he's moved into a retirement village and didn't have room for his old hifi equipment, nor to store his vinyl collection. It plays perfectly (tested prior to moving) but I don't have an amplifier with a phono input so can't audition for you. It comes with an Ortofon NF15 MKII cartridge, which I suspect is quite old and would be worth replacing. The model plate on the front is off-kilter (see photos) but could be re-glued
  8. Yeah, I found it strange that movies/TV sound incredible, but music is just OK and a bit thin. I had pegged my speakers as the issue, but a couple of people have suggested an 2-channel amp setup would make a significant difference. I think I need to get into a hifi store and do some listening.
  9. Thanks both for your input, it's given me some more things to think about and research. I'm definitely open to buying used if it means good quality gear!
  10. So I'm new here, and looking for some advice! My current setup has outlived its usefulness (I think!) . It was for a small living room (4m x 3m) and did the job nicely: Receiver: Denon AVR-591 Speakers: Usher S520 bookshelf Sub: Klipsch Sub 10 Streaming input: Logitech Bluetooth Audio Receiver Since moving house, I've now got an open-plan living/kitchen area, which measures about 9m x 7m, with a further 4x5m dining space coming off it without any doors. The Denon's Audyssey room EQ did a great job of making it sound good, but frankly the Ushers don't pro
  11. Thanks Bill! My current setup is getting long in the tooth. It was for a small living room (4.5m x 3m) and did the job nicely: Receiver: Denon AVR-591 Speakers: Usher S520 bookshelf Sub: Klipsch Sub 10 Since moving house, I've now got an open-plan living/kitchen area, which measures about 9m x 7m, with a further 4x5m dining space coming off it without any doors. The Denon's Audyssey room EQ did a great job of making it sound good, but frankly the Ushers don't provide a big enough sound. My setup is for TV and music 50-50 in 2.1, but I'm not sure whether I nee
  12. Hi all, I've stumbled across these forums for a couple of reasons. I need to upgrade my 2.1 hifi setup after moving into a much larger home, but I know it's easy to spend a lot of $$ and not get the results I'm after! I'll wander the forums and get some ideas. Happy to try some second-hand gear first and it looks like this is a good place to learn. Also, my father in law has just moved into a retirement village and has offloaded an old Kenwood turntable that he wants me to sell. I've got no use for it, so once I've done my time/posts I'll see if there's any interest in the classifi
